I completely agree. As I wrote the other day, the Brisbane winter carnival is getting shorter and weaker each year. Just look at this year’s Stradbroke, won as it was by a very ordinary horse. Horses who may have come up from down south are now being put away for the early start to the spring in Syd and Mel.Very short sighted and harmful to the sport.

Thanks for your comment. It’s funny how certain horses remind you of others for whatever reason. Whenever I think of First ?Seal, who was terrific as you say, the horse that immediately comes to mind as being at about that level with perhaps a similar record is Hot Danish. Remember her?

Gee I was glad to see Miss Andretti in your list.It is easy to forget how good former champions really were. As I recall, she smashed a track record when she won inEngland. At times in her career, and esp at MV on a hard track, she would have stretched Black Caviar’s neck.

Great article Cameron. It’s funny how you found a few knocks against Osborne Bulls, but ended up tipping him. I feel a bit the same. The main problem with all the Newmarket runners and Trapeze Artist is that they have had a month between runs, which is never great in my view. Taking them out leaves you with Sunlight, Redzel and Pierata, and I don’t like any of them a whole lot. Redzel was awful last time, Sunlight has drawn a terrible barrier, and I just don’t think Pierata is up to this class at the distance. In the end, I think OB is the safest way to go, but I have always thought Shoals to be up to the best level. The trick for her is it mustn’t be too wet, and she needs to be let drop right out early. Her second up record is not good, however. Just don’t like Santa Ana Lane as a horse, and hope he doesn’t win. Good luck to all.

It wil be an interesting series, given Aust’s difficulties and India’s terrible road record. Don’t know about Harris, but I wish him luck. Mitch Marsh is not up to it, and why he is retained is beyond me. The same can be said for Handscomb, who has a terrible technique, which will always be found out by decent bowlers. It is very frustrating when selectors seem to get it wrong all the time. Oh, and what about Renshaw. How silly of me; he is from Queensland.

Don’t really want to knock Hartnell or Le Romain. aGreat horses of course but not getting any younger, and there just doesn’t seem to be that brigade of strong 4-y-o s banging down the door. As for today, and for what it’s worth, I really do have doubts about LR at the distance on a firm track. As ever, we shall see.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I don’t wish to knock Winx at all, but in the wake of a horse like her, it is easy to under estimate past champions. For those who did not see him, Mahogany was a remarkable and versatile horse. We were lucky enough up here in Brisbane to see him in action, which is becoming less and less of a likelihood. As for the Derby, I agree with those who say the 2,500 just doesn’t bring out the best in the early three-year-olds. What about the Preakness Stakes as a model?

Good call about Benbatl. I overlooked him a bit but he was very brave in defeat. There might be another race for himlater in the spring.

Azhar Ali showed himself to be one of the world’s best opening bats in the Aust summer a couple of years ago, and has hardly opened an innings since. Pakistan’s batting has been very brittle as a result. Until the selectors or coaches or whoever wake up, this may will continue.

I agree with most of the other comments. Banter is not the same as sledging, and it is the conflation of these terms that lies at the heart of the issue.
Australia leads the world in many areas. Sledging is certainly one of them, and we all know when it started. I would love to name a couple of overrated players and underrated sledgers, but as I say, we all know who they are. When players care more about winning than the health of the game, trouble ensues.
Is sledging a part of the game?
Cameron makes a strong case for Missrock, but I think this is a very deep race and her poor strike rate really bothers me. The two mares below her have equally strong credentials, but have superior strike rates. I agree that El Dorado Dreaming looks ready. I can’t see her starting anywhere near $7, as everybody seems to want to be tipping her.
