My thoughts around the time that contract became common knowledge (after the GWS prelim loss) were that the pies needed to learn how to structure the mids around Grundy to take advantage of his hit out dominance, or let him walk.

The AFL media needs to change the narrative on Brodie Grundy

you’d probably have a great view of it from pitch level elevation.

VAR blunders produce yet another A-League comedy act

When they started talking about this deal I felt that the GWS prelim should have been looked at more closely. The pies midfield never looked to be able to really capitalise on Grundy at his best, with that match being the clearest demonstration of it. The pies had two real choices after that:
1. pay Grundy what he wants and build the midfield around him, in a way that can work to his strengths
2. let him go
The pies seemed to have failed to do either of those, and in the mean time other teams are working out how to play Grundy. Could well be an albatross.

Grundy is a seven-year albatross hanging around Collingwood’s neck

He took over half a team, which doesn’t help in terms of coherence, but which should have (but may not have) given him the opportunity to bring in the sort of players he wanted.

No strategy, no structure, no signs of improvement: Damning signs for Kurz's Melbourne Victory

This is just an opinion but I’d rate Dawes over White any day of the week. His form was a key part of the reason the pies went so well in 2011 – not just in terms of his goal kicking but also that he would draw defenders away from Cloke, who was often being triple-teamed. Never seemed the same after he injured his hand, unfortunately. I was also a huge fan of Leigh Brown and if I needed to throw another key player in there rather than just picking one tall forward, I’d have him over White too. He’s not really the sort of player who created a huge highlights reel, but was a player who seemed to really give a lot to the balance of the team, could pinch hit at either end, and did a good job of taking the heat off the younger and/or more skilful players.

The decade that was: Collingwood

He’s worth it as a player assessed on his own merit – his stats are phenomenal and his second effort and midfield work sets him apart from any other ruckman. He’s not worth it as part of the team – for all the domination he exerts in the ruck, the midfield can still struggle to turn this into dominating the game. The GWS prelim is one of many examples of this from 2019. The thing that Collingwood had to decide here is do they follow the logic that you don’t need a top class ruckman to win a flag and cut him loose, or do they pay him what he wants and work out how they can build the mid around him in a more effective way?

Are Collingwood paying overs to keep Brodie Grundy?

This was a solid article until Jesse White.

Poulsen is that good that 2 months into the season, he can’t get a start. That’s not what you need from your imports.

Why would anyone want to be an A-League coach?

If he’s on the park, he should be able to do his job. You bring injured players back from the bench because you don’t think they can run out 90 minutes – if Hoogland gets turned inside out so easily, he’s either a poor player, or his manager is playing him when he shouldn’t be.

Maybe someone could develop an augmented reality a-league experience…

Can the A-League persuade fans to look up from their phones?

I’m not sure it was a wasted season, but it possibly didn’t live up to the pre-season potential. Over the season, I think the pies would have placed fairly at 6th – the start was electric but after the bye they lost their mojo and wins over lower-placed teams possibly papered over the cracks a little.
The Beams trade seemed strange to me at the time, but the pies ended up missing him when he was out. For all the talk of that midfield being elite, and having the best ruck in the competition, there wasn’t enough inside grunt – Taylor Adams is the most valuable player in there. Hopefully Wills and Sier can start to add something as they develop.
I agree with the posters who have pointed out the lack of a true key forward – the pies game plan stacks up against certain teams but has been undone consistently by teams who play tall in defence and who have strong intercept markers.

Dazn is an online sports streaming service that I guess is similar to Kayo (only not owned by a cable/satelite broadcaster), or more closely, someone like BeIN Sports. They buy content and rights but AFAIK don’t create their own broadcasts. I think the J Leauge deal would be similar to a potential working model put forward earlier in this thread, where the league creates its own content and then licenses that to DAZN – which would almost certainly be more profitable than selling rights to a production company such as Fox Sports.

Football must find new revenue streams in more ways than one

Other codes being AFL – played at a professional level by 1 country, or NRL, played at a professional level by what… a dozen?

What is the state of play in football after another stagnant A-League season?

Was discussing this at the game on Weds – my own thoughts are that he’s not at the level where he can lock down his last few years in a top league, so is looking for a couple of decent contracts that let him see a bit of the world. Can’t really blame him there.

Confirmed: Honda to leave Victory after just one season

Depends how you measure it – Cahill had a bigger impact getting people in Australia interested in A-League as arguably Australia’s most famous player, but in Japan Honda is a legitimate superstar. When the Honda MVFC shirt was released in Japan, in was one of the most sought after shirts. Cahill has clearly not had an ongoing effect on City’s crowd numbers, it remains to be seen if any new (esp Japanese fans or followers) stick around next year.
