i would pick Neser as 3rd quick not a number 7 allrounder, not so keen on Carey at 6

Neser, we have a problem: Why Australia need to rush Mr Fix-It into Ashes squad

nice article, thanks . enjoyed the character assessment

Ashes Anniversaries: 6229 wickets at 8.33 - happy 150th to the 'finest bowler there ever was'

He always seems to do well when called on as bowler, and is a handy bat

Where to now for Australia after long hot summer with crucial 12 months on the horizon: 2022-23 Talking Points

Head,
Marsh,
Smith,
Labuschagne,
Green,
Carey,
Abbott,
Agar/ Ellis (depending on deck, with a preference for Agar),
Starc,
Cummins,
Zampa.
I dont see room for Warner, its not always about losing form/geting old, sometimes other players force their way in. Labuschagne hasn’t completely performed in ODI’s but i would have him ahead of Warner still . (and Smith Captain would be ideal)

Josh Inglis, off Starc, moving to his right in from of Smith (as Carey did in the Ashes) with the Indian keeper very shabby, its harder than it looks

India storm home despite Starc fire in opening ODI

dropped a catch too, Don (Gill on 2 or 3 I think) 1 more than Carey dropped in 3 tests I think .

Smith was terrific. His comments afterwards saying captaining in Australia is simple echoed my own thoughts and general fairly low regard for the skill of captaining , but I never really appreciated the skill and thought involved in marshalling the troops, field settings in the subcontinent. No slight on Cummins but I don’t think any other Australian would have come close to Smiths brilliant captaincy .

and about the best gully fieldsman I have ever seen

The real difference between the teams is the 3 Indian spinners are all-rounders. They can really bat. I’m guessing that’s why they are there. There are probably dozens of spinners in India as or nearly as good as these 3 so they can choose ones that can bat. Australia has only a few spinners of that quality so we can’t .You can quibble over Lyon’s bounce or Ashwin’s doosra , they are all excellent bowlers. Unfortunately our 3 can’t bat. Lyon is a reasonable 9 or 10, Murphy and Kuhnemann unfortunately seem complete bunnies. We are playing 3 short in the batting department. It needs an exceptional performance from 1 or 2 of our guys to win over there, with a bit of luck thrown in.

GOAT by name, GOAT by nature: Lyon's elite eight leaves Aussies 76 runs away from stunning win

Swepson was pretty good in Sri Lanka. It would have been interesting to see him.

I didn’t know about the May lbw, what a great thing DRS is.

As close as it gets: Wellington Test ends in one-run thriller as England earn unwanted slice of history

Agree with the sentiment of younger people liking the team, not sure if oldies are “struggling to cope with a changing world”, think its just the nature of getting old, sporting teams like music never arouse the passion of youth , even as they listen to Led Zeppelin 4 for the thousandth time it wont give the charge it once did. Go Pat Cummins et al!

On the nose: Are Australia’s male cricketers the nation’s most unappealing national team?

I didn’t listen to commentary but surely Cummins underbowled himself? He hit Ashwin at least once and numbers 7,8 and 9 no matter how good they are generally don’t like it short and quick. Hopefully saving himself for the second dig

Head's blitz may mean Warner's Test career over, Aussies fail DRS review, Delhi should lose host rights over smog - Talking Points

Carey is 32 not 31. Other basic mistakes?

Australian cricket needs a refresh before it goes off a cliff

my recollection is he and Labuschagne debuted in Queensland seconds around the same time and both were scoring hundred after hundred. Its a fine line at the top.

Neser in doubt: Star quick's epic batting cameo clinches nervy chase for stunning Heat upset

15th of January they applied according to tv news. unbelievable

Smith central to Aussie hopes in India but dire records of batting buddies against spin a major concern

i remember when he was playing for the redbacks checking to see if anyone with over 100 first-class wickets had a worse bowling average than Zampa (47.9) and the only one close to him i came up with was Brad Young left arm spin redback , 44.7 (also batting 28 with shield centuries so an allrounder). several lost years (among many) for the redbacks helping to turn Zampa into a white-ball bowler

Zampa’s India tour snub fair enough as selectors can't put white-ball form ahead of Sheffield Shield hard yards

still here bah humbugging old scrooge Jeff! not as simple as the straight one your man Inglis put down in the Prime ministers 11! (or that one against the redbacks!) Happy New Year and keep looking for the worst in people! (oh and please dont start trolling me again with your glass jaw)

FLEM'S VERDICT: Lyon starts new tradition for us tailenders as Carey helps Aussies show no mercy on Proteas

agree Boland slightly ahead of Neser as a bowler, however Neser’s first-class batting average of 25 is legitimate bowling all-rounder territory (Boland 12) . When Mennie was selected for his one test the selectors were (wrongly) criticised for saying if 2 bowlers were equal the better batter should get in. Difficult decision

Australian cricket's confusing quick selection policies

well that settles it then! the Jeff/Rellum (are you the same person?) seal of disapproval. I noticed Inglis dropped a regulation catch off Murphy in the prime ministers game. lucky he scored runs to make up for it. oh, hang on….

'No idea how good that is': Carey stands up to be counted as keeper's stunners seal huge win over Windies

Didn’t the “bowling group” volunteer a statement after someone, (Bancroft?I can’t remember for certain) implicated them (or others)? I am not sure but I think that’s how their statement came about)

Warner and his ‘mates’ have still not told the whole truth - perhaps they simply cannot handle it

i think phillipe is under-rated as a keeper, last year in shield he was taking diving catches the “best gloveman” types wouldnt have thought about catching .

'Un-Australian': Clarke tees off at 'nice' Aussies after meek World Cup exit, Watto calls for shock new skipper

close to 19,000 against afghanistan is a paltry crowd? pretty good i reckon

Is Australia falling out of love with cricket?

several of the innings were in the top order for WA and the ODI similarly in the top order playing as a batsman for Australia (averaging 5). good for him making runs for the Scorchers, perhaps he can’t make the step up to international level, perhaps he can and hasn’t shown it yet. as I said in the first post its not easy being on the cusp, but if you don’t grab your chance, it might not come back. nothing to say about 10 “failures” in a row?

'Un-Australian': Clarke tees off at 'nice' Aussies after meek World Cup exit, Watto calls for shock new skipper

“where do I think he played them”? exactly where he did play them. look it up yourself, I even told you where. tell me if I’m wrong (I’m not) 10 innings across ODI, T20, shield and Marsh cup. pretty representative, Finch and a few others have copped a lo of stick with better records than that.
