Yeah I know … I think its unlikely that 1st or 2nd year young players (in 2020) would arrive with existing drug dependencies.

Nah that’s just Very-Sore-Loser-Syndrome 😂 . (Every club has them. 😢)

Hehe … I’m just elaborating on what Wilkie said under parliamentary privilege; it’s the ex-Melbourne Doctor that effectively threw these players’ names under the bus. But while I’m at it, Tom Mitchell was mysteriously “managed” on the eve of Round 1 too. 😛

Hahaha … yeah. Great call Chanon! Pity for their supporters really to have had their premiership effort tainted and diminished. They were the best side in 2021 and their long suffering supporters deserved to smell the roses. So now we know the 1995 (Carlton brown paper bag salary cap cheats), 2005 (West Coast drug saga) and 2021 flags were all tainted, as well as Essendon’s 11th placed finish in 2012. 😊

Mr Wilkie said Dr Arain alleged it wasn’t a Melbourne problem but an “AFL problem” with a number of players arriving in the city from other states with pre-existing cocaine dependencies. So which players at Melbourne have arrived from other states in recent times (prior to 2021)? Let me think … May, Lever, Petty … 😱

Good article Cam. Time will tell. Trent Cotchin spent the first half of his career perceived by outsiders as a bit too friendly and a bruise-free, skillful player, but totally changed his image and approach in the second half of his career. He became a very successful, no frills, physical leader. Could Zach Merrett be doing the same? I rate Merrett as a skillful accumulator who avoids heavy contact and can’t be relied upon when the game gets physical. But I hear he is changing his approach this season.

'The Essendon Edge': The Bombers are trying to fake it until they make it

Yep. And The MCG and Marvel and AAMI Stadium in Melbourne have lots of interstate visitors. The public in each state are proud to have such brilliant stadiums that attract great events.

The AFL holding Tasmania to ransom with stadium political football is an utter disgrace

No, but I’m saying MONA brings a lot of tourism to Tasmania, thereby stimulating enormous economic benefits to the state (visitors come for MONA but build a trip around it and spend the money on lots of things). A state-of-the-art stadium will do the same. Plus it will make Tasmanians feel prouder.

The AFL holding Tasmania to ransom with stadium political football is an utter disgrace

Excellent idea. Increase Tasmanians’ rates to fund the stadium. Can maybe even avoid the need for the AFL to chip-in so much. 😊

Yeah but Tassy is colder and wetter than the mainland 😊

The AFL holding Tasmania to ransom with stadium political football is an utter disgrace

It’s crazy how ignorant Tasmanian Stadium nay-sayers are of the collective benefits to the State of having a state-of-the-art, contemporary, multi purpose football-cricket-concert stadium. Consider how well the economy’s stadium would be travelling for Tasmania if MONA didn’t exist, or if MONA was built in a tin shed. The AFL are absolutely right to expect the State to contribute heavily. The AFL and Federal Government are both contributing generously and Tasmanians who vote against this future ‘jewell in the state’ are fools.

Studs-up mark from Toby Greene planting his karate foot into the chest of oncoming player on the weekend. There was a rule brought in by the AFL to outlaw this (known as “the Toby Greene rule”), but I guarantee the MRP won’t cite it. They have hitched their wings to Greene’s reformed good guy image and have long protected GWS at the tribunal. The general media are the same. Nothing to see here.

Six Points: Papley's hypocrisy, Wright's Tribunal verdict the wrong call, and why are we retiring Pendlebury?

Love the honesty, disdain and contempt from Papley. Well done Swans. No surprise to see this misguided strategy from Brad Scott – I remember one day he got several North players to target a young Bont off-the-ball early in a match and it backfired humiliatingly for North.

I wonder what Dimma thinks about playing at Ballarat. 😂

'Dripping in inequality and stupidity': Footy is back... and so is AFL interference

I agree with you Cam. The scattered distribution of Byes across the season and incorrect numbering of Rounds is a mess. It’s not exactly a massive problem but it is stupid and unnecessary. Not a good start by Andrew Dillon and his team.

'Dripping in inequality and stupidity': Footy is back... and so is AFL interference

Dusty will be remembered and feted like Leigh Matthews, Wayne Cary, Ablett Senior. Danger will be forgotten by most long after he has retired – he’s just another very good player of his generation. Pendlebury is a better player than Danger.

Six Points: Meet the AFL's dumbest team, and the most ridiculous ban in MRO history

You’re kidding. Paddy Dangerfield is a very good player and Brownlow medallist and good bloke – but he’s always been shonky in front of goals when games are in the balance (last weekend being a rare exception) and isn’t in the conversation of all time greats. Dusty will always be regarded as an all-time champion of the game due to his finals exploits and steering Richmond to 3 flags. Without him, they would have struggled to win a final, let along a flag. He was BOG in nearly every final he played over many years. Best Finals Player Resume of anyone in the history of the AFL I reckon.

Please leave Fyfe and Young playing Onball … it’s good for my Fantasy Footy side. Which means O’Meara might need to play elsewhere.

I feel your frustration Tim. “Beveridge regularly gives young, developing players or VFL jobbers tasks way beyond what they’re capable of, in a side that is good enough to not require them.” Absolutely. Lachie McNeil has a day out against an undermanned Hawthorn side in a one-sided practise match and he’s back in the team again. He had 6 Turnovers on the weekend. He shouldn’t be on our list, let alone in the seniors. He’s had plenty of opportunities and never cut it in the Ones. Why on earth wasn’t he subbed instead of Sanders?? Buku never looked like a desperate man. So chop him. If he doesn’t have desperation and physicality in his psyche, then we should never have recruited him – he looks like another Schache personality. And yet James O’Donnell is a great competitor with a lot to like about his form, but was made to play another game in the VFL – was Bevo experimenting with our team to give Buku a go? Treloar was very poor defensively – I reckon my dad could side-step him with his walking frame – and was unusually poor offensively. Rhiley West was terrific and is the benchmark for effort required, yet he’ll probably be the first one out of the team when he has a quiet game, because he wasn’t recruited to the club from the VFL or another club. Daniel showed his class when he came on. Who can comprehend Daniel being the sub and Macrae and O’Donnell being made to play another game in the Twos when McNeil, Buku, Bramble and Vandermeer are selected??? Too much is left to too few at Doggy Land and Bevo needs to make better selections and get our best players playing their best footy collectively.

Although the Tiges did have 5 picks inside the Top 30 a couple of years ago.

Footy Fix: The Tigers aren't any good... but you have to admire their Phar Lap-sized hearts

Great analysis Tim. Outstanding fighting effort by the Tiges with three men down.

Footy Fix: The Tigers aren't any good... but you have to admire their Phar Lap-sized hearts

I worked in stadiums when the domestic soccer scene was trying to gain traction in the media and the home team had control of what was published regarding ticket sales. They always fibbed to the media (heavily overstating crowd numbers). I wonder if GWS and the AFL is doing the same.

The AFL didn't need to rob the NRL's house with Opening Round - it's more than big enough already

Why isn’t the media calling-out how stupid and illogical the naming of rounds this year is a mis-count? Next weekend is the second round, but the AFL are calling it Round 1. Six teams are playing their second game, yet the AFL are calling it Round 1. And Round 3 is called Round 2, Round 4 is called Round 3. It’s so stupid. If they were so insistent on thinking it was a good idea to call the first week ‘Opening Round’, then fine, but call the next week Round 2 so that we don’t live in this perpetual lie all season. Honestly, what ‘bright spark’ in the AFL thought of this round naming? And why wasn’t someone in the Executive team smart enough to say, “hang-on, that’s a really dumb idea”? 😔

The AFL didn't need to rob the NRL's house with Opening Round - it's more than big enough already

Agree – we need better international pitch governance standards. India served up pitches that resulted in 2-3 day test matches last time Australia was there. England served-up roads when Australia was there. We need better standards established and enforced that still allow home side to deliver pitches suited to their bowling strengths (whether that be pace, swing or spin) and offer opportunity for both batters and bowlers, but not pitches that are too difficult to bat on due to unpredictable bounce and deviation that make it a lottery, or pitches that are too easy to bat on that force fielding sides to bowl bouncers non-stop like we saw in the last Ashes series. The ICC need to regulate this, because we clearly can’t rely on India and England to uphold moral standards. 😁

New Bazball, same England: Tourists throw away India advantage with classic Pommy collapse

The best individual batting performance in this Test was Root, who scored 122 not out in the 1st innings at a glacial strike-rate of 44.52. (Hardly “Bazball”.) Therein lies the lesson.
