There isn’t a better second rower in the competition…. I think the fact he didn’t play most of the year is why the origin performance had plenty talking him up this year, he sat out for 9 months comes back and dominates his first NRL game back and then the following weeks does the same in Origin 2…… he has been that good for the best part of the last 4-5 years but probably didn’t receive the recognition, no doubt that he is the Sharks MVP.
He is also still only 28 although it seems like he has been playing for 20 years…so the best of wade is still to come.

The top 50 NRL players of 2019: 50-41

For someone who was on here defending and wanting to give a scumbag like De Belin a fair go earlier in the year… you are playing judge, jury and executioner pretty quick on this one.

If the reports are correct – should he have just stood by and watched Vunivalu get glassed?
I certainly don’t condone violence and agree they are a bit thick to go to somewhere like Bali in the first place…. but if the other bunch of D heads king hit his teammate and were then about to attack him with a bottle – you can’t really expect a mate to just stand around and watch.

Melbourne Storm star filmed in alleged Bali brawl

It’s all just an optical illusion TB 😂

You do realize the AFL have 18 teams and an extra game each week without having to play a Friday 6pm game?
The NRL don’t have to look for very far to see how it’s done…

Now on the talent pool – that’s a completely false and incorrect perception, people were claiming Mitchell Moses wasn’t first grade standard two years ago…. how times change with a bit of experience in the top grade…. guys like Papenhuyzen, Nikora, Xerri, Cody walker, Hamlin Uele, etc all just needed to be given a go – no question as to the standard once there…. look at how teams like Manly and Cronulla competed most of the year without their stars…the whole notion that there isn’t enough talent is mind boggling.

And if you think there isn’t enough talent in Australia and NZ (which there no doubt is)… look at all of the English imports who dominate from their very first season in the NRL (plenty more where that came from)…. Justin Olam was given a go by the storm and with the right development – did you see how he went? Huge pool in PNG ready to go…. likewise Maika Sivo and Radradra (they literally started playing RL a few years ago).

Shortage of talent is the biggest myth going around right now, and absolutely grinds my gears as you can see!

Dear Mr V'landys: here's how you can make the NRL even greater straight away

Good article Tim, great points and on board with everyone – looking forward to seeing the operations manager role being made vacant soon 😛
Couple more to add;
• bring in a Perth side ASAP, do it the same time as Brisbane II if not earlier
• Get rid of the Friday 6pm game
• influence funding or help fund upgrading the current suburban grounds to a better standard so they are fully seated (Penrith, Cronulla, Manly, Wollongong)
• be able to influence which personalities get to form part of broadcast team for games (of the networks are able to have a say in scheduling, it should work the other way too…. I.e. get rid of the dinosaurs)
• reduce the competition to 22 rounds and ensure no dilution to the NRL by having rep weekends stand alone and perhaps introduce a challenge cup to fill the void.
• keep the focus and investment on international footy as current, the Kangaroos are the pinnacle and are finally being treated as such – need to keep it that way.
• go back to one ref
The game is on a good spot, some key strategic decisions need to made on making expansion happen but aside from that it’s all fine tuning 👍

Dear Mr V'landys: here's how you can make the NRL even greater straight away

Well when it was the NSWRL, I suspect it probably wasn’t much of an organization compared to today…

Ben Cummins is a good man and a great referee – so lay off him!

Ahh ok, not so much the clubs themselves which is what I referring to.

Yeah wouldn’t be surprised about the fans…. just look at the NRL, some people don’t want the storm or warriors in the comp!!

Wolfpack win frosty promotion from Super League clubs

Not a bad idea.

I think the simplest form is they don’t go on the field unless there is a stoppage in play…. drinks during tries/conversions/penalties like it was for 100 years – and then of course, generally the game will stop when there is an injury which is clearly a valid reason for trainers to be on there.

I think automatic penalty as Matt has suggested below if they interfere at all…. if they aren’t interfering but just loafing around (30 seconds to get off after a conversion for example) – fine the club $10k, watch how quickly the trainers go back to staying on the sidelines.

One referee for sure

Yeah I think that’s fair scoose

Ben Cummins is a good man and a great referee – so lay off him!

What about when a ref calls knock on in the ruck and then changes it to a penalty based on opposition hands being all over the ball?

I’m not definitely not saying it’s the norm, nor do we want it to be…. but the ref simply corrected his ruling to the right call on this. Although it was an odd, confusing and unenviable situation for the game – at least he got the call right, which is what everyone screams for the referees to do.

Ben Cummins is a good man and a great referee – so lay off him!

That logic of the teams being customers of the referee is massively flawed…. without the referees there is no game and they are just as important to the product and the NRL from the basic supply and demand principles you are suggesting… no refs mean no product, simple as that.

Ben Cummins is a good man and a great referee – so lay off him!

Are you saying Toronto isn’t a city?
Because that’s the city they represent…

Wolfpack win frosty promotion from Super League clubs

Peter,
The refs change calls in just about every game…after they receive information from the pocket referee, touch judge or bunker…. literally in just about every single game.

Ben Cummins is a good man and a great referee – so lay off him!

The Wolfpack story is too good.
Salford somehow claiming the title this week would be one of the great underdog stories in sport.
Trainers only being allowed on the field when there are stoppages is a winner… the clubs can try their best to exploit it but there is no reason for the trainer to be on the field after 2 mins of free flowing play – get them off the field.

A weekend when things may have actually changed in a sport that usually goes in circles

Well done Tim, all class.

It didn’t cost the Raiders the game.
People may not like it but Cummins corrected what would’ve been a bigger mistake if he had let Canberra get 6 again…. sure Wighton may have kicked or passed, etc if he didn’t see the hand wave but did it cost them victory? No.
It just led to a turnover 90m from their tryline and they couldn’t shut out the superstar backline of the roosters who were getting ready to step up in that final 15.

The rules of trainers on the field needs to be enforced, they should only be allowed on the field during a stoppage – if McGuirk can’t enforce this, as you say, he should go.

Ben Cummins is a good man and a great referee – so lay off him!

Good to see you back Justin 👍

Ben Cummins is a good man and a great referee – so lay off him!

I think he has improved BD… the other factor is that the SL is much faster than the NRL due to less priority on winning the ruck and wrestle – and therefore the little guys get a much better chance to shine than the NRL…. hence you see the creative players or those that have speed & agility do so well over there.

And most of the English forwards come over to the NRL and are not only effective but are able to play 80mins immediately because of the slower pace.

Wolfpack win frosty promotion from Super League clubs

Sorry mate, I wasn’t having a dig…. genuinely wasn’t sure if you were across it – not knowing when the article was submitted 👍

Wolfpack win frosty promotion from Super League clubs

They gained approval prior to the million pound game…. I think Jimmy might not be up to speed on that progress.

They will officially be in the 2020 Super League – all systems are go 👍

Wolfpack win frosty promotion from Super League clubs

I think the original discontent or jealousy from the super league clubs has somewhat disappeared and they rationally see how big this is for the competition.
This isn’t just big for the Super League, this is massive for the sport. The Canadian media have paid it plenty of attention and if they continue to strengthen further while in the super league – they could take this to new heights.
Also there was plenty of positivity on social media too including from the SL clubs.
The 2020 Super League is drawing more excitement than the NRL is for next year – it would be even more mouth watering if Salford are to go into the season as reigning premiers!!

Wolfpack win frosty promotion from Super League clubs

Never claimed to always be right… not sure what Manly has to do with the above anyway…

Roosters go back-to-back at 2019 NRL Grand Final

Good reasoned comment Jimmmy, and it’s the same conclusion I reached on the game… the call was right, the process used is left it open to criticism.

Brendon,
Have you watched the replay? Not sure how you could possibly state anyone is assuming if you have…. it’s clear as day.

A rational review of Sunday’s refereeing dramas

Good one ROC, absolutely spot on as well 👍
The trainer issue is the one i have the biggest gripe with…. even in this one, the refs got it right but something needs to change.
No one wants a drink after 2 mins, absolutely no idea what the roosters bloke was doing on the field…Tim Gore’s campaign should be taking off after this – Nathan McGuirk needs to be held accountable and force change, start fining clubs or make players come to the sideline if they want a drink…. trainers should only ever be on the field during a pause in play.
