I could also have mentioned that Geelong suffer the same fate with “the Cattery” being overlooked whenever they have a home final, but decided to keep it parochial.
Also, I don’t know what the shortfall would be, but I’m sure that I wouldn’t be able to cover it. If you’ll permit me a more romanticised point of view, I think that although it makes no business sense, it should be justified as a reward to the fans and players. It may even make an impact on membership numbers, although that is merely a hypothesis.
I think what would make footy great, and this goes for all codes, is more games at suburban grounds, or the viable equivalent thereof. Look past the short term loss, and look at the less tangible gain, the gain that’s harder to quantify – fan utility.
