Nothing to apologize for, Denam, not to anyone. You were spot on re Pucovski. Chappell’s past record as a selector ( and especially his batting) has zero to do with the current mess. He is past it.

Greg Chappell saw the writing on the wall, and hopefully the mess his panel has made this summer

Fine article, and especially well said about Pucovski. I believe the entire selection panel should be booted, because of the appalling way he was mishandled, given the nature of the health issues.

Excellent

Justin Langer should stand down as a national selector

I think it is all summed up, when Trevor Hohns states “you never admit to getting it wrong.” Wow.
Well, when that is the case, you simply keep on repeating the same mistakes, which is exactly what the selectors have been doing.
Besides which, there is a hefty dose of arrogance thrown in.
For good measure, it appears that the onus is also on players to….phone in….sort a chat line…to the selectors..for clarification on how to break into the test side. Really?
Hohns goes on to say that the selectors have had it “as tough as I has known ”. I cannot summon a comment for that one.
So the selectors don’t get it wrong, they feel no need for consistent communication from their side, and we need to feel sorry for them because it’s been really tough.
Indeed, talk about the Very Dark Ages.
Time to boot these guys, and bring in professionals to breathe fresh oxygen into the selection process and the guys who strive to wear the Baggy Green.

In the face of public anger, Australia's selectors finally back down

Magnificent article, and bringing forth a much needed grin or six.

Good news! We can stop calling for replacements, there's none there

The more I relook at Smith’s tearful face, the more it looks like the naughty boy who is very sorry he got caught.
With all that’s been said since that incident, the more it has become obvious that Smith is the very guy you do NOT want as captain.
Too weak to have a strong hand on the reigns of the team, and then happy to throw a mate under the bus to look better.
Like all of these decisions by Smith, he comes out looking worse.
May be if he had said….”I took the decision to have the ball tampered with, and gave the instruction.”
And then just shut his mouth from then on.
So if this was not the truth, at least he would have taken the fall for his mates, which is what a captain should do in those circumstances, because he knew about it, and it happened on his watch.
But no way.
You have a long way to go, Smith. Stick to batting.

I'm not calling Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft liars, but...

bbwhahahahahaha…..love this. Could well be the Coast Guard, except they would do a better job.

Another Test selection embarrassment after Australia's Melbourne meltdown

Exactly. Very well put.
I am convinced Smith was originally named captain, because he was seen as another malleable character in the Australian cricketing setup….easily influenced by others to continue the destructive culture.
And so he did, and has shown that he is still unable to distinguish a basic commonsense approach to the correct move or the wrong move, and all the implications.
All he had going, was the tag of the best batsman in the side. Period.
He is clearly not captaincy material, and Tim Paine clearly is.
Smith, you just focus on getting back into the side first, and forget about a leadership role. You have blown it several times.
And can we just have journalists write one article without mentioning, for the umpteenth time, the seriously boring fact that the Australians are struggling without Smith and Warner and their batting prowess?
We have got that for months now.

Tim Paine – oh captain, my captain!

Absolutely spot on. A great team man, and great opponent.

Pat Cummins puts teammates to shame with defiant half-century

Love this article.
Smack on target, but it won’t help, as the Marshettes outnumber the rational.

The top ten excuses for Mitch Marsh’s failures at Test level

Well said. A strong alternative skipper would leave Kohli free to cause mayhem with the opposition, without having to think too deeply about the team.

The precarious state of the Indian Test team

Judging by Smith’s ad with Vodafone, you have to wonder why there is any talk at all about captaincy.
Whoever is advising this guy may need to redo the homework, and Smith seems yet again, unable to grasp the full picture of the previous months…and the future. Is he his own man?
One has to think that maybe Smith was deemed fit to captain Australia in the first place, as he would be the guy to simply continue with the ingrained culture. Despite what he is saying, has the penny dropped?
Tim Paine is showing a balanced, steely pair of hands at the helm. No macho nonsense here. Long may it continue.

Smith refuses to contemplate captaincy on Australia return

That is just a great, smack on target piece of writing.
Exactly.

Ex-cricketers bitching and moaning shows ‘the Australian way’ is alive and well

“Get ready for a broken f……… arm…”………that’s a cowardly one from Clarke just for starters.
Then it ramps up a whole lot, when in Clarke’s mind, anyone who has not the talent ( like Clarke ), nor apparently the courage ( like Clarke ), and cannot make the international arena….is a coward.
I am not sure how lack of talent is then somehow linked to lack of courage….but then this sure is another cowardly statement from Clarke, and a mighty thick statement as well, as it makes no sense.
Talking about the courage factor….how come Clarke never played footy for Australia? I mean….was it lack of talent, or lack of courage, or both?
That’s where you have the real thing, not so? Brutal, direct physical confrontation the entire game…toe to toe with your immediate opponent and then his buddies. Try a sledge or three there, and see what happens.
Try to think before that mouth opens, Clarke.

Clarke didn’t rub the ball with sandpaper. But he’s played his part in a win-at-all-costs culture

Barry Richards……..what was not mentioned, was that playing for South Australia against W Australia in 1971, he scored 300 in one day, against a young Lillee and “mature” Graham McKenzie. Not too shabby.

The best Twenty20 first XI who never played

Cannot agree with you, Corne.
South Africa neither started the game, nor played the game, thinking to themselves……”Well, it’s ok to play badly, because if there will be foul play at the end of the game, and the ref will give us the penalty and we will win.”
I read dozens of articles which all say the same…that South Africa cannot blame the ref as they did not take the chances on offer.
Of course South Africa can blame the ref. At the end of a poor match where both sided played badly, South Africa were one point behind, and were denied a chance of winning, because of a shocking referee call.
Of course it matters that South Africa were shocking, but what matters more is that they should have won, but for the ref.
Must we all put this behind us, by simply saying it was ok for the ref to give that gutless call, because S Africa played badly, and therefore did not deserve to get the correct penalty decision?
That is exactly what many seem to be saying.
Ask yourself this.
If England had been leading by 30 points at that stage….would the ref have given the penalty against Farrell?
Or, if S Africa had been leading by one point at that stage, and made that tackle against England in front of the S African posts…would the ref have penalized S Africa? ( Twickenham would have gone berserk, screaming for blood )
Sorry, but it is too easy…it is YES, and YES….so you know Gardner fluffed it deliberately.
The Ref is to blame.

Taking the referee out of the equation

Yep…utter rubbish comment. Totally lacking in relevance and sense.

Were South Africa denied a crucial game-winning penalty opportunity?

As Matt Dawson pointed out yesterday…….if South Africa had made the same kind of tackle in front of their sticks, the Pom crowd would have gone absolutely crazy, baying for a penalty. And you can bet your last pound, Gardner would have given the penalty. So that is all one needs to know.
It was simply a gutless and blatantly incorrect decision. It is also doubtful whether any action against Gardner will be taken, and rugby, especially elite rugby, will continue to be blighted by referee bias, with millions watching.
Players get penalized, they get red cards, yellow cards, they have hearings….all well publicized….and these destructive refs keep on scooting away unpunished.

Were South Africa denied a crucial game-winning penalty opportunity?

Excellent article, and correct.

We shouldn’t see Smith or Warner back this summer

And when the Aussies get it back to them, they have proved time and again, they cannot take it.
In particular, McGrath, who would start to shake his head continually, and mutter away, to Warner, who had to punch in a pub, and start grappling off the field once again, in South Africa.
Shame.

Holding the unaccountable to account

First class piece of writing. Keep pounding the head of the snake.

Holding the unaccountable to account

Always amazed that Kearns played such a high level of rugby….when I have never heard him do anything else, other than whine.

Phil Kearns believes All Blacks get a 'free ride' from refs

Brilliant piece of writing.

This is why Test cricket is played

Spot on. The Boks simply could not believe they might give the All Blacks a hammering, at 30 to 13 up.
And Rassie Erasmus is as guilty as when he changed the Bok lineup for the third test against England.
He should never have done that, and his substitutions with a few minutes to go, made zero sense against the All Blacks at Loftus.
And he joked about it after the game.
Oh boy. Did he gift the test, or what?

The All Blacks' mentality sees them victorious

The South African commentators have been hopeless for years.
I am speaking of the English commentators.
The Afrikaans guys have always got it together, whether it be on radio, or TV.
The English commentators get lost in trying to express themselves in their own language, often mixing up well used metaphors.
There is to much UMMM and ERRRR.
They do not know the history of players and games well enough.
You have guys like Joel Stransky, who has the most irritating of nasal voices, and uses consistently, the most banal expressions…..HE IS A BIG UNIT…plus you just can hear that he believe he knows the game inside out, as he is a Springbok.
The enthusiasm, knowledge and emotions of the Afrikaans commentators ( ex Springboks aside, as they are so often not good, when asked for commentary )are streets ahead, as is the speed of diction.

Enough of the unprofessionalism in South Africa's commentary boxes
