Cyril was miles better than Tippa. He could chase and tackle in defence for starters.
AFL NEWS: Beloved Bomber calls time, AFL lock in 2:30pm grand final start time
I like to think this sort of attitude and approach to life is slowly and carefully nurtured over a few decades of gradually realising that there’s only a couple of people in the world who can do what you do on a cricket field – and they’re either long dead or play for a different country anyway.
RIP Roy. Always in my all-time ODI XI
BRETT GEEVES: The night Roy threw a beer at my head and won my heart forever
So we should never organise this again because it might rain?
Honestly Stuart, it’s May for chrissake. I’m used to this argument being mounted around cricket time as to why day/night tests in Brisbane are a bad idea (it starts raining in the afternoon, duh) but there’s no history of lotsa rain in May so I’d just say heaven forbid the NRL is a tad unlucky.
I seem to recall a game being played in Perth one year between Broncos and Souths famous for a bomb dive by I think Rhys Wesser after a kick from John Sutton stopped in the ingoals in a large puddle of water on the field. Wet weather footy can be engrossing. Suck it up for a weekend you’ll be fine.
Magic Round just became aquatic round: Why you should never play eight NRL games at the same venue
What’s worse is they say that spray was justified because the Crows won the next two flags. So Blighty knew for sure they were gonna win the premiership when he said it? Righto then
No room for David Noble’s spray in modern AFL
Great comment. Simpson deserves to have those words branded to his forehead for the rest of his days every time one of these jumped up little private school sprogs goes off on a bender
Eagles players let down the club with clubbing incident
If only the VFL hadn’t sent themselves broke and desperately needed the money from interstate to keep their struggling little comp afloat.
You’re asking a queenslander to feel sorry for victorians, don’t expect that any time soon.
Bit of a stretch to still be upset about the Roys with Suns/Giants being founded some 16 years after the fact. Brisbane Bears can’t have been that putrid, Alistair Lynch didn’t think so when he walked out on your rubbish little club and nailed the final nail in your coffin.
You can take Fitzroy out of the AFL, but you can’t take it out of the people
Just me, I know plenty who still follow the Roys.
One swallow does not make a summer
You can take Fitzroy out of the AFL, but you can’t take it out of the people
Nice article. Your experience is what I’ve suggested most Fitzroy desperadoes do who whinge that the Brisbane Lions don’t represent them enough.
This is Brisbane’s team now. Melbourne has 9 others. Go follow one of them, or go cheer for Fitzroy in the VAFA.
You can take Fitzroy out of the AFL, but you can’t take it out of the people
Lions, suns and gws also have academies not that you’d know it from this piece
BRETT GEEVES: Are the Swans still 'cheating with that bloody academy' - or time to cut them a break?
“The bump will be back, if you get knocked out too bad sport. Time to put the skirt on, get the op done and join netball’s ranks.”
You were doing alright up until this rubbish. Anyone who thinks a return to guys being allowed to hit other blokes in the head is what the game needs is not worth listening to. The bump never left, they just said if you choose to bump you have to make sure you don’t contact the head. Funnily enough a lot of players decided it wasn’t worth the risk at that point…
AFL House does it again - creating more problems than they solve
More like 2-3%.
And I’m sure there are gay players playing but like any good professional they don’t want the distraction outing themselves would cause to their career.
It's 2022, 'the heat of the moment' is not an excuse for homophobia
It’s definitely reducing, but it’s never going to be totally eradicated. That’s why I’m not upset by it when it still happens, it’s inevitable it will crop up again and it’s just some ignorant fool losing his mind in the heat of the moment.
It’s like punches being thrown on the football field. People always says we’ve finally put it to bed but you never know what someone is gonna do in the heat of the moment and I certainly wouldn’t say we’ve ever seen the last of the biff despite all the work to suppress and get rid of it.
It's 2022, 'the heat of the moment' is not an excuse for homophobia
It sure is, but only to describe those annoying gays whose sexuality is their entire personality.
No self-respecting gay man would ever unleash that slur against another gay man trying to be a well-rounded individual.
It's 2022, 'the heat of the moment' is not an excuse for homophobia
I cannot see any future where that word isn’t thrown around – there’s always going to be a bunch of unreconstructed straight blokes who think the very worst insult to another straight bloke is to use an epithet to imply they prefer the company of men.
It does strike me though that the only person who get upset by this sort of thing are straight people – I assure you as someone who’s been out and gay for well over 10 years your average gay man has heard/seen/endured far worse from all sorts of people and could not give the slightest of stuffs what some cretinous footballer on the one way path to a mushy brain is saying that got picked up by a hot mike.
It's 2022, 'the heat of the moment' is not an excuse for homophobia
Kim Hagdorn thinks he has 😂
AFL NEWS: Hurt Hickey bites Swans, more COVID drama out west
I thought it was a disgrace that they dropped Broad and Anderson for basically demanding too high standards from the team – glad the side they did pick got thumped (gladder than usual, anyway). Those two carried England for over a decade and basically got thrown out with the garbage. No wonder KP used to rip Strauss every chance he got, worst leader of Team England since Neville Chamberlain.

Dear footy fans: Stop saying you want North or Gold Coast to move to Tassie
The charge was that he’d intentionally gone for the eyes – his argument was that it should be downgraded to careless as it wasn’t deliberate and was accidental. I believe him, and evidently the tribunal did too.
AFL NEWS: No appeal despite Rioli dodging ban but Thomas says tribunal got it right, Bomber grounded
Ah fair enough. Must have been when I was off getting a beer. I needed one after that second quarter.
AFL NEWS: Sloane, Rioli get off but Robinson banned, Axe hovering over coach despite win, Aliir out
Yeah, she claps her $5000 ruby red shoes together, says there’s no place like home and they all get transported back to Subiaco or Peppermint Grove, both are apt.
BRETT GEEVES: Kane Cornes' 'respect' whack for Jack Ginnivan was fair, and revealed plenty about their generations
Aliir hurt his ankle when he went down dropping the mark, you could see it on his face, big flash of pain, good on him to be able to get up and compete almost straight away given a pretty severe injury. Some DrONe on here said he was castigating himself – typical comment from someone who hasn’t been near a white line since chalkboards and chalk got phased out of his classroom.
Glad for McKenzie that looked like an ACL for all money when it happened.
If the Suns sack Dew for Clarko it will be a disgrace. Jesus Christ himself could not get that team to the 8, and will just be a re-run of when they burnt McKenna to go nowhere for a decade. Turns out he was actually getting quite a lot of that team and was punching above his weight, I reckon they’re overrating themselves again down on the Coast, not an uncommon thing for people on those parts.

“Pretty poor there from another leader of the football club, and suddenly the game’s getting away from you from a confidence perspective.”
Like when you decided the only way to win your round 22 game against the Hawks was to shoulder charge one of their inside mids in the head Lloydy – got yourself suspended for next week’s final which you lost of course. Well done mate. Flog off.
nothing to see with Daniher’s contract, the AFL won’t sanction us over this and we only structured Joe’s contract like this to account for the AFL’s silly compo rules – it’s the AFL’s own fault. Just sign off it and avoid the embarassment.
AFL NEWS: Daniher contract controversy, 'bruise-free' Bombers and 'disrespectful' Saint slammed, Dogs gun signs long-term deal
Was at the game last night – first thing, crowd was just over 25000 but it always feels like more than that, the noise is pretty intense and definitely helped us a bit a few times in the game.
I thought there was a lot of free kicks being blown, did make it a very stop start affair at times, although both sides didn’t help by also crabbing it round the sidelines at times and constantly turning it over with bad kicking.
As others have said it was very humid and sweaty in there, warm night, would have been very tough for the players. Not a game that will be remembered, good to see us get the win but on that form so far we aren’t worrying anyone. Even if we click and are going well it still strikes me that a forward line of Cameron Rayner and McCarthy seems easier to nullify for long periods of the game than it should be. Daniher of course is always dangerous but yeah. If he plays well in September we will go alright. I reckon we make the 8 this year just on home advantage alone but from there who knows.
Great to see footy back with a big crowd – it really felt like a breath of beer soaked sweaty fresh air at the Gabba last night

Where’s all the people who were ripping into Head and calling for a 35 year old with a history of slow scoring and underperformance on the big stage
FLEM'S VERDICT: Engaging, proactive Head just solved a massive problem in style
I gather things are quite a bit worse in the UK in Australia in terms of inequality, 160 pounds for a ticket, that is insane – a Gabba ticket can be had for well under $50 if you don’t mind where you sit or what day you go on – as always, the lack of diversity at the elite levels or just below the elite levels has everything to do with what goes on at lower levels, where there are no cameras, no tribunal, and the standards of the racial discrimination act are rarely present and able to be enforced in the spur of the moment.
Re: Greg Barclay I don’t know many CEO’s whose job it is to go and talk down their product. What a money hungry scumsucker he must be.
