NRL crowd numbers and club memberships across the board are about the same as GWS. Junior participation is way up for AFL, and down for NRL. Dying sport.

Where should the 20th AFL team be based?

Clarko can do more with a terrible list than most coaches can do with a good list.

Think Clarko's a draft genius? Think again

8 of the clubs are from Victoria and 8 are not. I stadium in this country holds 100K fans.
There’s no getting around the facts.

Geelong and Richmond set the standard for excellence, precisely a decade apart

Half the team partying and the other in a prayer circle, club seemed a little unbalanced, hopefully Stu Dew has re-calibrated some of that damage. Hearing Grant Birchall mentioned in connection with the Queensland clubs.

The Hodge intercept goal off the inept Rohan kick in yessssss

Ranking the best Grand Finals of the decade

NRL average attendance this year was just over 15k per game, GWS games averaged just over 12k. Embarrassing yourself posting that.
Maybe get out a bit more.

If it wasn’t such a close match he probably would have. Looking at late footage someone posted today, it’s a bit more clear – more than was available last week but Fagan said it was Neale’s nose, not his face that was affected which might work in Greene’s favour. Be an interesting one.

Hawkins, Greene to front AFL tribunal

That may have been in Launceston against the Cats where he a free was paid to Ablett and Hodge said “That’s right, fkn Gaz, gotta look after fkn Gaz”.

Hawkins, Greene to front AFL tribunal

Hawkins to go, Greene to get off, if they do things right ????

Hawkins, Greene to front AFL tribunal

Formidable combo with Fagan already and smart enough to stick around Brisbane for a few years before a senior coaching job comes up. The Lions came from nowhere (15th 2018) to top 4 and a narrow defeat on Saturday night, unbelievable, you must be pretty happy about that.

Hodge retires after epic AFL final

Umpires should be seen and not heard. I think Razor is a very good umpire, but the business with protecting Charlie Cameron was over the top. If you’re onfield, you’re presumed to be fit to play; since when is “knocking an arm” rough conduct? This is not Touch Footy.

Was that the most over-umpired final ever?

A man amongst men, inspiration and leader. I watch him play his last game with the Hawks and his last game on Saturday night at the Gabba, he directed traffic and generalled both teams until the very end. Him and Fagan, formidable combo at Brisbane.
(Who hates Hodgey? Champion of the game)

I’d say so. Abuse directed at female footy players but not once instance of abuse has derived from male footy players. They both cop it online but never have I seen (nor was I prepared for) the abuse hurled at the right of the girls to play, to represent, to be paid for it. Disgraceful stuff.

Did I say that Big Al?

Good article. I’ve seen and heard some disgraceful abuse directed at females playing footy but not one instance from a male player. Usually angry, under achieving blokes who couldn’t run for a bus. Love this statue and what it represents for all girls, resilience, persistence and aiming high.

Ask Barry Hall.

The good, the bad and the Toby: Greene's gaffes may cost him superstar status

Chris Fagan should order a load of snow for Saturday night. They came good on Saturday, completely neutralised the Doggies, should match up ok against the Lions and the Pies if they get the chance.

WATCH: Toby Greene sent straight to tribunal for serious misconduct

Give a dog a bad name then hang him. As a rule of thumb, Toby is guilty until proven innocent for the punters, but the AFL needs to be above that. How’d the subject of gouging even come up? I’m just suprised that Bont didn’t touch his face afterwards. Hope he’s not suspended on flimsy “evidence”, it was bottom of the pack stuff too.

I was at the game and the incident occurred less than 10m from my seat on the boundary and we watched the footage on the screen later. Marcus Bont got up after the scuffle, but didn’t rub or touch his eye which you’d expect to see after a gouging so I don’t believe it occurred.
Toby is deadest nong and serial pest but on this occasion I am sceptical about the validity of the gouging claim.

Fair point, but attendance and viewership are essential ingredients for promotion and fundraising for a great cause.

The EJ Whitten game makes a mockery of a legend

I think you’re right and the adage “follow the money” – in this case memberships and reduced opportunity for commercial breaks due to low scoring matches – is likely to be a significant factor, although it doesn’t explain the CEO going.
The “unattractive football” has become a cliche for idiots to parrot, but Freo is the 3rd lowest for “points for” in the comp with only Melbourne and Gold Coast behind but they’re 5th stingiest for points kicked against, behind Cats, Pies, Hawks & West Coast, which isn’t bad company.
Low scoring games was targeted by the AFL as an evil with the kick-in rule and 6-6-6 config designed to increase scoring (and therefore commercial breaks). Epic fail but hey, maybe Ross is a convenient scapegoat!

Why Ross Lyon's departure just doesn't add up

Has anyone seen Ross Lyon and Don Freo at the same time?

Fremantle sacks Ross Lyon and CEO

It’s the location. We are paid up Giants members and are personally associated with 8 other members (ironically we all live in the East). Utter barsted of a joint to get to unless you live on the train line. Trains are just dysfunctional, takes hours, bus is worse. Car is expensive to park, nightmare to get out of and we like to have a drink at the footy so that is out. Shame, as they do put on an exceptional game day experience and the Showgrounds are well resourced.

GWS are tearing up the AFL, so where are the fans?
