“We have this disturbing notion in our current politics that anyone who we disagree with needs to ridiculed and shut down.”
Or you know, every political engagement since the dawn of time. Also, it’s absolutely baffling that you can’t interpret that sign as racist or bigoted.
There is a place for politics in sport, but not for fascism

I think equating prizemoney with commercial success is a bad idea for a few reasons. One, it’s impossible to actually accurately gauge that. Two, it detracts from the sport – it’s supposed to be about who was the worthy winner, not who can drum up the most publicity. Three, the cards are so massively stacked against the women in this regard and it just makes the problem worse. Ie. There’s not as much initial interest > they get less money > they get less resources + becomes less viable > sport declines and then because the sport declines, they keep getting less and less prizemoney. We should be trying to prop it up if it’s not doing as well, not punishing them for it.
That said, the women should play 5 sets. They’re physically capable of doing it, they’ve done it before, and it’s much more entertaining. Stripping them of prizemoney doesn’t help anything though, just make them play 5 sets!
So I guess I’m with Joe, they should receive the same money regardless, but it would definitely be better if they played 5 sets.

Well. That was unexpected.

Good point Brissie Boy, I think with that explanation it shows he wasn’t being homophobic and I’d wind back my criticism a bit. The point I’m making throughout the whole article though, is that players and coaches can’t be clumsy with their words, especially when you’re talking about sensitive issues. And though Bennett it seems didn’t have sinister intentions, the fact that a lot of people interpreted it that way (Fox Sports ran an entire segment devoted titled ‘Is Wayne Bennett a homophobe’) means that he’s certainly made himself appear that way with his awkward comments. Hence the title.
Appreciate the input though, you raise a great point.
Sportspeople say the darndest things: The Broncos need to fire their media-trainers
Mate. I literally am just saying what he is saying – that he wouldn’t be fine with one of his players appearing on the Mardi Gras float. Didn’t take long at all to manufacture outrage. The only people sitting around trying to manufacture interpretations of it is anyone trying to argue that he doesn’t mean what he’s saying.

You’ve managed to make a massive sweeping, misleading generalisations whilst calling people out for doing the exact same thing. Oh dear.

Well, didn’t expect everyone to be so hypersensitive in the comments. This is good, Ben.

Really interesting Luke – the Suns aren’t a team I really take any interest in but have noticed their decline into mediocrity. Great to have some insight on how any why it happened.

Oh man, I disagree. I found them insufferable. Just as one eyed as the Aussie commentators and not a whole lot of insight. Not as bad as WWOS, maybe – but not much better.

I have literally never physically intimidated threatened a woman or screamed in their face. Have we all been in that situation many times? I hope not.
I’m sympathetic with the point about media hysteria but I don’t think the fact that he has apologised makes it all good again.
Dustin Martin innocent, mass media guilty
Also, the comparison between Goodes and Martin is weird and forced – one is being racially vilified, the other has admitted to at the very least, intimidating a woman. Sure they both deserve to be judged on their merits but I don’t think you can really put those two side by side. Maybe I’m missing something though?
Dustin Martin innocent, mass media guilty
Indecent is a lady at the beach showing too much skin in the 1940s – this seemed to be wildly disrespectful and hostile behaviour. Even though it wasn’t criminal, from all accounts it seemed his conduct fell well short of a professional sportsman or a considerate human being. I don’t think he can cry foul for character assassination given he himself admitted his behaviour was wrong.

For your NBA previews I think I questioned you for not rating the Bucks higher. I now retract said criticism. You were right Jay, you were right.
