To cause a stir, someone would have to care what he thinks

Is this what we’re doing now, posting tiktok videos?

WATCH: American TikToker causes a stir with viral roast of rugby

Numbers are not too bad, but the majority of our clubs don’t charge for entry so it’s not really that relevant.

Spirit used to ‘fill the hill’ as we say, every week, though.

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

Look mate I’m sorry if I went a bit hard, but it’s been 15 years (at least) of this argument, and still nothing has changed, we’re all being held hostage by these selfish you-know-whats.
The only way you’re going to get clubs to fill this role is by elevating certain clubs above the others – this would seem to be the reason these particular clubs are so set on this idea.
But what do I care in WA about which suburb of Sydney has the more important club?
All I know is that our very popular NRC team can no longer play because of insular politics amongst a group of old boys in another state who all apparently think their particular club is more important than the national health of the game.
If Kalamunda, Cottesloe, Palmyra and Neddies players and fans can all come together in the name of WA rugby, why in the h-ll can’t you lot?
Every other sport in every other nation understands the need for representative teams, Sydney either needs to be dragged into this model or left out of it, and let the rest of us go on with it.

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

As for tribalism, people mention that if they’d been established 15 years ago….well unfortunately they haven’t, and I’d much rather watch Shute Shield over ‘north Sydney rays’ or ‘country eagles’ as that is what I have spent the last 20 years watching.

It wasn’t unfortunate, it was deliberate, and it was the exact flawed reasoning you put here that caused it.
The Shute Shield is not the same level as the NRC
That’s the point
How many times must this be said?

I say we go ahead and leave these recalcitrant clubs and their troglodyte followers to wallow in the past, revive the NRC without them and let them wither and die.

Why should the rest of the country suffer indefinitely because they won’t look outside their suburbs?

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

It was plenty popular here, it was popular in Canberra, it was popular in Melbourne, even QLD and NSW had decent crowds on occasion, despite the white anting by the clubs afraid of losing their prestige.
It wasn’t killed because it wasn’t popular, it was killed because it threatened the status quo. Which is why I find it odd you’re so against it when you say you are keen to change the way things are done.

The NRL is a different beast – all the best players play here in Australia in this one comp.
There’s not a massive, lucrative market overseas threatening their player stocks.

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

With respect you’re proposing going back to a model which was obsolete 30 years ago.

You keep claiming that no one was interested in the NRC, but this is patently untrue

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

the reason the nrc failed is because of the confected teams.

The reason the NRC “failed” is that certain clubs in NSW and QLD threw their toys out of the pram and wouldn’t get on board, and the ARU caved to them.

Get over it, your local club is not a place to develop top level talent, every other nation understands this

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

A final note on tribalism. It needs to start somewhere. If the ARC had continued, the organisations involved would now be 15 years old. Would that have been long enough for people to become invested?

I made this exact point a few days ago – we’ve spent 15 years faffing about trying to transplant “tribalism” in from elsewhere, when we could have easily built it by now

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

NRL Power Rankings: Souths slide, Raiders rise, Roosters fall and up, up Cronulla

Also welcome west to young Williams – Cron already having an effect on recruitment by the looks.

Rugby News: Eddie warns of 'abusive crowds', Suli's new deal, Ex-Wallaby slams 'stupidest' RA threat, Tah joins Force

There was absolutely nothing wrong with the NRC, or the ARC before it – it simply didn’t suit certain people who lived close enough to RA headquarters to have their ear.

If it hadn’t been white anted by self serving clubs back in the day, the ARC would be celebrating 15 years this year.

All this nonsense arguing about formats and what will and won’t work and ‘tribalism’ (god I’m sick of that word) is the problem.

A bad comp today is far far better than a perfect one tomorrow.

Tribalism is something that is built over time – there’s no other way to create it. If they’d just stuck to the format in the first place, the original teams would have 15 years of history – there’s your tribalism right there.

Should we give Super Rugby the flick forever?

Those rascals!
It was the Kiwis all along!

Rugby News: RA threatens to quit Super Rugby, Skelton 'hurt' by England tour snub, Ella feted as Cook Cup name axed

So, to use my below analogy – should Einstein be held responsible, ridiculed, his work belittled and his name besmirched because someone later used his theories to create nuclear weapons?

I mean the link is about as strong, someone came along and exploited what he’d done for their own causes.

he does not, he’s just an urban legend invented to scare fly halves

The “thieves of the Pacific”?

Yep, though I don’t think offended is the term.

I mean who takes offence at what a cup is called?

Well he was president of Lydney for 70 odd years – probably them

Maybe so.
Samoa has a long history of supplying NFL players Ken, but I have to admit I have trouble imagining those big boys playing soccer

Rugby News: RA threatens to quit Super Rugby, Skelton 'hurt' by England tour snub, Ella feted as Cook Cup name axed

There’s a connection, sure – but you could say that about so many things and people.
Surely there are worse figures who arose between Cook planting his flag and the ensuing genocides.
To me it seems the movement against Cook is solely because he represents European arrival in Australia, and has nothing to do with the man himself
It’s like hating Einstein because the US dropped a nuclear bomb

It’s changed that many times that it’s a bit irrelevant tbh
