And another reason why their should be 2 NSW teams, or perhaps an ACT/ Southern NSW team
Matador Cup season review
True, but it does also ask the question of one rule for a head injury and a different rule for all other injuries.

Spot on Dougie, they’ve had too many players walk and Cochrone is right to make a stand. It’s a message to other clubs and the players too.
AFL trade rumours: Get ready for a big finish!
Perhaps you’ve already factored in the inevitable Aussie win in Auckland….
European rugby makes moves set to end Giteau's Law
Easily fixed, don’t tour.
Only play tests in Australia, in the south during summer and in the north in winter. It’d save a bundle in flights too as well as increased media deals with year round coverage.
Australia's Asian woes have to be stopped, but how?
Not so sure about the NT, but ACT should be, perhaps ACT and lower NSW as a team
The Sheffield Shield should be expanded to eight teams
Agree with you…they probably should have taken Zampa on tour too, if for nothing else then the experience.
Bird to fly back into Test line-up, with Holland's career in the baggy green over
Pretty much, I thought Hazlewood did alright too but was a bit underbowled, certainly in the second innings he bowled an opening 4 and then nothing for ages…not sure that Smith handled his bowlers as well as he could have done.

The batting was far worse than the bowling, and why is it that batsmen get patience and a ‘run’ with the same luxury not given to bowlers…It should be asked whether too much pressure was placed on him, bowling when we had no runs to play with and only when batsmen were set. And he didn’t get the preparation that the rest of the squad got either…. Given his level of experience, you could argue that Lyon’s performance was worse…too fast, too flat, wrong line, not tight enough.

Great article Ronan, only one point that I’m not sure that I agree on, and that is that the paceman would have been tired. For the match, Starc bowled 16 & 12, Hazlewood 15 & 9, Marsh, 9 & 4. Hazlewood and Marsh were if anything under bowled in the second innings, with Hazlewoods overs in particular being bowled too little, too late.
Lyon was very disappointing, pace length and accuracy were all well off the mark. Holland ordinary but was placed under too much pressure in his first test to play too big a role given his preparation.15 &10 overs, and being brought on when batsmen were already set.
The shot selection of the batsmen was appalling. In the first innings Smith going back and attempting to cut a straight ball that he should have come forward and defended was poor technique, and the rest followed. Too many fell to straight balls as you pointed out. The lack of sweeping is bewildering, and I would for a someone to ask Lehmann about that.
Unusually poor slips fielding didn’t help either and probably cost them up to 100 runs, a big amount in this game.
It’s really hard to fathom the Aussies batting given what a great cricket wicket it is, though that’s not to undermine the performance of the Sri Lankan spinners, all credit to them!
Sri Lanka's pitches are not the issue for Australia's Test batsmen
Hi Nick,
Great analysis and a really good read! I agree that Skelton is very much the good and the bad, butperhaps missed here is how disruptive he is of opposition rolling mauls, he seems to me to be a very good defender in this regard.
I think that Aussies didn’t make enough use of his ball carrying, as you say that is his real strength, perhaps as a result of seemed that Phipps took getting the ball out?
How did the Wallaby changes work out?
What do you call holding someone under water?
Eddie and Co. fantasise about murdering a woman on live radio
Criticise her writing and her views all you like, joking about drowning her justifies the mindset in many (men, funny how it’s only men who think this!) that physical violence against women is not a problem, it’s just a joke. Put yourself in the shoes of a woman who is enduring physical violence from their partner, the partner that likely guffaws at the boys club jokes of McGuire et al, and perpetuates in his mind that he is doing nothing wrong.
You miss the point entirely about minority or power based persecution
And Caro never pulls the victim card BTW

I think that the idea of leaving your team short of a man is what would make this a good thing, a further deterrent if you like.
Our game is too good for red cards
Deliberate acts of foul play, should invoke a send off rule. The player who commits the act should know that their act negatively impacts their team. A suspended player does not leave their team short, and so the penalty is not great. In grand finals, players go the King hit, not caring about the next season,, or in the case of Allister Lynch, knowing that he’ll not play again. It should not be for the accidental infringement, but only deliberate ones, eg a punch/ elbow to the head of reasonable severity (ie, not a soft jumper punch, etc). If unsure, incidents should be able to be reviewed at quarter/half time by a third official and the penalty applied from there

His work disrupting mauls is what impresses
Sekope Kepu will make the difference against England
It’d be better if he lifted the prop, rather than the other way around…
Sekope Kepu will make the difference against England
Top article.
I fear that it’ll go the way of soccer, and the only meaningful internationals will be around world cups…The IRB needs to stand up on this matter
Just how much will Australia miss Kurtley Beale?
I wonder just how did he become a rugby coach for the All BLacks? He was an AFL ruckman I think….
SPIRO: Why not appoint Mark Ella as the Wallabies' attack coach?
Not sure about the basis for the particular players chosen, but would love to see a Tassie team in the comp….the whole Hawthorn thing down there is only a stop gap measure that makes it more unlikely that they’ll get a team.
…and Tassie needs to unite on this too, cut out the north/ south rubbish and get a decent campaign going.
Which ten players would you pick for the hypothetical 'Tassie Devils'?
Because Skelton is but one player in the forward pack and can’t cover for the number of players lost or who have gotten older. With the amount of transition in the forwards, and the forwards coach, it’s not surprising that it’s taking time
BTW, I think Skelton’s only 23, is clearly much fitter than any previous season, and played pretty well last week.
Gibson and the Waratahs could be a perfect match, but it's too early to judge
Fair points all Bakkies, i had no idea about the insurance or power issues… the exchange rate issue is a complex one…like many countries i presume that they want to keep their currency down so that their manufacturing is competitive on the world market…that of course has a opposite impact on retaining rugby talent….or for that matter talent in any field of life. tough to resolve.
Brilliant Brumbies set the Super Rugby standard
The Shute shield shouldn’t be receiving grants, it is junior rugby development programs that should be getting more money. As a parents of a 7 yr old in his second year of both rugby and and AFL(in Sydney), the difference is remarkable. The resources that the AFL allocate is streets ahead and the membership half the cost….we’ve had at least 10 AFL players visit and train the kids, and not one Shute Shield player, let alone a super rugby or test player.
Then there is the schools program, or should I say what schools program…. The ARU just hand this off to private schools and leave it up to local clubs, stuff the public schools. Many of the suburban clubs of who are overly influenced by old boy attitudes who have no understanding of how to recruit kids to rugby. It is in age groups at under 8’s and under ( and therefore mostly still public schools) where it starts and most kids, yes, most kids, are blocked from playing by mothers for whom the image of rugby(and as a generalism, they don’t care if it’s league or union) as being violent. Then, for most kids, the sporting pathway is set. Most old rugby heads at suburban clubs don’t understand the role Mums play in a child participating in a particular sport. The AFL and soccer get this, rugby does not.
Brilliant Brumbies set the Super Rugby standard
I think what you say about SA rug by’s worst year is Spiro’s point, that the European drain of SA talent is increasingly impacting the depth and therefore quality of SA Super Rugby. There’s no doubt that there’s enought talent to field 5 and perhaps 6 strong Super rugby sides, just not so when so many are playing in Europe
Brilliant Brumbies set the Super Rugby standard
His FC numbers and when he’s scored runs have been good. I m not totally a fan, but I think that his test potential is coloured by his short form endeavours
