I read with great interest Mary Konstantopoulos' article ‘Why do we care so much about State of Origin?'. The comments section was filled with…
Hi Riley, thanks for the article. Some good points in there, my team is below.
Who would be your bench?
1. Slater
2. Gagai – hard to leave him out after his origin performances over the last 2 years
3. Chambers
4. Boyd – played well in origin at centre and seems the most effective way to get him into the side
5. Trbojevic, T
6. Morgan
7. Cronk
8. Klemmer
9. Smith
10. Woods – we all know the selectors will.pick woods so have him in my team for realism. My preferred option would be a straight swap for Vaughn
11. Cordner
12. Gillett
13. Trbojevic, Jake
14. Munster – can cover every backline position
15. McGuire
16. Fifita
17. Papalli
Who will lineup for the Kangaroos at the World Cup?
If Mitchell Pearce came first doesn’t that make Mitch Marsh the Mitchell Pearce of Australian cricket?

Good point but my gut says leave him on the bench for 20 minutes to soak it all in then send him on to replace Nate Myles.
Napa may well be a key for Qld this series. The fire from not being considered last year after his emerging origin indiscretion and a week in camp could well make him Qld’s most damaging forward prospect.
Who would you have to complete the Qld prop rotation? Would you give Hess a run?
Selecting the NSW Origin side: Six rules to ensure ongoing failure
Front row is the biggest question for Queensland selectors. During the entire 11 year run Qld have always had a tried and tested front row combo. Transitioning from Steve Price and Civoniceva to Myles and Scott happened seamlessly. Now what does Qld do with no Scott and an ageing Myles?
Maybe Myles and Jarrod Wallace to start with Napa & Thaiday to come off the bench. McGuire would play long minutes as a middle third player from lock.

Thanks for the reply Peeko.
Boyd started his career on the wing and only later made the shift to fullback. Inglis started on the wing for both club and state and due to his versatility made the switch to a number of different backline positions across his career.
The early years of Hayne playing on the wing for NSW are an interesting point. Given the devastating effect he had in 2014 maybe he should never have been picked out of position in the first place and played at fullback all along. NSW did lose all of the series he played at wing.
The point I’m trying to make in the article is that picking a number of backline players out of position in Origin has not been a winning formula and should be approached with caution. Unless you are a Queensland fan and are egging NSW to pull the trigger and pick the whole backline out of position.

Thanks Vincent. JT’s return sledge remains brutal to this day.

Wonderful article Kersi. Cricket is at its best when the past gives context to the present. The 40 year anniversary seems the perfect time to formally recognise the statistics and achievements of WSC.
As for the ICC World XI game, I agree it should never have been recognised as statistically a test but if the players were assured the stats would count before taking place i do not think it is fair to retrospectively change the status now. Unfortunately it seems we are stuck with it blighting the record books.

No matter how much you like John Inman, broadcasting ‘Are you being served?’ reruns instead of the Jillaroos game seems shortsighted.
Have a good trip to Canberra.
Women's sport weekly wrap: Bring on the women's university sevens series, but why can't we watch the Jillaroos live?
Thanks Mary! I appreciate the comment. Keep up your great work as well. Looking forward to your next article.
State of Origin is broken: Here's how to fix it
The rugby league calendar is packed and I don’t see where a women’s competition would otherwise fit.
If the choice is between no women’s competition and a four week mid-season comp then you have to go with the mid-season option don’t you?
As for the cost, surely any losses are outweighed by the benefits. With the right marketing and exposure I see no reason why it couldn’t be as successful as the AFLW across a shorter season.
State of Origin is broken: Here's how to fix it
As I understand it Channel Nine doesn’t want origin moved from a Wednesday because of the ratings. Can’t have viewers bled away to AFL / Masterchef Sunday night specials. If I was the AFL and origin was moved to Sunday night I would schedule the biggest game I had (maybe Carlton vs Collingwood) to go up against it and try to lower the Melbourne ratings.
Also, I like the stand alone nature of origin which I think adds to the theatrics.

Hi Matt,
Why don’t you think the women’s matches will work? It seems to have been pretty successful in the AFL.

Thanks for the article Jimmy. Never too early for Origin team speculation. I would go with the following team:
1. Slater
2. Boyd
3. Gagai
4. Chambers
5. Holmes
6. Thurston
7. Cronk
8. Napa
9. Smith
10. Myles
11. Thaiday
12. Gillett
13. McGuire
14. Morgan
15. Papalli
16. Wallace
17. Hess
Slater should slot back in at fullback moving Boyd to the wing where he has always played well for Queensland. Gagai is a more natural centre than winger and he moves to Inglis’ vacated spot with Chambers the other centre. I would go with Holmes on the wing – his speed, agility, size and potential to be a long-term origin player justify his selection.
The make-up of the forward pack is the trickiest selection. Losing Matt Scott is huge and Queensland need to be careful they are not out muscled up front. I would play Nate Myles given his better form and stats for Manly this year. Napa is the other prop with Thaiday, Gillett and McGuire the other starters.
Morgan holds his spot on the bench (milford has not done enough to unseat him). Papalli and Hess get packed for impact with Jarrod Wallace the replacement prop.
My way-too-early Maroons team for State of Origin 2017

Whhhhhhyyyy!!!!!
Come back Freddie.
