At that point in the game Rowdy the top six hadn’t done enough, it had to be him and he happened to be the captain. He led I guess by also farming the strike really well.

Cummins’ captaincy far from perfect as Ashes hang in the balance but some critics need to woke up to themselves

What about a point and a deep point for Root?

Cummins determination to dig in and produce a quality innings with Lyon, in getting Australia across the line was a great example of leading from the front

“The aspect Cummins has to work on is not the initial planning but a) what does he do when the best laid plans don’t work and b) how quickly does he react and make changes.“ ie Deep point when Root comes in and gets singles. No start with a normal point and even cover point. This is more initial planning when Root comes in 2. When Woakes came in during the third test he repeatedly popped the ball over short legs head. He needed to have another fielder in there. Just a couple of examples .

It is still too early to make a call on Cummins captaincy. I’m sure he is grieving the loss of his mother still. The impact of this is immeasurable. If he retains the Ashes that should be seen as a massive achievement.

What an interesting thought Tim. We won’t know unless he is given a go. If the conditions at Manchester are a seamers paradise, Neser must be picked. If not the selectors need to release him back to Glamorgan and stop playing silly games.

Ashes Scout: Langer warns Aussies over mid-tour holiday, expert panel wants ODIs cut back, England make Bairstow call

“Neser is worthy of being first reserve and will do a good job if selected. But he is not as good a bowler as the top 3 pacers and shouldn’t be selected over them for mine.”Why? Hazlewood has hardly played any test cricket in 18 mths and is still being “managed” with his fitness. Hasn’t performed in England.Whilst Neser has produced a top ranking 40 wickets in Shield and is fit and getting time in the middle and performing with ball and bat in England. He is the equal or better than an underperforming Hazlewood. His bowling has more swing and seam than Hazlewood. He gives Australia depth in batting which Hazlewood doesn’t. The only thing that is keeping Hazlewood in, is Cummins preference and bias. Having said that, the predicted conditions will suit both Hazlewood and Neser I would play them both and drop Murphy. It is clearly going to be seaming conditions.

Ashes Scout: Neser's career-best stunner, tactical shift that turbocharged Starc, Pom wants more 'nonsense'

In the top 20 ICC test all rounder rankings position 18. S Broad, 19 N Lyon 20. C Green. Green scrapes in. That is how he is viewed. Even Nathan Lyon is higher. This puts some perspective on Green’s status as an all rounder. Not enough runs and not enough wickets. He needs to deliver.

Will never happen , too much Cricket tradition.

Strengthen the batting, correct. A draw is all we need.

Potentially this could be the first draw for the series. Despite England saying that a draw doesn’t figure in their thinking. Yes we retain the Ashes. However if this was the case, it should just spur us on to finish the job and win in the last test.

Rain and showers are predicted for every day leading up to the Manchester test and during the test. This will obviously limit preparation of the wicket and in all likelihood be a seaming wicket. The most seaming of all wickets so far. It is Anderson’s home ground and he will want a seamer. It’s obvious that if this is the case, Neser should play instead of Murphy. It’s very hard for a finger spinner to grip a damp ball.

The absence of Racheal Haynes is being felt as well.

Thanks for the clarification.

Jeff there is a high probability of rain every day for the test. Not the sort of conditions for a finger spinner. Leave Murphy out, Neser in

86 against Tongue, you can’t discount, as much as you try and discredit Neser’s compelling case. Irrespective of what form Green had at Shield level he is stuck. He can’t complete the transition to Test level. He is out of form, short of confidence and should be dropped. It will benefit him in the long term. As I’ve said elsewhere others like Steve Waugh were dropped and came back much better test players. I believe Green needs to decide how he will play Test cricket. It’s an identity crisis. IPL complicated things for him and was the worst preparation for England. Hewould’ve been better to have gone and played county cricket. You can’t keep him in the team for his catching.

.4 of a second to react to a Mark Wood delivery at 95mph from 22 yards away apparently. That is a huge challenge for any batsman.

Surprises on tour for Australia. Boland’s ineffectiveness wasn’t anticipated, Mitch Marsh’s stunning century, Starc’s form a revelation, Making Neser sit on his backside for so long when he should have played in Leeds, Carey’s great keeping and improvement, the poor form of Labs. What is not a surprise is Warner being dismissed by Broad for the 17th time and Cummins struggling with Captaincy.

A real rarity. . His contributions in recent years have been paltry. Also throwing his wicket away unnnecessarily.

So is Neser. His improvement has been outstanding with the number of centuries he has accumulated. Players improve and grow out of the stereotypes we label them with. At the moment Neser will give the returns we have been waiting four years from Green. One century in India, No centuries in OZ and a top score of 38 in England from Green is just not good enough for a number 6. Green hasn’t made it at international level at this stage. His undoubted potential hasn’t been translated into performance. I would like him to go back to Shield and work on his game and hone his skills. Others greater than Green had to go back ie Steve Waugh and returned better players.

It’s the responsibility of the middle to build partnerships with the lower order and to face the majority of the play in doing so.” Did Harry Brook do that with Woakes.? No he trusted Woakes to do his part in the partnership not farm the strike. They put on 59 match winning runs. That’s the sort of partnership with a lower order bowler you want. You can trust them to play their shots not protect them.

India and England I can’t think of two countries with such contrasting pitch and bowling conditions

“No, but the tail will function better if our top order do their job properly and tire Wood out.” Not necessarily. They are still bunnies whom Woakes not necessarily Wood can get out.
