I can’t see how Tate’s swinging arm was upgraded to a red; it was barely a penalty—a soft hit to the arm or midriff at worst. It wasn’t anywhere near the head.
The Reds continue to play to the standard of the opposition.

'Brain explosion': Wallaby stars sent off as Queensland left red-faced in Moana Pasifika shocker

Some takeaways after being at the game:
1. Noah needs to be the WB #10. He was cool under pressure and kicked very well.
2. Jordy P showed us both sides, brilliant runs, but then dropped the ball.
3. The Red’s front row of Peni & JTA was brilliant.
4. Lawson is a club footballer, and dropping HMP was a big mistake.
5. The ground announcer should stop screaming into the microphone every 30 seconds.

'It was brutal': Clutch Lolesio kicks Brumbies to 'Test match intensity' win over Reds as Wright shines again

This has always been my biggest issue with Thor leaving the Reds.
Surely RA given the money it had poured into the Rebels, and the money they must have stumped up to pay Thor’s wage, they had some sort of finger on the pulse of their financial state. If so, why were they allowed to splash vast amounts on getting Thor to jump ship?
It defies belief that they had zero knowledge.

'There's a responsibility': Waugh's message to Tupou as RA CEO rejects flight risk fears

It is only a matter of time now before the NZRU look at ways of making their teams more competitive internationally, and in their review, the first finding will be to re-structure Super Rugby Pacific.
It is the perfect time for Australia to reduce to three teams in SRP (Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney) and introduce a second-tier comp (2 x Brisbane, 2 x Sydney, Perth, Canberra, Melbourne) with women playing in double-headers every week.
As a region, we in danger of being left further behind.

So the Junior WBs are playing at 7 pm next Thursday, and at the exact same time, there is a Wallaroos v Black Ferns kicking off in Redcliffe. Gotta hand it to RA, they really know how to kill off Women’s rugby.

Under 20 Rugby World Championship guide - Junior Wallabies' first team named, game times, and how to watch live

The trouble with bringing in NRL players is that someone has to miss out. In 2003, Wendell Sailor was drafted into the Wallabies squad, and Joe Roff sat on the pine to accommodate him.
Seriously.
If RA is going to splash the cash, it should be on prop/# 10 development clinics, building better junior pathways, coach development and, most important for clubs, the Women’s game.

Eddie needs to be careful he doesn’t enter Wayne’s world of pain and turn Wallabies into Dolphins

At last count the Reds had more than 10 potential starters on the injured list (Tupou, Paisami, Flook, JOC, Mafi, Wright, Grealy, Henry, Asiata, Nasser, Nonngorr and Droasese).
I would argue that they have done quite well to stay competitive but they have suffered with competitiveness off the bench which is understandable given how tested their depth.
If this was the Waratahs or Brumbies, Roarers would be saying how well they are coping and what a great coach and culture they have.

REACTION: Hoops wants rival to 'miss some weeks' after 'brain fart' red card helps Tahs to stirring win

Actually there are plenty.
Ask Link what happens when you get NSW offside or ask Robbie Deans why after losing 8 matches in a row that 10 Tahs get picked in the starting XV or ponder why Hooper was the still the #7 and captain when he wasn’t even the best in that position while Pocock was around.
There are plenty of bullet shells on the grassy knoll if you look closely enough.

Geoff, the one constant in the scrum problems seems to be referee Damon Murphy, in the Reds v Brums in Canberra, there were 11 scrums and only 3 were completed. Admittedly there was a lot of the dark arts being used to negate Tupou. If as you say in the Star Wars battle last weekend, there were 13 scrums and only 3 completed, then does the problem lie in the scrum or the adjudication.

While on the subject of referees, it would appear that in NZ the breakdown is policed much differently to this side of the ditch. In NZ, players leaving their feet and having hands on the ground tends to be ignored. It will be interesting how sides react to differing interpretations in the crossover.

The Wrap: Chaos as scrum shambles puts timekeeper to sleep for 58 seconds

For a WBs coach trying to navigate the politics of selections is a bit like playing hopscotch in a minefield.
Deans and Cheika just picked Waratah players no matter what form they displayed and Link landed on a big mine planted by his own (by the way when will his book be written).
The point is it appears the WBs coach has a big say in who makes the team.
This raises the issue though of Australia’s so called High Performance Unit and what they actually do.
If there is a split in selection, is the HPU asked for its opinion or a statistical analysis?
After the HPU can hardly claim to be a raging success. We all remember Quade’s defensive frailties but what was done to correct it? Add in Nick Phipps’ pass, the high ball constantly bouncing of Kurtley’s head and don’t start on the scrum before Thor arrived.
Think back to the cast of young talent in this country who have arrived at SR level and shone but then faded into obscurity, Kyle Godwin, Lachie Turner, Josh Holmes to name a few.
Of course, not everyone is going to be a WB but everyone can improve.
Maybe it is time we had a closer look at the HPU and what its primary role really is.

Possibles outmuscle the probables and show that they deserve more respect ahead of Wallabies selection

So basically you are telling us that this is pretty much the same squad, apart from Ned Hanigan, that couldn’t win a game last year and that this year, because they have a new coach, everything is going to be much better?
There are still serious issues around their locks and back three.
I predict last again, but they might at least pinch a win somewhere this year.
After all, they have Ned Hanigan back.

Super Rugby Radar: Only way is up as Hooper and Coleman have Tahs fans frothing

Law 11.4 states ‘It is not an intentional knock-down if, in the act of trying to catch the ball, the player knocks on provided that there was a reasonable expectation that the player could gain possession.’
The debate should be about whether there was a reasonable expectation that the player could gain possession. From the video evidence, it would appear not.

ANALYSIS: Give the ref a propeller hat, thank Kurtley for the memories and fix this blight on the game

Wow Nick, you have probably highlighted the three things that Hooper did well in Japan, the rest of the time he was ordinary at best.
Hooper’s benching by Steve Hansen was probably the most embarrassing exclusion for a Wallaby since Nick Phipps was benched by his club team for the Shute Shield grand final.
The whole selection really boils down to how we want our 7 to perform, do we want a genuine fetcher or an attacking threat running in wider channels?
DR has made his choice for now and we punters will wait and see.

Coach’s Corner Issue 18: Come back number 7, your time is not yet up!

Agreed JC. One Stan commentator pined ‘the Waratahs are like the Reds two years ago.’
However there is one key difference the Reds had talent to develop. It is difficult to envision any of this Tahs squad improving much more.

Winless Waratahs keeping heads high

In fairness after the 2020 season, the Tahs have lost in order from 1-15: Robertson, Simmons, Staniforth, Hooper, Hanigan, Holloway, Short, Hunt, Clark, McCauley, McDonald, Tafa and Tuala and recruited no one.
They basically are an NRC team.

Is it time to reconsider dumping the National Rugby Championship?

My bad. Just checked it. Thanks all.

Western Force signing spree continues with Irish superstar

I’m fairly sure that Kyle Godwin has signed with the Waratahs for 2021.

Western Force signing spree continues with Irish superstar

Ever since Campbell Magnay arrived on the scene at the Reds, he has been touted as a player of the future. Well you can’t be player of the future for 5 years. It is time he started to deliver something…anything.
Also, maybe there was something in what Roarers were posting when they pointed out Tom Robertson was too small for SR. He was worked over last week and could slip into oblivion.

Super Rugby Round 3 teams: Petaia ruled out in injury blow for Reds

But if you cast your mind to the Deans era, the Tahs lost 8 in a row and somehow managed to get 10 players in the starting WBs team. Robbie Deans knew where his bread was buttered, it is a ‘wait and see’ approach with Rennie.
Unfortunately, like the Link incident, it is full of political intrigue.

"Mission critical? I guess it is": Penney admits Waratahs can't afford another loss

Morgan Turinui always talks about ‘a body of work’. So let’s look at what the Brumbies have really done.
I know this will sound like sour grapes but…
The Reds will look back at their trip to Canberra and see an opportunity missed. Largely due to some rookie errors and some very poor refereeing at the breakdown the Reds failed to finish the Brumbies off and consequently the Brumbies won a game they probably should have lost.
Then they played the Rebels, who let’s face it are woeful. It was amazing how much better they looked once Toomua and Hodge were off and Ryan Louwrens came on. Admittedly, their forwards improved but they are still a work in progress.
So an unbiased look at the Brumbies may show they have overachieved. This is what the Brumbies have done for the last few years though.
Consequently, they will probably win the Australian conference due to the other competing teams inadequacies.

Unbeaten Brumbies face litmus test

Perhaps Mr. Rennie has never heard of so called Australia’s high performance unit and its complete lack of ability to improve players deficiencies and bring up players to the required levels of fitness.
Whether it was a clearly unfit Will Skelton, who then went overseas and become a leaner, fitter and more potent force or the erratic nature of Nick Phipps pass under pressure or Quade Cooper’s ineffective tackling technique that wasn’t improved in 10 years of professional rugby.
The questions have to be asked:
What was the HPU doing in this time?
Who was overseeing it and was accountable for any failings?
What improvements or amendments have been made to ensure players have an opportunity to improve?

Rennie's Wallabies need success from Australia's Super Rugby teams

What has Powell ever done to warrant Wallaby selection?
He has a good pass but is rarely a running threat nor does he dominate a game from 9. He tends to be more of a distributor.
My feel is McDermott, White and Gordon are well in front of him.

When you move the world’s best 10 to 15 and then you have trouble getting the ball to him, you get what you deserve.
Mo’unga at 10 is not a great runner of the ball but he is an excellent passer, so England targeted the second receiver and stopped the ball getting to Barrett. One wonders what would have happened if Barrett was moved to 10 much earlier.
Morgan Turinui always told us that primarily Steve Hansen was a great selector, however he may not be remembered as such now.

Five talking points from England vs All Blacks

Exactly my point. No one ever really took an investigative approach to find out what really happened. Perhaps the rugby journos were too worried about being locked out and finding themselves out the circle.
I know it was five years ago but it would be interesting to end all the speculation.

Michael Cheika's failure at the World Cup is Rugby Australia's, too
