Let”s hope the rain stays away

Let’s not. Like a true blue patriot should, I’ve put money on the draw…

I love a rain-drenched outfield,
at a ground with over-flowing drains,
Of sodden groundstaff workers,
No drought, just flooding rains.

BREAKING: Starc survives, Head edges Khawaja as Australian Ashes XI revealed

As for Richardson, yes he should be playing. Let’s hope he’s in line for the day-night Test in Adelaide.

Little to nil chance I’m afraid. Pink ball Tests are Starc’s specialty (and probably the main reason why JR didn’t get the T1 gig). The possibility that they might be as, or even *more*, productive for other bowlers never seems to get a mention. Just ask Chadd Sayers…

Formerly known as the Harmonie German Club. Its revenue stream dried to a trickle after the *very* nearby Gabba police station closed in (I think) the early 90’s. Didn’t matter what time of night it was, you’d always see a few blokes with hard eyes and cheap suits in there.

That none of your reasons for describing this Ashes as “…the most anticipated and talked-about series since…” includes ‘watching great players’ says it all.

'Most talked-about series in 15 years': My Ashes preview

Sorry qwetz I respect you as a poster but state bias is the lowest level of opinion on here.

Disagree Sarge. And I don’t understand how you can hold that *personal* opinion when State bias has such a direct effect on the teams’ performance *and* the individual players’ financial fortunes. There’s a vast difference between the income (current & future) of a Shield player versus that of a regular international.

Anyhoo, as I said to another poster, I’m more than happy to debate this, but this is not the forum to do it on.

Remind me who appoints the selectors.

BREAKING: Starc survives, Head edges Khawaja as Australian Ashes XI revealed

You’ve got to remember that this is the organisation that retained an opening bat after he totaled 95 runs from a 5 Test series. I wonder if there’s a link between this batter and Starc? Nope. Can’t think of one…

BREAKING: Starc survives, Head edges Khawaja as Australian Ashes XI revealed

Don’t be silly. You can’t select a non-NSW fast bowler for a Test where the conditions are likely to be helpful as it’s too dangerous. The interloper might do well, and then he’ll have to get another game…

BREAKING: Starc survives, Head edges Khawaja as Australian Ashes XI revealed

Well if a certain player can survive; throwing a punch at an opposition player in a pub, *repeated* drunken internet rants at journos, having a push’n’shove with opposition players during a game, ruining his countries reputation for not ball-tampering and being an all-round kn0b then you’d have to think JL has a reasonable pov.

Who’s going to pay?

Why inviting Bangladesh to the Sheffield Shield would improve international cricket

But as someone who quite openly plays favourites…

Oh come on! The only talking heads & journos I can think of who *don’t* play favourites would be the mighty AB and Brendon Julien. And BJ is only there because he never expresses an opinion on a player.

It's time to break our exhausting addiction to 'What Warnie Reckons'

there is no question he was the best cricketing mind in that side

Well there is actually. Warne’s only serious fc captaincy experience in Oz was one season when he did about half a season wearing the armband for the Vics. It was pretty much, Lose under SKW, win under Chuck, that season. (And iirc, SKW also copped a fine for umpire dissent in one of ‘his’ games).

I don’t know what Channel it was/is, but when they paired Warne with Skull & Isa I used to froth like a badly made cappuccino. “What’s the point of putting anyone with him?” I’d rant as SKW babbled on relentlessly over the top of that excellent pairing. “JUST SHUT UP WOULD YOU”. Oh, and any co-comm who Dorothy Dixed one to SKW about something from his playing days should be strapped to a chair like Alex in ‘Clockwork Orange’ and forced to listen to old Norman May calls until they desist from the practice. Regardless of how much Warnie pays them.

Come to think of it, while great Australians are thick under the ground, there aren’t many above it atm. The only one that lurches to my mind is Barry Humphries. *Just* missing out is Peter Dutton.

Of course, there’s also the possibility that there is a reasonable case to be made against selecting Starc. One could also suggest that Warne being anti-Starc is so noticeable because criticism of NSW players is so very rare.

It's time to break our exhausting addiction to 'What Warnie Reckons'

I’m in complete agreement. But with a catch. Let’s ban *all* ex-Test players who played above, sayyy, 20 Tests. One immediate benefit would be that ‘our’ media would have to cease gratingly referring to certain mediocrities as a “Test great”. In the longer term, barring people whose eye-hand coordination has somehow qualified them as commentators, would free spots for people who are far more likely to be entertaining, articulate, witty, informative, modest, worldly and unbiased than those who’ve spent their entire lives in the cricket bubble. Not much to ask is it?

SHOCK!
Over-rated ex-NSW fast bowler supports current over-rated NSW fast bowler! Who would have thought?

'Lock him in': Brett Lee's call on who should open the bowling with Hazlewood

You’re claiming Gilchrist – who had to leave NSW to get a decent chance, as an example of NSW bias?

Sure am!
The official CNSW/CA pecking order is;
1. Born, bred & playing for NSW
2. Born & bred elsewhere but playing for NSW
3. Born & bred in NSW, but playing elsewhere
4-6 Daylight
7-9 A bit more daylight
10. Others

Steve Smith over Mark Waugh? Pick your best catcher – runs are a bonus!

Errrr. MEW took money from a bookie for a ‘pitch report’.

Steve Smith over Mark Waugh? Pick your best catcher – runs are a bonus!

Nope. You’ll get mocked and criticised because your premises and methodology deserve it.

Comparing the Waughs against Zimbabwe

Indeedily. His fielding was like his batting, significantly under-rated. Has there ever been a more accurate throw from inside the ring? Not that I can think of. There must be a stat somewhere that shows how many times a fielder ran out batters? It’s certainly a false memory, but AB just never seemed to miss the stumps in ODIs. Bloody show-off.

Steve Smith over Mark Waugh? Pick your best catcher – runs are a bonus!

Well I hate to harp butttt, the only time it happens is when NSW has a stake to the best batsman/stopper. eg. Gilchrist, Haddin & Nevill.

On a higher level, I’m quietly confident that the stats kept by the States & CA would stats on missed chances. Something that’d be handy to shut biased commentators and fanbois up.

Aside: Remember how comms used to sagely pronounce that any ball from a finger spinner that went past the outside edge was an arm ball or a toppie? Along came SuperSlomo and suddenly those deliveries became “natural variation”. Top giggle that.

Steve Smith over Mark Waugh? Pick your best catcher – runs are a bonus!

“No, the old maxims are there for a reason: pick your second slip based on catching ability – and any runs they score are a bonus.” I’m not sure I’ve ever heard this old maxim before. I wonder where it came from?

Sydney. When MEW was playing…

Meanwhile, 80km north of Brisbane on the ‘Sunshine’ Coast, it’s absolutely pi55ing down.

Steve Smith over Mark Waugh? Pick your best catcher – runs are a bonus!

Waugh was the best slips fielder and Bob Simpson second.

Iyo. Imo, I couldn’t split MA Taylor, the Chappells & Punter. (Simpson was before my time)

Best ring/outfielders: Punter, HC Lloyd, Andrew Symonds.

Steve Smith over Mark Waugh? Pick your best catcher – runs are a bonus!

Yep, poor Ashton has missed a shedload of cricket lately, especially in LOIs. This is a trifle annoying to moi as imo, he’s a significantly better option than Zampa. Tying in with another thread, AA is a way better fielder and batter than Zampa, plus some stats I extracted from CI show that he has better key bowling stats than Zampa when both are playing. Odd how the full set of skills doesn’t seem to be taken into account consistently…

And btw, AA has a bit of competition for that LHO spot now. I’ve been impressed with Matt Kuhnemann for the Bulls. Aside from looking good technically, he’s got wickets on the board in the Shield this season. At just 25 he could be one to watch.
