My gut thinks the same Brett. I somehow don’t see a broader national approach as that likely in oz as the teams play quite different styles apart from the kick for corner trend. Would seem more likely in nz. Will be interesting to see how it effects the internationals, I suspect not much, at least in any obvious way.
What impact could Super Rugby teams ignoring points have in a RWC year?
Interesting figures Brett. I had noticed the nz teams had started going for the corner more often over the past few years. I suspect maybe it’s a general directive from the heads of the union saying that they’d prefer a tendency to kicking for the corner unless it’s a sitter or games in the balance type situation. This allows more live practice of attacking which involves the whole team rather than kicking which is 1 player while the rest have a breather.
The helter skelter playing style is I think, a test for players to play right at their limit. Ofcourse there are mistakes but in my limited experience in sport I learnt the fastest when riding at the limit of my ability. If you always play/ride within your ability you’ll improve, but not as fast.
I think they see super rugby as a way to expose new talent and to test out what it can do by really pushing their limits. Once the international season comes round I doubt they will play such risky rugby Ofcourse winning is important as it’s a pro comp, but nzs results have allowed them to push the boundaries a bit.
Not sure about the oz teams as it would seem unlikely that there might be a similar directive from above.

All good Ralph I’ve enjoyed our little exchange and though maybe we don’t see things quite the same its good to talk with people with differing opinions. As we’ve both said it’s a complex issue and worth while discussing…. from what you write below it seems that our interpretations of what “white privilege” means differ a bit as well (which doesn’t help).
” That is why I support equality of opportunity but not equality of outcome” agree there and probably if we have equality of opportunity then the outcomes will take care of themselves eventually.
Maybe next time we’ll talk about rugby… stranger things have happened.

true numpty but lets keep things in perspective, it was the canes scrum….
Super Rugby team of the week: Round 12
But yes an interesting study and I’m quite aware of this as I have a young boy who I have often had fairly one sided conversations with, but try to keep it up because I know it’s important. We also have no tv. I think he’s getting a good mix of the upbringing his mother and I had. Sometimes it’s hard to imagine why other parents plonk their kids in front of the tv or feed them junk if they want the best for them. I think most parents do want the best for their kids but we’re all coming from different places I suppose and some probably look at us and think that poor boy they won’t let him have an ice cream or whatever. Breeding up the next generation of the “PC brigade” god help us all

Don’t need a study from America to hear that Ralph my dad reminds me on a semi regular basis, he was a teacher so maybe saw this first hand. I think you’re missing my point, I’m not suggesting its about genetics. As your study seems to suggest it’s an environment thing. Your environment is largely a result of your history. That was my point. History.

Teasing out my argument eh? Ok ok. Well I’m not going to say much new I’m afraid. Yes what I am implying is that if a society was truly equal then the crime statistics should more or less match the population, unless you think some are predisposed to crime, which I don’t. I’m not blaming skin colour for anything, I’m just calling it as I see it. As I said individual examples don’t really show the true story as it is on the societal level that this really exists. Having said that I think the story you tell gives a good insight. You’re right he’s not a victim of his skin colour he’s a victim of his father, his history. Scale that up to where I think the conversation belongs, on a societal level, and if a certain group of people don’t get royally screwed over then perhaps they could have “paid more attention at school” their children are your friend, that stuff gets passed down through generations and sure some break out of it, but it’s called a vicious cycle for a reason. I’m only speaking about what I see in my own country. I don’t know how to solve the problem or to relevel the field but to recognize and acknowledge history would seem a good place to start

For what it’s worth, one point that seems to demonstrate that it isn’t a level playing field. In my home country Pakeha make up 70% percent of the population while maori people around 15%. In prisons you’ll find 30% pakeha and 50% maori. if we are all starting on an even playing field why is there such a massive discrepancy. These are just approx stats from my country but you might see a trend in other similar nations. It is obviously a complicated subject and this is just one point. I would also suggest that looking at each individual case on its merits is going to stop you seeing over all trends in society which is what it’s about really. Really you need to look at groups within one shared society. In any case it at least doesn’t seem to be a problem in rugby

Fair enough, easy to loose context when a thread gets a bit long. Can’t say I liked gloria’s original comment either, but you have to admit your comment was a ripe piece of bait for someone like me. Haha. In any case as far as rugby goes I think you’re right.

Agree that the roar can do without another worm hole. Was just responding to Ralph’s blanket statement. Rugby seems to be an example which is totally free of this and should be held up as an example

Agree there nvfs best crowd by far while being bottom of the table. Imagine if they started winning half their games which isn’t too much of a stretch from where they are now as there have been a few close calls. As for them getting shafted by the refs….. it appears that way to me but i’m usually supporting them so that sort of blurs my judgement.

Hi Ralph me again, you seem to have a knack for saying things I can’t quite ignore. I’d describe myself as white middle class male. I don’t find it hard to imagine that my life in many ways has been easier than other peoples because of that.

Smith’s staking his claim on the 9 Jersey last few games. Until then tj had been better, hopefully they keep pushing each other all season. Weber has looked the best of the rest for me, or hall.

I think aumua will have to have a massive season from here on to make the WC squad. Harris and Coltman will be battling for 3rd spot if Coles can regain his spot. Hooker isn’t a position for a raw bolter. I’m a big fan though and also keen to see fidow get a bit of game time this season as well

As far as I can tell of the kiwi teams only the blues are better than last year. Aussie maybe reds better by a little, tahs also but in the opposite direction, others same same.. moon dogs certainly more competitive. Jags seem to be doing a bit better. From what I read parker is considering a move back to the Highlanders. I enjoyed watching the sharks nearly win. I think the ref in this game and possibly the canes rebs was a bit hesitant to get the cards out because a lot of the penalties were round the scrum and maybe they weren’t 100% sure that there wasn’t trickery going on. Also I think when the penalty count was about 10-1 barrett questioned the fairness of the game…. I would be reluctant to put in some sort of ratio of penalties to cards. Rugby is a complex game which is open to interpretation so I think itd take away the ability of the ref to deal with the game based on “the vibe” severity, cynical, etc. I know the refs don’t always get it right and some folks would rather a more black and white interpretation, but I like grey.
Have seen Reece put in a few kicks in behind and regather to score, but yes a terrible shank on Friday, one that I applauded.
Nine talking points from Super Rugby Round 12
I agree it would be best if this just quietly went away….. but we all know that’s not ever going to happen so hang on for the ride.
Folau knocks back RA's $1 million settlement offer: reports
Those are some interesting quotes from einstein Ralph. I wonder if he subscribed to any particular religion or was it just a very firm belief in some sort of greater force/being. I’ve no doubt people of faith are present in every field of study, and no doubt that many are very smart people.
Israel Folau should be given a chance to defend his views
to add to mr oaf’s points newtown also died long before darwin and his theory. Godel argued “If the world is rationally constructed and has meaning, then there must be such a thing” (as an afterlife), fair enough. Do leading physicists consider the world to be rationally constructed and to have meaning?

Evident in the to and fro above – for those that believe, no proof is required. For those that do not believe some proof is required.

Talk with police, you’ll find that eye witnesses are fairly unreliable. I do want answers and I’ve found some, elsewhere.

You’re right glen, many mockers and critics on this site would have been fired by RA for their sometimes less than friendly replies……..if any of them were employed by RA and posting under their real names with thousands of people following what they say. I’d say there have been many things said that were maybe more offensive possibly than what issy said, but you haven’t heard spiro weigh in and tell someone where to go. Brett’s not been on here saying all christians are nutters. Geoff P hasn’t voiced a distaste for people with long hair. Nic B has not stated gays are tactically inferior. Because they’d probably get fired. (Also they probably don’t think those things)
P.S. credit to the roar and crowd that its been as respectful as it has been, sure it’s not perfect but man I’ve seen worse

Yup they kinda hand their hand forced to do or say something. I’d say all and all it’s gone pretty badly, still not to hard to imagine it going just as bad had they gone another way. Simply put, IF’s put them in a situation where they had to react even though there was no chance of a positive outcome. That’s a bummer.

An enraged mob is never good at deciding anything, a sensible decision shouldn’t be too hard to make, youd think, hopefully not by a mob though. If there is no clause in his contract then AR are out of luck. My argument isn’t shot down because I’m not arguing that he should or shouldn’t be fired, all I did was outline what the situation is and suggest that what has followed isn’t that surprising. Also we don’t live in a wonderfully tolerant society, but we have moved toward that slowly over a long time, hopefully this continues.

Yup fidow was a standoit for Wellington last year. Shame he hasn’t had a chance this year but perhaps another year at m10 cup level is best… Lomax has taken a few super seasons to get to where he is now, things progress at a different rate in the front row
