Nor did I believe Schwarzer should be in goal this World Cup. He only played a few games last season for Chelsea and was hardly spectacular. In fact, he made a couple of horrendous errors. His reflexes unfortunately aren’t quite what they used to be.

I didn’t dare watch the 6-0 drubbing against Brazil but I remember hearing Schwarzer wasn’t in his best form. Can anyone confirm this?

Mat Ryan will only get better for the Socceroos

Having not watched either game, this is what I suspected.

I hope Jordan get beaten comprehensively in the playoff, firstly because I would much prefer some more South American flavour at the World Cup than a bunch of diving wimps to be blunt. But, most importantly, it might prove to us (and hopefully some Socceroos, Holman and Brosque, for example) that the gulf between desert football and high class football is so large that you cannot hope to compete internationally by playing in the domestic leagues of these Middle Eastern nations.

Jordan's World Cup dream lives on

I was going to comment but this has pretty much summed up everything i was going to say. Well put mate.

Wollongong fails to impress in A-League expansion test

What a fantastic read. It is a heart-warming story. Thank you for enlightening me.

The power of football in Afghanistan

Yes definitely one of the worst articles I’ve written in a while. Perhaps the dip in performances since the 2007 world cup has been because all our best players have aged or retired. There are countless other, perhaps more integral, reasons for the failings of the Socceroos, however, the thought that playing in Asia has worsened the Socceroos is a complete joke. We moved into the AFC in the first place because we were sick of hammering pacific islands twenty to nil every game.

Are the Socceroos being weakened by Asian qualification?

You think we performed better in the 2010 world cup? You are an absolute joke and you should be ashamed to be Australian.

When people are getting this geed up over the choice of away kit, it’s clear that this is a long off-season….

Sky blue Melbourne Victory kit causes uproar

Yes everyone always dismisses the promoted teams and look what happens season after season. At the same time though, I really can’t see Palace staying up, nor Hull really. My guess is that Cardiff will surprise this season.

Sunderland 8th? Dear lord…

On another note, I always feel sorry for Di Canio’s suits and his wife as he seems to destroy them with grass stains every match. His wife must do a lot of washing.

Man to watch – Fernando Torres? Ease off the drugs man.

I just can’t see Arsenal finishing second. I imagine it would be incredibly frustrating to support them.

On another note, don’t be surprised if Man United top the league again

I think Langerak and Ryan will battle for the number 1 spot following Shwarzer’s retirement but not until Langerak finds regular game time. Personally I think he has the most potential of all our goalies although it’s hard to choose between him and Ryan. He can make some astonishing saves. He has amazing reflexes and I think Dortmund have won every single game in which he has played as goalie. But ultimately I think Ryan wins out because he appears to have guarenteed game time in Belgium (at least, for the time being). At the moment though I would put Galekovic at number 2. On another note, I’m not so sure about Federeci anymore but he’s still well and truly up there and in contention

1. Schwarzer
2. Galekovic
3. Ryan
4. Federeci
5. Langerak
6. Birighitti
7. Coe

Has Mark Schwarzer mortgaged his World Cup dream?

How are you meant to compare the A-League and J-League when the J-Leauge is in the middle of their season and our boys haven’t played in a couple of months???

The end of a good week for Australian football

Has he played for any Socceroos or Greek youth teams yet?

The end of a good week for Australian football

Good job man, I hate the negative media attention too. It is completely unwarranted. I am 17 too but I don’t necessarily want to be a sports journalist. I use the Roar to vent my anger on issues just like this!

Football is the talk of the town

Yes I would much prefer to see these big clubs play Australian teams we can connect with, not a mish-mash of All Stars. The FFA should organise these clubs to play the winner of the previous grand final, or perhaps the winner of the round robin version of the league (as you don’t really get any rewards for finish first on the table but not winning the finals series)

Liverpool, Victory create genuine football atmosphere at MCG

No surprise the All Stars were trying, they’ve barely touched a football in a couple of months! It’s hard for our boys to match the fitness of the United players.

I hate Manchester of course, as many do, but they’re one of the few “big teams” I really respect; firstly, because they have such a cult following. I wasn’t interested by the All Stars game but there is a lot of glamour and tradition about the club you have to admire. Secondly, they are one of the few teams to actually CULTIVATE SOME OF THEIR OWN TALENT! If you watched the game, you would have noticed Jesse Lingard, a bright prospect for sure who came through the United youth academy. Ryan Giggs has played for them his whole footballing career for chrissakes! They had that whole generation too where they produced Gary Neville, David Beckham, Phill Neville, Paul Scholes, to name a few. If you look at some of their young stars: Phil Jones was nabbed when he was only 19 and looks set to become a star. Danny Welbeck has come through the Man United academy. The list goes on forever

It's Manchester United versus ... everyone

In case you are illiterate and can’t read, I actually never said big European teams shouldn’t be playing friendlies in Australia so your point is invalid. I just think the All Star concept failed somewhat and I can’t see why these teams can’t just play an A-League team (the winner of the grand final in the previous year maybe?)

Can we ditch the A-League All Stars concept?

Yes I never expected the All Stars to win. I don’t really see the relevance of your evidence here but anyway as I pointed out in the article it is absurd to think that the A-League should be able to compete with teams like Man United. I just fear it confirms the belief of Euro snobs who know nothing about the A-League and think the A-League is pathetic.

Can we ditch the A-League All Stars concept?

Please feel free to read my article!

Moyes's United humbled in Japan

I heard it on an interview on either the Fox Sports site or SBS the world game. The comment about Berisha was clearly a joke…

Can we ditch the A-League All Stars concept?

Well said indeed. I was going to suggest in my article that the big European teams play off against the winner from last year, perhaps the winner on the table NOT the winner of the grand final as this will give some more credibility to teams which win the league but fail to win in the finals series. Either way, we get an Australian team that we can actually connect with

Can we ditch the A-League All Stars concept?

Yes agreed. Looking forward to the game. Victory have the experienced spine in celeski, coe, boxall, etc. and the young guns have been tested at the U-20 World Cup (Geria, Pain, etc.)

Can we ditch the A-League All Stars concept?

Yes I am sick of these Arab nations giving the round ball game a bad name with their diving antics. The standard would be the same if we segregated Asia into east and west and, arguably, the Socceroos might even play harder opposition. We will still the big teams of Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Japan that way, as well as nations like Thailand for whom the future looks very very bright indeed

Meanwhile, in East Asia, the Socceroos quest continues

Meanwhile, in East Asia, the Socceroos quest continues

Yes but 95% of the fans at the game probably don’t follow the A-League. The match was a chance to show them the quality of the A-League, which, arguably, the All Stats did or did not do, and to create a larger fan base. Regardless, I’m guessing a large proportion of the crowd would not have been aware of the difficulties facing the All Stars, I doubt they could even name one of the All Stars players, besides maybe Emerton
