Absolutely I understand all your points, I think Federer does have one more slam left in him (Wimbledon) but I do believe it is a long shot but if he was to win another it would be Wimbledon. The grass allows him to play quicker points and he was very close to beating Djokovic last year.
But yes, with age on the side of Djokovic and Nadal, logic says they should overtake Federer but we never know in tennis.
I absolutely agree with you that 3 slams is significant for Djokovic to make up ground on. As I stated in my article I think people underestimate that it will only get harder for all of the big 3 especially with the chasing pack in Thiem, Tsitsipas, Medvedev and Zverev getting closer.
Personally I also agree with you that Slams are the MAIN metrics in which we measure the GOAT debate.

Hi Niranjan, thanks for reading my article and you make great points which I completely understand and acknowledge. I think the overall GOAT debate will always be subjective and different people will believe in different metrics which could all arguably be completely viable.
I think one thing we can all agree on is that, as a lover of tennis, I’m just happy to live in a time where we have three players who could even provide us with this debate, it’s just unbelievable.

I do recall that earlier in Novak’s career that he was somewhat popular or at least not as polarising as he is now with crowds. I’m not sure what the specific root cause of why that fell away but if I had to guess then it would be that simply Novak got better as a player and posed a threat to Nadal and Federer.
Before that he was just an up and coming challenger so it was easier for him to get on his side but as he got better and started beating Nadal and Federer regularly – he became an obstacle to them.

Hey Connor, thanks for reading and commenting! It was very very tough for me to pick certain moments for each players and arguments could be made for Rafa winning Wimbledon 08 and FO 13 semi and you would be justified! That FO 2013 semi against Novak for Rafa was very crucial as he was coming back from a long injury layoff and Novak was closer than ever up until that point to taking the french open.
I think the silver lining is that these great players have created so many memorable moments for us to discuss and choose from!

I think the Australians were at their peak when Rafter, Hewitt and Philippoussis were all fit and firing. Should have probably won more than just the 2003 Davis Cup with those 3 and the Woodies in our Davis Cup team.

I agree with you. I think this is the breaking point between the Australian public and Nick Kyrgios. He’s reached an age (24) where he should be mature enough to understand the baggage that comes with being a professional tennis player, he may not enjoy what he does but there are millions of people out there who are stuck in jobs that they don’t love yet they go in each day and still perform.
In Nick’s case, his job is viewable in the public eye and whether he likes it or not, he is an ambassador for the sport especially for the younger fans who might look up to him. The ATP need to take action not just for Nick’s own sake but for the sake of tennis as well.
You want to nip this behaviour in the bud and restore respectability to the sport, it’s not good to have a player who constantly talks the sport down and brings the game into disrepute week in and week out.
Kyrgios’ camp must throw in the towel
I know what you mean. I think that’s why when people talk about the most memorable tennis matches, they think of Grand Slam contests like Wimbledon 08 men’s final or 2012 Aus Open final. They’re tough physical battles. Let’s hope for more great Grand Slam matches I say!

I agree with your point regarding the gruelling nature of Grand Slam play. Hence why players like Zverev and Kyrgios can chalk up wins over the big 4 but cannot replicate these wins into consistant Grand Slam performances.
You’re right, Masters tournaments used to have their only finals as best of 5 sets but now they have changed it to 3 sets.

Of the field – I think Medvedev has the best chance but that’s not saying that he will win just that he has the best shot. The smart money will still be on Djokovic to win.
