Why not Shaun Marsh? He could at least be vice captain, ready to take over when Watto retires.

Australia needs a captain who's handsome (but not too handsome): Step forward, Watto

I like S Waugh, but he did get it wrong with S Marsh. Warnie got it wrong many times. Rates Stoinis and Short more than Khawaja and Lyon.

Alex Carey should not play in the Ashes

M Marsh is a great 5th bowler, in fact I think he is too attacking with in-swing, but just isn’t good enough at 6. If Carey continues to improve and we have a very solid top-6 then Marsh at 7, Pattinson, Cummins, Starc and Lyon would be a great side.

Alex Carey should not play in the Ashes

Pope is also a wonderful long term prospect. Hope he gets a good run at SA.

I think you’re right, my “world class” definition was not accurate. Only Starc and Cummins would make a world 11 or second 11 team. But I think the context of Warner and Smith being out of world cricket for 12 months, their form on return was great and make a great pair to build around.

True. I wonder if it has something to do with the strong bowling stocks limiting the bowling opportunities of young batting all-rounders. I’d guess that young Vic batsmen would have little hope when the attack is Siddle, Tremain, Boland and Holland. WA would be behind M Marsh. NSW behind Henriques. TAS matches rarely need 5th option.

This was always a WC for ENG and IND to lose. No one thinks AUS (or NZ) had a WC winning side. ENG bossed AUS and would have beaten any side. This was the ENG everyone feared seeing. Many positives for AUS – Smith, Warner, Carey, Starc, Cummins, Lyon – all world class. Add in J Richardson, M Marsh and one more solid middle order batter (Khawaja, S Marsh) and AUS would have had a shot on a normal ENG performance, but it mattered little yesterday. Will Sutherland could be a good future all rounder for next WC, really impressed with the ball. Add Agar and Turner and next WC could be full of quality all-rounders.

Not a long way off. Wade doesn’t keep in FC cricket. No real alternatives. I still rate Neville with gloves and bat, but his time has passed I guess.

Agree. His missed stumping off Maxwell and catch off NCN were awful. Would have killed their confidence. In a test match these errors would be even more costly. That said, I don’t think he is far off and looked great with the bat.

Australia had a genuine chance at a 6th cup because ENG and IND underperformed in leadup to the semi. AUS performed a bit better than expected, hiding their flaws. Then ENG blew them away with a complete game, thoroughly exposing AUS weaknesses. ENG would have beaten any side yesterday. Had they batted first, they would have scored 400 against any attack.

Maxwell is a match winner with the bat, not a match saver. He can be a match saver with the ball, avoiding blowouts. Next time Carey will come in ahead, and hopefully M Marsh, and hopefully no injuries to #3. Maxwell at 7 when batting first is well worth the risk.

Wounded Australia fall to South Africa, drop top spot ahead of World Cup finals

A Starc injury would be disastrous. The only positive is that we likely face a road, and on a road, K Richardson wouldn’t be awful. Despite the poor bowling/good SAF batting, I think the Australian bowling and Finch’s captaincy showed good flexibility. Could have easily been 350+ They did well to contain. Great to see Maxie and Lyon get good overs.

Any chance of IND tanking their last match against SL? IND likely go into this match having 15 points (wins vs WI, ENG & BAN) and SL 10 points (wins vs SA and WI). SL would be playing for 4th spot, IND would be playing for 1st spot, but if IND wins 1st spot they would then play ENG in the semi. If IND loses they knock ENG out and possibly then play SL again in a semi.

Australia leave England in World Cup disarray

More likely it will be an off day against SL , particularly if they have #1 confirmed (e.g. NZ beating AUS). Quite possibly, they will then face SL in the semi again (if SL beat SA and WI in their lead up games), rather than ENG.

Australia leave England in World Cup disarray

Really good analysis Ronan. Only disagreement is Stoinis as the wildcard, though I understand why you may have put him there. I think the wildcard is the Aussie spinner Zampa/Lyon or fourth seamer. I think ENG will look to see off Starc and Cummins then attack the middle overs bowlers, particularly if chasing (or maybe they will just go all guns blazing!?). If AUS go in unchanged, Zampa will be critical. If they bring in Lyon, that’s a heck of a wildcard off the bench.

Australia vs England: 2019 Cricket World Cup preview

Sure, in retrospect they had bowlers going in under serious injury clouds, but it is hard to know the impact of this beforehand. Australia also had a “recipe for disaster” , but Starc has performed very well after injury come back and Smith/Warner have performed after their break. This was highly uncertain. Many people talk of how Hazlewood should have been in the side after injury too. Who knows if he would have performed?

Groundhog Day all over again for the Proteas

I agree Dave. They had a great bowling unit on paper – Steyn, Ngidi, Rabada and Tahir – and probably Phehlukwayo has over performed in the all rounder role. They lacked batting depth, but on a cloudy green-top they could have wreaked havoc. As a casual observer, I didn’t appreciate the extent of the injuries to their bowlers. Now in retrospect we are all experts on this!

Groundhog Day all over again for the Proteas

I actually think the best teams have won almost all of the games, irrespective of the toss. Australia has lost 5 consecutive tosses, but deserve to be 4-1. The toss advantaged Pakistan and WI, and it was very entertaining because only the premier bowlers were able to make use of it, with middle over fade-outs. Poor fielding and mediocre 3rd to 5th bowlers has been the decisive factor (SAF made many mistakes in the field last night BTW). This is the way it should be. Batmen just trying to survive Bumrah, Kumar, Starc, Cummins, Amir, Archer, Ferguson and Rabada, then punishing the lesser bowlers. While it sucks for AUS fans that we can’t be confident of getting 10 overs from Stoinis or Maxwell (or even NCN, B’dorff and Richardson) it’s a more interesting than seeing teams rely on 4 or 5 bits and pieces, middle over trundlers.

Spinners are struggling in this World Cup

There were always two standout teams – ENG and IND – plus AUS and NZ, with potential hopefuls of WI, SAF, PAK and BAN. Unfortunately most of the marquee games are at the back end of the fixture. The only one we have seen yet is AUS v IND, with IND v NZ washed out. Scheduling ENG’s last three games against AUS, IND and NZ (and NZ’s last two vs AUS and ENG) has hurt the momentum. The biggest impact has been injuries. AUS lost to IND, but IND are now without Dhawan and Kumar. ENG have lost Roy. Still, the fixture has been a dream for AUS and NZ. AUS still have time to figure out their best 11, give Zampa more time (or bring in Lyon) and even bring in M Marsh/Hazelwood. NZ can ease Southee back in.

Meaningless fortnight looms at World Cup

Agree entirely that this discussion is primarily due to rain and under-performance of PAK, WI and SAF. We’ll see abut BAN, but if they lose to AUS, they will be thrown into the same group. SL are hopeless and AFG are minnows and met expectations of being completely impotent. IMO the Super Sixes approach was the best, but I feel that the organisers wanted to maximise the number of games played by India and England, and pre-sale tickets.

Meaningless fortnight looms at World Cup

Some of it was predictable, but WI and PAK under-performed and SAF was hurt by injuries. It could have been different. SAF bowling line up looked dangerous and capable of rattling the best sides – Rabada, Steyn, Ngidi and Tahir. Injuries hurt them, plus Amla. WI rattled AUS and looked dangerous as a batting unit but never got it on track. In some ways I am pleased, this is not T20 cricket. The best sides have generally won and the losing sides have dropped crucial catches.

Meaningless fortnight looms at World Cup

Is AJ Tye completely of contention? I’m surprised he is part of the squad but he must be there for some reason.

Forgotten Aussie quicks ready to press for World Cup contention

True, but his drop of Pandya was awful. India would have been 3/221 with 12.3 overs to go. They went on to score 132 off 75 balls. Cricinfo said it was the “Fourth regulation catch he’s dropped in the World Cup”. As much as he has done well with the bat, he has to take regulation catches.

Forgotten Aussie quicks ready to press for World Cup contention

I think the format for the WC is okay. I preferred the super sixes approach, but it is not ideal for ticketing to have so many unknown match-ups. Had the rain affected the top-4 sides playing against the others, it would have flattened it out, but not in a good way. Instead, we have a fairly clear top-4 and top-2 which pretty much everyone would have expected. What has sucked is the under-performance of SAF, SL, WI, AFG and PAK (excl. Mohammad Amir). Only BAN has exceeded expectations.

Are the World Cup semi-finalists already locked in?

It was also a classic Pakistan implosion in the field, dropping Finch and Warner three times. Warner was Man of the Match, but really it was Amir that deserved it. Getting 5 wickets when the Aussies were just looking to bat him out was an amazing effort.
