Just to clarify, the Test when Australia was bowled out for 36 was a draw as was the next one. They won the next two to win the series and lost the Fifth Test. This turned out to be one of the great Ashes series and the 1902 Australians were hailed as the best to tour England- all after that 36 all out!

Thanks for the comments sheek. I have read in a couple of places about Cowdrey and the vice captaincy including this from Wisden:
“A further difficulty of leadership was Cowdrey’s inability to come to terms with his position as vice-captain. He had long hesitated before accepting the appointment, and his cricket might not have been such a disappointment, if he had allowed himself to be absorbed into the body of the team. As it was, his slip catching went to pieces and with the bat he played only one worthy innings before the final stages in New Zealand. Even that was on a minor occasion in Tasmania, for his only century, against Victoria, was a demoralising struggle that contributed to the team’s only defeat in a first-class game.”
The O’Reilly Stand was the Bob stand in those days.

Pravin has since taken 1 -9 for TKR off 4 overs, 15 dots and 9 singles off his bowling and another great catch: https://www.outlookindia.com/website/story/sports-news-cpl-2020-pravin-tambe-ages-like-fine-wine-watch-48-year-old-takes-stunning-catch/359961#:~:text=Tambe%2C%20a%20veteran%20of%20many,in%20the%20UAE%20in%202018.&text=And%20the%20leg%2Dspinner%20continues%20to%20prove%20his%20worth.
Spinners who found the fountain of youth
Since this was written Tambe has taken 1 for 12 off 4 overs in the TKR win in the CPL. He also took an athletic catch- not bad for a 48 year old.

Some lovely detailed reflections on Chauhan here Tiger. Thank you. I enjoyed researching him for the Australian links because that series in 1977-78 brings back such fond memories as a young cricket follower who was deeply opposed to WSC! Another interesting article is here https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id/29678235/chetan-chauhan-bat-last-man
It includes a story of him scoring a century in a Ranji Trophy final with a wired jaw.
Chetan Chauhan: A born fighter
Thanks Sheek. I really enjoyed looking at his career. Interestingly, he had his National service call-up papers in 1966 but was able to have this deferred because of his studies in architecture. He made the tour as a replacement for Doug Walters whose call-up was not deferred.
Graeme 'Beatle' Watson: A very full life
Thanks Paul. He was also a very fine fielder and obviously very athletic (when not injured!) given that he played VFL for the Demons.
Graeme 'Beatle' Watson: A very full life
And Tim May made only two scores over 50 in first class cricket- one of them being 128 no!
What is it about Aussie Test spinners making 99?
Of course, that brilliant night watchmen effort v India. Peter Taylor ( Test top score 87) also made one first class hundred- 105 no.
What is it about Aussie Test spinners making 99?
Yes so O’Keefe got this wrong and omitted Casson. Warney and Agar like other post WWII Aussie Test spinners made first class hundreds- Johnny Martin 101, Peter Sleep 109, Tom Hogan 115 no, Trevor Hohns 103, Jason Krejza 101no

We've just seen one of the greatest rarities in Ashes cricket
Sam Robson has been playing in England for 6 -7 years. It is not as if he has just parachuted in and suddenly been picked. He was not really given much of a look in by selectors in Australia so I say good luck to him. It was tremendous that he scored a century last Test and that his brother, Angus, then scored a ton against India the next Saturday – both in front of a very proud mum and dad. Sam and Angus have worked hard and taken their opportunities.
Is picking from your own really that difficult?
Thanks very much James P. If you click on my name you will get access to some other cricket history pieces that I have done for The Roar. See what you think.
Rogers: second oldest behind Arthur who?
Sheek,
Thanks for that interesting follow up. Monty Noble labelled Kippax’s exclusion from 1926 in favour of Richardson as “a crime against the youth of Australia.” Kippax was hard done by certainly but Richardson’s 100 at Leeds justified his selection.

Rogers: second oldest behind Arthur who?
Tremendous trip down memory lane . One of mu favourite series as I was so opposed to WSC as a 14 year old curmudgeon. An article on the 5th Test of that summer when India was set an imposing total to wi. The series would be great Tigerbill.
