Haha alright Fussball I’ll concede to all your points about the 3-0 game last seaon. But I’ll tell you this, if MVC try the high press against Brisbane this weekend, that backline is going to get torn to shreds.

Pressing is not the silver bullet pundits treat it as. You forget Brisbane employ a press of their own, and so far have proved superior at it to every club to face them. The high press requires superior fitness, cohesion, motivation and intelligence, and by my reckoning, the Roar edge the Navy Blues in every category.

And to say counter-attacking doesn’t work – say that to Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey or Inter Milan’s European Cup.

Thanks Tristan, that’s very kind of you.

That’s an interesting point of view Tom. Traditionally, what people like Craig Foster and Les Murray have touted as one of the advantages of football over the other codes is the international aspect. Whereas AFL is Victoria and South Australia, and Rugby is mostly the Commonwealth nations, football is truly international.

My comparison wasn’t meant to be a direct correlation, more a way of illustrating the differences between the old and the new approaches at both Chelsea and MVC.

Plus I think it’s fun to try to compare A-League clubs to Euro/Latin giants. Brisbane is Barcelona, Heart is Arsenal etc.

Cheers for the comment Tom.

*could be the deep lying playmaker

A tale of Victory: From London to Melbourne

I can’t argue with your goal analysis Fussball, cause I haven’t seem them since the actual game. While the individual goals scored might not have been counter-attacking in nature, I would fairly conifdently say that counter attacking was the Victory’s general game plan during the match in question, to spring the Roar on the counter.

The stereotypical counter attack is a sweeping move out from defence when the opposition has turned over the ball in their attacking half. But counter-attacks can be inititated from midfield, and can have more opposition players behind the ball than in front.

Cheers for the comment Fussball

On an unrelated note, I just want to thank Tristan and the Roar for publishing this. You wanted shorter, and I end up delivering even longer. I’m truly sorry

I did catch parts and I’m inclined to say it wasn’t particularly deeper. In possession, he just advanced and played his usual trequartista role, and it became a 4-1-4-1, with Broxham the only player in central midfield. Some people, and I think you were among them Tom, suggested Hernandez could as the deep lying. And as I said before, I agree he’s got the passing skills, just not the temperament or the work rate or the attitude.

Thanks Hamish, I do so love it when the pressure is on 🙁

Well that was redundant.

Thanks for the comment Rusty, thats very complimentary of you to say.

That does seem to be an interesting trend, and theres no doubt that theres room for improvement for the off-pitch product to improve.

They’re ranked from worst to best, but they’re largely there for entertainment value. Usually its a straight 10 – 1 for both teams, but adelaide were that bad…

Brisbane 7-1 Adelaide: Match analysis

Both good picks Dave, I’ve already deleted the replay but that sounds about right. The thing that caught my attention was Broich’s quick passes drawing McKain out the backline, which left Mullen with Nichols and Berisha and mark (for the 2nd goal). The two after HT were more of an after thought – brilliant nonetheless, but Adelaide were walking wounded.

Hey Al thanks for the comment

Bielaa is very famous for his insistence that his team always has a spare man at the back, and you’re right in that he employs a lot of variation in his tactics. In his run to the Copa American with Uruguay he used a combination of 3-4-3, 4-4-1-1 and 4-2-3-1, but never broke up his central midfield combination of Arevelo and Perez. But you’re probably wrong in categorising Biesla as an attack minded manager, as he is famous for his reactive/defensive tactics, though that isn’t to say his teams don’t attack.

Love the format Katie.

Durakovic was way more gung-ho with his shape. It worked against Wellington, but if MVC play with only one real central midfielder (broxham) against brisbane, could be another tennis score. I thought Archie Thompson’s first goal was against the run of play, in the first half the Nix looked fairly lively.

Good tip about Kewell, perhaps theres pressure to consistently field him as a marquee player?

Cheers

Cheers james,

A good place to start is wikipedia. Don’t laugh they’ve got a decent overview of football positions. Then try Zonal Marking. They’ve got a great glossary, fantastic features such as Tactics in the 2000s. Then try Jonathan Wilson’s the Question feature for the Guardian. Good luck and of course,

I wish I could cover them all, but after trying it in Round 1, my head was done in.

Hit the nail on the head Griffo.

Brisbane has just picked up right where they left off, while the other teams are struggling to get going. Its a massive indictment of the fitness regimes at other clubs. The Roar lost as many if not more players than the other HAL clubs, how come their players have already bedded in?

Thanks Dave, that’s a massive compliment. ZM actually covered last year’s Grand Final. I got in touch with Michael Cox and he was very supportive, and quite complimentary about the A-League .

Thanks for your support Enke,

Yes the situation does look rather hopeless for the other 9 clubs at the moment. No team is immortal though, even Barcelona have been beaten.

Well if people are finding my style easy to read, I’m clearly not using the thesaurus enough yet…. 🙂

Thanks for the compliment jmac. I think in the end, I derive more enjoyment than frustration from writing the blog, so I’ll keep at it, so long as there’s demand for it.

Hey Pete, appreciate your support.

Just wanted to add something on Berisha which I forgot to copy/paste into this article

“I don’t mean to say Berisha is a simple poacher, his aggression and pace is used to push back the opposition centre backs and expand the space between their defence and midfield.”
