That’s all true enough, but it does little to explain all of their kicking while on the front foot. As I point out above, there were several separate instances in the last game where a Wallaby player made a clean break and then kicked possession away instead of passing or recycling. These players have a kicking fetish, plain and simple.
Dumb Wallabies must learn to listen
This was a fun read. I don’t know what to make of Deans anymore. He did well with a very talented roster at Canterbury. Hasn’t done all that well with less talent to choose from. But I think the players deserve a bigger slice of the blame.
Deans is the right man at the wrong time
Not so fast Roger. The Wallabies are just in a poor cycle. They aren’t going to be this poor forever.
Wallabies no hope to halt Bledis-woe
To be fair, I was watching at the ground, so I haven’t seen the game on TV. But from the stands, we all noticed McCaw’s contribution. A couple of barnstorming runs in particular. Pocock could have been off the field for all we knew.
Wallabies no hope to halt Bledis-woe
There would certainly be massive pressure on the players and coaches all of a sudden. Any loss is unacceptable, let alone one at Eden Park. But I’m not sure that would have any lasting effect. By the time the decider at Suncorp came around, the ABs would have had quite a few games against the Pumas and Boks to regain form and confidence.
Wallabies no hope to halt Bledis-woe
Playing against Australia is definitely in the best interests of NZ Rugby. The ABs need to play high quality opposition to stay sharp. It would probably benefit rugby in general to have more games between the two tiers, but it would also hurt the game to get rid of showpiece matches.
Wallabies no hope to halt Bledis-woe
Thanks Harry. I think you’re right, Australia has really benefited from its rivalry with the ABs.
Wallabies no hope to halt Bledis-woe
Make no mistake, I realise I’m sticking my neck out somewhat here! It is usually dangerous to write off the Wallabies. ’09 was a horrible year, and it stands in complete isolation over the last decade.
Wallabies no hope to halt Bledis-woe
Thanks. Even as an All Blacks fan, I want strong opposition from Australia. Need some good hit outs to keep us sharp.
Wallabies no hope to halt Bledis-woe
Ta. I think those narrow wins have papered over some cracks at times. On several occasions the Wallabies have edged out a victory, started getting cocky and then had their backsides handed to them in the next outing.
Wallabies no hope to halt Bledis-woe
Maybe they should bring back Waltzing Matilda for every game. That used to REALLY intimidate us kiwis. *cough*
Wallabies no hope to halt Bledis-woe
Thanks sheek. You’re absolutely right Tissot Time, consistency IS an obvious prerequisite. Hence my point that even if the Wallabies do pull off a miracle in Auckland, they are unlikely to go back-to-back in Brisbane.
Wallabies no hope to halt Bledis-woe
The manner in which they won that Eden Park test was pretty miraculous. Brilliant try at the death.
Wallabies no hope to halt Bledis-woe
THIS. I was at the game, and as an ABs supporter I was tearing my hair out even when he blew penalties our way. You know a ref is over-penalising when you abuse him for giving your own team penalties.
Northern referees should be banned from southern rugby
Hughes has an obvious flaw in his technique and international bowlers are good enough to exploit it. Fix that and then he absolutely has the talent to succeed at test level.
Why Australia needs Khawaja and Hughes
Absolutely. Incredible. Bloody nuts, but incredible.
Usain Bolt sets a new Olympic benchmark
Goodness knows why they were making claims like that. Steffo’s big head must be infectious.
Usain Bolt sets a new Olympic benchmark
NZ doesn’t really have any great refs right now. Most of those northern blokes should do a fine job, as long as someone tells them to put the whistle away.
Why no Kiwi refs in the Rugby Championship?
I’d have France higher than that, especially given their superb performance in the pool thus far.
Who is going to top the overall tally at the Olympics?
Astute analysis.
