Geelong managed its older team superbly in 2011 so that no player entered the grand final with more than 15 consecutive games.
This GF team is at its peak, but Houli, Edwards, Riewoldt, Rance, Cotchin will be 30-32 next year, and it’s likely that this combination will never be as good again. Richmond will need to manage the transition to younger players carefully.

Geelong and Richmond set the standard for excellence, precisely a decade apart

Maybe Richmond could’ve been given a ton of AFL assistance like Gold Coast and other clubs? Or maybe they could drag themselves up the ladder under their own steam with a bit of patience and smarts.

Why do Richmond bother?

Clearly the best-performed club of the past three years – eight wins ahead of the other top clubs which are in a cluster; best attack; second-best defence. Perhaps the Tigers will adopt Hawthorn-style trading to stay ahead, though they haven’t neglected the production line at the bottom of the list.
Collingwood adopted much of Richmond’s 2017 blueprint, but otherwise that flag was widely seen as a serendipitous quirk, perhaps encouraged by the club’s happy-go-lucky outward demeanour. There is more to be learned from the current pacesetters than at first met the eye.

Win flags, not trades: What Richmond's rivals need to learn before the 2019 AFL trade period

An honest article from a Carlton supporter. As rare as hen’s teeth. But oh so on-the-money.

Is the Carlton rebuild a miracle or a mirage?

Matildas exit reignites toxic coach debate

More to this than meets the eye. Collingwood is not so virtuous that it would willingly cut off an arm over a handful of inconsequential wagers.

Was Stephenson's punishment fair?

Ever been at a racetrack when a jockey returned to scale on a heavily-backed beaten favourite?
People go to the footy in the hope of celebrating a win for their team. Anything that gets in the way of that is a pain in the bum and likely to be met with disapproval. That’s how it was, is, and always should be.

Why I support the AFL's fan crackdown

Mention of Goodes was gratuitous, but the rest is spot on. The AFL have created a problem out of thin air.

Why I support the AFL's fan crackdown

I don’t agree that Ablett deserves to be booed, but I fully support your right to do so.

Why I support the AFL's fan crackdown

I’ve never been to a game where I didn’t hear swearing. Never.

There is certainly a limit to what should be tolerated, but you’re not going to stamp out swearing at the footy where people’s hopes are thwarted.

Make the AFL a safer place for everyone

“Fans, their roars, threats and even their violence have made the game what it is.”

– Jack Dyer

Make the AFL a safer place for everyone

Corporate-speak is so ingrained that he is simply incapable of saying anything that might impact the share price.

Gillon McLachlan's press conference was an abject failure in providing clarity to the fans

Pffft. In addition to its myriad existing problems, the AFL has managed to create this one out of thin air.

Gillon McLachlan's press conference was an abject failure in providing clarity to the fans

An honest report. Kudos.
Gil says the BAO’s need to go, but only yesterday the stadium manager (after meeting with Gil) said they would continue for the rest of the season.
It’ll soon be apparent who is responsible.

Gillon McLachlan's press conference was an abject failure in providing clarity to the fans

“What you say is offensive. But I’m a comedian; I’m funny or at least ‘edgy’.”

Fans and why I hate them

“Basket of deplorables” talk… it was a winner for Hilary and it’s sure to go down well with footy fans.
Crowds were at an eight-year high but the AFL has gone and shot itself in the foot.

Fans and why I hate them

Why the AFL is right to remove abusive spectators

Turn around and watch the game, mate.

Why the AFL is right to remove abusive spectators

Hi Gil.
The footy has always been something of a sanctuary from political correctness, with “rules” a little looser than more formal settings. Comments can be funny, crass, joyful or edgy; it’s all part of the theatre and you go home either happy or sad.
Real footy fans were here first and I respectfully suggest/request you go to the tennis instead.

Why the AFL is right to remove abusive spectators

PS Your article needs to be updated – the spectator did not say ‘poof’ (otherwise the AFL would’ve trumpeted it).

The umpire got spooked and as much as crackdown angst shouldn’t be directed at him, umpire Nicholls has painted a giant target on his (bald) head.

Why the AFL is right to remove abusive spectators

Kohli owns Smith mentally since 2017. By deigning to lend a hand, he was emphasising his superiority.

Why the AFL is right to remove abusive spectators

Everybody has a different idea of where the line is. It’s been more or less self-regulating for 150 years; if people don’t like their seats, they move. A cultural hardline isn’t required.

Why the AFL is right to remove abusive spectators

They’re always going to make errors and they’re always going to be abused. It just is, like the sun rising in the east.

Why the AFL is right to remove abusive spectators

They have simplified the rulebook and broadened the scope of the rules at the same time. Practically any call the umpire makes is considered within an acceptable margin of error.

Why the AFL is right to remove abusive spectators

For you (whoever you are – article unattributed) to defend the AFL over the crackdown is reprehensible. These are regular supporters being persecuted for sins as minor as “barracking too loud”.
Why don’t you try doing some research and you’ll discover it’s being driven by the same unholy influences that led Cricket Australia to call on community clubs to discard their older volunteers – whatever “older” means – and had the national women’s soccer coach sacked.
Never had a problem in 43 years but I am LOUD at games and expecting trouble because of it. I’ll only be thrown out once.
