Quite true Peter. For the record I’ve actually supported the Magpies since I was a kid. The first year I went for them they won the Wooden Spoon (1999). If I’m perfectly honest though, my patience is wearing quite thin under Buckley, plus I’ve lived in New South Wales nearly all my life. They’re always going to be a very interesting club to talk about though.

I think he still did reasonably well in his first season as coach because he inherited a very good team from Malthouse. They should have stayed as a top four team for a few more years with the kind of talent that was around.

Malthouse actually got them to four Grand Finals (02,03,10,11), which is an incredible effort.
As for Buckley not being liked by the players. Well part of coaching is about tactics, structures, technical ability etc. The other major part of coaching is man management. Do you communicate with them well? Are they on board with your vision for the team?

Malthouse was the best thing that came to Collingwood in years. He took a very ordinary side and brought them to Grand Finals in 2002 and 2003, then was able to build the team again to have a golden run in 2010 and 2011. It was a shame to see him leave and finish his career with a very average list at Carlton. Buckley has at no point justified replacing Malthouse.

Good points here Dean. I’ve observed recently in a few different sports that the superstars of the game hardly ever seem to make the best coaches. In recent years in the AFL, Buckley, Michael Voss, and James Hird have all been failed experiments. The only one that has worked is Leigh Matthews with the Brisbane Lions. Does a coach like Buckley really understand a player when he comes to him saying he’s struggling with a certain aspect of the game plan, when to Buckley it probably all came quite easily.

Shaw is still averaging three a game this season for the Giants. Lumumba is only averaging one per game though. I think that’s because the Demons are playing him more as a key position defender at Centre Half Back.

I think you’re quite right their Dan. I briefly mentioned that the Demons were much better when the ball hit the ground They regularly cut the Pies up with a few quick handballs, then would often get it wide to a running player. Meanwhile Collingwood seemed to focus in on the ball carrier and found themselves constantly chasing.

I wanted to use the Brownlow as a loose guide to pick this team. Dangerfield had a solid season, but I’m really not sure which midfielder he would replace in this team. It’s interesting to note he didn’t even make the squad of forty. Many experts before the Brownlow thought Sloane would be the highest ranked Crow for the night.

Good article, Michael. I think a club’s sustained success actually has more to do with creating a competitive and winning culture, rather than having a good playing group come through. It’s the reason why Hawthorn have won 11 premierships in the last 50 years and Manly have made something like 39 finals series in the last 46 years. Having the right culture attracts quality players but it also lifts the standard across the team, so average players become good players.

Come on, Daniel. How could you claim to be a Swans fan and repeatedly call their home ground the SFS? ANZ holds closer to 85,000 as well. They were able to beat Hawthorn at ANZ back in May so they really shouldn’t read into it too much.

Lyon still needs to be the first choice spinner and should be backed up by Maxwell and the occasional overs from Smith, Clarke and Warner.
Solid article, but as a Left Arm Orthodox spinner like O’Keefe I always get annoyed when people call us left arm offies. We spin the ball from leg to off. A left arm offie is really a Left Arm Chinaman bowler like Brad Hogg. Calling them finger spinners or wrist spinners might be safer. Sorry if that’s a bit picky.

It sometimes works the other way when you’re watching the nightly news or something like the Today Show. They throw to the sport guy to talk about some sporting event that happens to be on at 4:00am our time. The other hosts often then have to reply with awkward comments like, “gosh, can’t wait to stay up and watch that one” or “what a thriller that will be, a must watch event.” Everyone knows there’s not a chance that host will be watching.

I think we’re merely scratching the surface here to a whole list of NBL marketing problems. From personal experience their media department seems fairly disorganised compared to some of the other big codes. There’s a lot to learn from the Wildcats.

Good point Prince, I hadn’t thought about that. It seems to be a slightly immature reason to not support a club but I’ve heard stranger reasons. They could easily go with a non-AFL related name. Victoria is known as the garden state. Could Melbourne Gardens work? I know it possibly sounds a bit wussy but it has a nice Madison Square Garden/ New York Knicks vibe to it.

Yep, love the Collingwood analogy. Melbourne sport thrives on rivalries. Tigers v Dragons (or whoever else might come in) would be a great spectacle. The Basketball interest is certainly there in Victoria and this is shown by the regular success of their junior sides. They’re definitely not harnessing the interest to its full potential.

I think it’s important to remember that every club is always going to have a select group of supporters who are going to behave poorly from time to time. The key to having a quality crowd is the club has to set a good club culture and demonstrate what they want from their fans. This not only applies to AFL clubs but any local club who might carry a poor reputation (we all know a few of these). Essendon and Footscray should be applauded for their responsible and decisive action. They’ve set a good standard in regards to racism which hopefully their fans and other clubs can follow.

If Jackson Bird is fit he has to get into the Test side ahead of just about anyone. He’s a far better bowler than Mitchell Starc will ever be. If Starc starts getting anywhere close to Bird’s and Pattinson’s first class records then I might start thinking otherwise. There’s an old saying, “Potential is worth a cup of tea.”

I think you’re quite right there MJ. I don’t think there’s ever been a player who has captained a club, then gone on to coach the same club to a premiership. I wonder if Leigh Matthews would have been a flop if he was appointed to coach Hawthorn.
