The ‘reach’ metric is nonsense and is purely counted for the benefit of dying FTA networks. it’s not an accurate measurement of ratings at all. Not saying AFL didn’t beat NRL….

The AFL didn't need to rob the NRL's house with Opening Round - it's more than big enough already

thanks for explaining my point.

Manu tells Roosters he's leaving for lucrative rugby deal - but club lock down replacement

he’s 27, not 32…. huge loss for the Roosters.

Thats not a revenue stream for the NRL though, that’s just breaking up the existing pie. Any new expansion team will receive that grant.

NRL coaches poll pushes rival expansion bid over PNG, overhaul of player transfer system and crackdown on agents

“1) NRL admission would automatically open up a significant revenue stream” from what exactly? I doubt Broadcasters want PNG, Do most households even have TV in PNG and if yes, are they paying a subscription fee to a sports channel?

“3) Attendance, merch, general interest wouldn’t be an issue”
General interest sure, but the other things cost money, a lot more money than the average Papua New Ginean can afford. They can’t just sell brand spanking new PNG jerseys for $5 a pop.

PNG seems like a pipedream to me. Too many logistical problems, will be relying on government money to survive which could be pulled at any time by a successive government. They will struggle to get anyone from Australia or NZ to go there and play. I know they have Justin Holbrook lined up as coach but what player would honestly choose to play for PNG NRL club? with the recent riots the RLPA will be strongly against a PNG side.

V’landys has done some good things for the sport but he is very, very short-sighted at times. He just wants the government handout.

people need to know that Australia can produce world class footballers. You guys keeps saying how massive and global football is (duh) but if Australia can’t produce players who can make it in the top Leagues then who cares about the domestic game? Its just feels like a bunch of sub-standard rejects running around, all the marketing and game day atmosphere in the world won’t matter much. I sincerely think the success of the A League is dependent on how well we are doing Internationally. Who are our big names in football right now? definitely no Cahill’s, Kewell’s or Viduka’s, not even any Jedinak or Rogic’s

The APL is doomed to fail until it starts focusing on football

the bubble AFL exists is in down south is just comical sometimes…

'Brazen shamelessness': Pies savaged as video showing new facilities exposes inconvenient truth

remember those days… The FFA and many of the soccer fanatics feel very entitled to success in terms of popularity at the domestic level. When they don’t get it, it’s the myopic media, government or publics fault – not poor administration and inability to accept some harsh realities about where football sits in the landscape.

A-Leagues confirm brutal staff purge as game's bold $40m vision goes up in smoke

thats true, I think some of the great 90s bands have stood the test of time though – Nirvana, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against the machine…. I don’t know if much music thats come out in the last 10 years will be remembered in another 10 years time…

Just like in rugby union, rugby league nostalgia is not what it used to be

as a 90s teenager, the bands WERE far better back then than they are now. Grunge, Alternative, Punk and Metal all had thriving scenes are were pushing the boundaries. Rock music of the past 15 years has just been a repackaging of superior older stuff.

Just like in rugby union, rugby league nostalgia is not what it used to be

I guess I have some nostalgia for the early 90s and the Raiders and Broncos of that era were electrifying but really, so much of it was individual brilliance against poorly organised defences. Raiders and Broncos seemed to have stockpile of talent back then.

I think the the late 90s to early 2000s was probably the most exciting and attractive era of the game. I watched the 2004 grand final recently and I have to say it was far better to watch than todays footy, very fast and skilful too.

Just like in rugby union, rugby league nostalgia is not what it used to be

surely Foran at 7 and Brimson 6.

Tannah Boyd to Tweed Seagulls

NRL Round 1 predicted teams: Gold Coast Titans - Hasler must pick between Jayden or AJ to turn fortunes around

maybe the bottom teams were terrible but the top teams of that era were much more skilful than they are today. I watched the 2004 grand final recently, just sensational skill and ball movement from both sides, not much wrestling either.

NRL Round 1 predicted teams: Wests Tigers - Signing Luai can't prevent their 2024 chances already looking painful

spine is a big worry. Strange and Savage are full of potential but will take time to become consistent players. Stuart just doesn’t have much patience for developing spine players either…. Woolford is unfortunately in the bottom rung of hookers in the NRL. Fogarty was great for us in 2023, our best player for mine, but he can’t do it all.

NRL Round 1 predicted teams: Canberra Raiders - Wooden spoon a genuine possibility as Ricky forced to look to youth

“brendan hands”, hope he can catch or his nickname will be “feet”

NRL Round 1 predicted teams: Parramatta Eels - Arthur's theme is stability but will it get ageing team back into finals?

I did, still don’t get the connection

Reaching a fractured US rugby league market will be difficult - even when the NRL actually targets the right code

what’s the Matilda’s popularity have to do with Rugby League?

Wighton isn’t a big loss, he was simply dreadful last season. He wasn’t much better in 2022 either…
As a Raiders fan I expect to see Kris or Rapana back to fullback and someone like Hudson Young or *gulp* Whitehead shifted to 5/8 after the first few rounds cause Stuart has so little creativity and patience. So yeah the spoon is very much a reality…

Pressure Points: If Ricky picked up his first wooden spoon, would his position at the Raiders be at risk?

yeah this is the big difference between the two sports in their respective countries. There is also the fact that some of those super league clubs are 120+ years old, even older if you include their Rugby Union beginnings. A League clubs are all under 20 years.

The A-League could learn a little from rugby league – but not in the way you think

AFL seems to be a “pass around the trophy” comp at the moment, although the NRL went through something similar in the 2000s…

haven’t the crusaders won more premierships than all other Super Rugby teams combined? shows how competitive that League is…

Panthers again…

hahaha must me miserable for you living in a world where all people who play and support NRL are evil, feeble minded thugs. You must have your windows boarded up…

Football will never get anywhere in Australia until it presents a united front
