Are Aussie sporting states dying off?
Comprehensive Article Sheek, wholistically impressed by the effort you must have put into this article.
in terms of regions/states if there were population booms here and there the name of New Holland for North Western Australia is the best naming suggested for this region, Capricornia for North Queensland and New England for Northern New South Wales.
Are Aussie sporting states dying off?
my point will never be put across whilst you people consider every suggestion from me to be offending your code, it is not, it was a comment on how they’re branding could be improved, using marketing materials and names from the local area would be much better suited to a code impeding its values and game on an area which is otherwise absent minded on the status of this code.
Back to Melbourne Rugby. Whilst it may not have the depth now, the point of its existence is to improve on this problem, whilst it may have a lack in this department in terms of players, support and sponsorship and demand for a rugby team havent and are not lacking. In any case, the administrators in Victorian Rugby and the people of Melbourne who are supportive of the code have embraced the naming, which is atleast, suitable to the manner which they refer to their city. This is opposed to those administrators calling the franchise “The greater melbourne and beyond that to the murray and then to some western boundary rebels” or the “the city founded by Batman rebels”, no they called it the Melbourne Rebels, and as far as I’m concerned, people in Melbourne refer to their city as Melbourne. I Travel to Penrith everyday for Uni and I can see Parramatta and Homebush from my house, we do not call it “Greater Western Sydney” or “GWS”
Why the GWS Giants will be a raging success
no I didn’t. read my posts, I never inferred that just because a footballer doesnt come from the area he can’t represent, however I did imply that using the proper cultural divides and words used in the areas in the naming of a franchise is.
Why the GWS Giants will be a raging success
already stated, its clear to see, they represent Western Australia and Perth.
I really don’t care for representations etc, I just think they should use the Nomenclauture of the City and area they’re trying to represent. Having a greater on the ground understanding of it all too would help them.
Why the GWS Giants will be a raging success
well since the teams in Sydney are doing the same thing, the GWS side is, all I’m saying is they should stop refferring to western sydney as Greater Western Sydney thats all, not insulting your game.
besides any allusions to that crap about people actually coming from areas they’re contracted to are null and void in the proffesional era.
Why the GWS Giants will be a raging success
I do believe that the Melbourne rugby bid has a greater understanding, considering many of its administrative recruits are from that area, it also helps that its a provincial franchise, so can be named for either the state or the capital of that state. Other than this they have an understanding that they arent going to be as big as the other codes down there.
no one in Western Sydney calls it “Greater Western Sydney” in all reality. yet they insist because it was probably in some dictionary of sydney’s regions. No one in all reality (other than north shorians) would say that Concord and Cabarita and The hills were in a Western Sydney catchment based on a socio economic basis. and no one would say setting up a stadium in Homebush would be reminiscent of taking a game “to” western sydney.
I’m not saying they’re bad or they’re going to fail or anything, it just pisses me off, as someone who lives in the middle and has experienced the extremes of both sides (so therefore has a clear understanding of the section off of these areas) that they insist on naming it, and proclaiming it, the way they are.
and I think this will hinder them on some accounts too.
Why the GWS Giants will be a raging success
They’ve already stated they’d like to be set up at cabarita or whatever the developments name is, in the inner west, ritzy place.
They’ve also stated they’re main recruitment bed will be from the hills, which, although geographically in the west for some (including the councils) they’re still considered to be a “northern” area based on the socio economic footprint.
Why the GWS Giants will be a raging success
don’t quite get what you’re saying. You seem to have no clue as to whats going on down there, or how many rugby supporters there are, or seemed to be just from the Dunlop Luncheon.
In any case, there arent two rugby codes, theres one, then theres some other ripoff.
Melbourne Rebels wet the bed in debut
The name they’re using in “greater western sydney” and where they’re living and playing still shows that those who are administering this new franchise have no idea about the Sydney psyche or geo-political and socio economic boundaries of the regions, as well as the general language used. names and nouns and the way they are used is one of the strongest ways to differentiate those that live in an area or are just imports.
good luck to them though, of course they will be successful, its being bankrolled by the smartest sporting body in oz.
Why the GWS Giants will be a raging success
Lacking in detail I think was the problem, particularly in the 3rd question you can see this, he basically states “we’re doing something” where as we want “we have put in place a deal with these people to do this, so that this can happen and people enjoy this atmosphere.”

meh, I just miss the arguments, the comments on the rugby front have been incredibly tame lately
Melbourne Rebels jolted from Super Rugby dream
RE code wars (I love you guys, I’ve missed these arguments lately)
One would suggest that in any sport their are going to be a number of incidents regarding ineptitude when it comes to proper social and legal conduct, however, when comparing AFL, NRL and Rugby one can only compare those incidents done by australians or in australia. Furthermore one would suggest, since so many of those incidents occured in countries where Rugby doesn’t seem to distinguish itself between classes, it would be hypocritical for someone to criticise the code for these incidents AND for being a “toffy upper class, private schoolers sport”. Choosing one direction would help in any of your battles.
Also National Social conscience may help in determining where these incidents are out of the ordinary, for instance, in the case of South Africa, one could generally infer that it is a problematic society reflecting itself in one of its most popular sports. Of course, this is the case with Australia and its sports too, however, when one sport has a below average count on such matters (say Rugby v AFL and NRL) one could assume that this sport has instilled a greater emphasis on punishing those who step out of line.
Melbourne Rebels jolted from Super Rugby dream
keep thinking that Jake.
brilliant post James.
Melbourne Rebels jolted from Super Rugby dream
well there was a rumour a certain fijian got kicked out of rugby for something like this. same with a certain tiwi who was kicked out of rugby for doing coke.
Media treating codes and public with disdain
They prefer the short term money over long term exposure. Unfortunately because of the people they tend to hire at the ARU they will always have one step at a time thinkers rather than worldly thinkers.
Media treating codes and public with disdain
um….Its quite easy to watch the AFL in Sydney, even with low ratings its broadcast…
….usually quite close to live time too…
you should maybe look into sports which don’t get wide media coverage…
Media treating codes and public with disdain
I’m extremely excited about it all, even as a tahs fan. You missed the best thing though, in the owner, Harold Mitchell, openly stating that he doesnt expect to gain a monetary profit from it at all really, and hes investment for other reasons, thats what you want in a private club owner.
Melbourne Rebels to lead rugby’s renaissance
Australia’s game, you’re dillusional if you think Australian Rules has the same ability to give people the same chances as Rugby.
and as myleftfoots comments point out, I am right.

Rugby Union: more players than ever in 2010

Expansion methods of the local football codes
never said that people within australia recognise it more, but a representative is someone who represents the country to an outsider. Which rugby clearly does.
