Marsh brothers on thin ice
Take out the mentions of premiership success and it retains all validity. Gained a great deal of respect for the Pies this year; Buckley’s grace and humility are truly admirable and it has been echoed in the on-field performances. It’s amazing what culture and unity will do for a team’s output. Ostensibly far from the most talented list, but Collingwood have obviously put in place some excellent systems behind closed doors and are doing a lot of things right. Kudos and good luck to them next year.

For sure the first half was pretty scrappy in parts, but the very fact that it could turn around as much as it did on the whole and for a number of individuals does make it a pretty special game. That it was so close after the initial threat of a blowout in the first quarter; that it had so many twists and turns; controversy; a game-sealing goal from the boundary and that it kept 100,022 people enthralled at the game plus millions at home… if not a classic then pretty close to it.
A close grand final does not a classic make
Interesting that for the better part of the season, the Cats only seem to let loose when the game is on the line or seemingly gone. Perhaps we saw this shift in the last two weeks against Freo and GC; yes they are weak opponents, but often Geelong don’t put those sides away to the extent they did. Pulsating and uncompromising; if they can bring that from first bounce to final siren tonight, there is no question in my mind that they’ll get up.
Can the lacklustre Cats salvage their season with a finals run?

Agreed, Peter. As a Cats’ fan, I felt as though if we made the finals (looks all but assured now) that we’ll make a better fist of it than we have in recent years. We have beaten or come very close to all the teams above us, so it’s shaping up nicely. Either way, it’s been a terrific season all round and doesn’t look like slowing down in September.

I tend to agree; he adopts an aggressive and tunnel vision sort of mindset. Perhaps his is more visible as it manifests itself more in the form of body language and overt celebration as opposed to sledging and vocal support/ intimidation that the majority of us can’t perceive.

Well there you have it; an incredible turn around by the Western Bulldogs to overrun the Saints in a dominant second half. THough St Kilda were on top for the most part of the first and second quarters, the Dogs found their rhythm in the latter part of the first half, finding their run, pressure and intent.
The third quarter was where the game was won, however. As the Dogs piled on 8 unanswered goals, 4 of which came from their skipper Marcus Bontempelli. They were irresistible in the premiership quarter, producing a performance reminiscent of their 2016 form. The likes of Bontempelli and Johannisen were crucial, as JJ picked up 42 touches, and the Bont racked up 22 to go with his 4 goals.
For St Kilda, Seb Ross was impressive in the first half but didn’t have enough mates in the second, as he finished the match with 40 touches and 3 goals.
The Dogs were impressive tonight and owned the stoppages and were far more efficient going forward. This, combined with their often manic pressure and intent to go through the middle of the ground saw them too strong for the Saints.
Next week, St Kilda face Essendon on a Friday night fixture, and the Dogs will take on North Melbourne.
