Management obviously made some changes that didn’t work, but I’m happy they are prepared to change things on the go. Agree with all your sentiments on Penrith.
White powder, rule changes and Panthers get job done: Lessons learnt from 2021
Valid points. As you say Souths had the dream run through the finals compared to Penrith. I thought they should have started favorites. But I give credit to the unbelievable toughness and determination of Penrith, which had a lot to do with their coaching. Despite the advantages Souths had, on grand final day they met a team it was going to take an extraordinary performance to beat. And they all but produced that. Put that down to Bennett.

Can’t argue that the winners are the only ones who are remembered. And Penrith thoroughly deserved it. But while it’s still fresh in our minds full credit to both sides and both coaches.

You are completely right of course. But it’s my highlight

Objection your honor, speculative! Well written though.
Did missing Mitchell cost the Bunnies a premiership?
Could there be one more category, winning coaches in teams that could have coached themselves? I’m certainly not referring to the legends you mention or to Cleary here. Now that the gorilla is off his back that has to release the pressure valve just a little and make the job a bit easier. I reckon if he doesn’t win more premierships he’ll go extremely close.
Cleary confirms it: There are just three kinds of successful NRL coaches
It was very impressive. You make some good points Paul. I thought he looked disinterested when he was coaching Newcastle – almost like he was half asleep in the coach’s box, and that he was close to the end then. But he’s been very switched on and at his best at Souths. It will be interesting to see how long he keeps going.

Premiership window over? Harsh reality facing Souths as they deal with life after Bennett and Reynolds
Harsh words but maybe true. Penrith could get even better, the Roosters could well start favorites, and Melbourne will be Melbourne. I agree that next year’s Souths won’t be in the league of these teams.

Royce Simmons running through brick walls, and even Glen Lazarus, to make sure it wasn’t second time unlucky. Take your pick for Penrith this week. JFH, Kikau, To’o? Who knows – Dylan Edwards?

The famous Red V: Why the end of the 2021 season cannot come quickly enough
Thanks 2blues. Well deserved tribute to one of the best players and the best RL TV personality. You summed up a career of amazing achievements very well. You can understand why Channel 9 isn’t happy, and neither will be all the hosts and co-hosts. He’s the man everyone wanted to work with. As you point out, he did it in the best possible way.
A tribute to league commentary legend Peter Sterling
Yeah, interesting. With him and Suli we know what they are capable of, but it’s what they end up delivering.
The famous Red V: Why the end of the 2021 season cannot come quickly enough
A good article Graeme. I agree, SuÁ is probably the best offseason signing, and reckon Mbye still has plenty to offer. Burgess is a big gamble. His hip is close to its use-by-date and how it will hold up is questionable. This could be for his pension fund. Hopefully, the young backline will develop into stars over the next couple of years. Plenty of optimism is needed to get too excited.

Very impressive on the stats Mark. You would put Roy Masters to shame. I was surprised that the Panthers were favoured by the bookies. Thanks for explaining it. Still, all that counts for nothing once the game gets underway. It then becomes the unpredictable drama of sport and individuals defying the odds.

Wests and Tigers: Time to separate the black from the gold
Very nicely written Dimitri, and a good tribute. Funnily enough, I have fond memories of 2005 even though Benji and his team bundled my Dragons side out. But I found it impossible to hate them. I went to a lot of Tigers games that year because they were so entertaining. Once they got on a roll they could produce blowouts similar to this year – through Benji magic, not rule changes. I was lucky enough to go to the GF as well. Fantastic!
