It’s sci-fi. Hari Seldon had the art of predicting social future down to a precise science. Predicted the demise of the current empire. Some parallels, I see, with the AB’s empire.
One of the best sci-fi ever written imho, and I don’t say that lightly. There’s talk of a TV series.
Did the All Blacks pick the right successor to Hansen?
Great read Nick
Was often thinking of the Hari Seldon character from Asimov’s “Foundation” series whilst reading this.

Any future club would rightly be reticent in hiring him. Even if you think he what he said wasn’t worth the kerfuffle, you’d still take pause before hiring him

He plays on people’s confirmation bias, and other biases, quite well (just like our politicians). Have to give him that, at least

So are you saying that if RA would have lost say $10M from lost sponsors for doing nothing, versus $8M payout to Folau, that they got a bargain? Any figure under the figure of lost sponsors is a win to them?

I’ve asked before from anyone with marketing experience if the adage “no such thing as bad publicity” applies with the Folau case? The few responses I’ve got said, in this case, there was damage done. I’m not so sure, as it’s put rugby in the media, when it otherwise wouldn’t have been. Open to someone with marketing nous to clarify this.
If the “bad publicity” really has done RA damage, then they ‘lost’, in the broader sense of the term, the minute Folau did his first post, then more so after the 2nd post. Even if they payed him nothing.
When it comes to the settlement, numbers are easier to work with. If they paid him his remaining contract amount, or more, to not play, then they lost

I think there were some calls for her to be sacked from netball, and some netball sponsors were asking questions. Netball Australia handled it well by publicly distancing themselves from Israel’s comments, but supporting Maria, as she made no such comments.
However, yes, it does make you wonder how she was included in the apology, but as someone else said, words are cheap, so easier for RA to include her, if it meant paying less

I was mostly copy and pasting the transcript from Cooper, as many of us live overseas and can’t watch the video.
As for McCaw, I’d say he was both great, and got away with a lot. Are all 7’s trying to do this, sure. Did refs pay less attention to him than others? I’d say they did, the aura around him wasn’t just from how good he was, but completed by the way the NZ public and SM arm elevated him to saint status, and went bananas whenever he got the rare bad call.

It all boils down to the unknown sum. If Folau got anywhere near the $8M, then RA both were the losers, and got it wrong. Forget insurance, if an insurer had to fork out Millions, then RA will pay through higher premiums.
If Fitzsimmons’ figure of $300K is correct, then RA are the winners.
As we know he rejected $1M previously, and he then went to mediation cashed up on other people’s money, I see no reason why he accepted anything close to $1M or less.
Would be nice to know the real figure, but given the leaks from RA of confidential information that made Folau look bad, and that we have no leaks of the figure right now, it was almost certainly a substantial figure. My guess when the $8M broke, was 3-5M.
Therefore, numerically, RA lost

I said this in June: “It would be interesting if he’s doing a Game of Thrones type maneuvre. Said what he said – changes mind, wins big in the courts, then takes a lucrative contract elsewhere with a strict SM clause, then stays quiet because ‘well they were upfront about it’. Lots of dollars in the name of God. Builds a new iron throne”
The Wallabies are a better team without Israel Folau
On a more serious note, if he does sign a new contract with a strict SM clause. What should the playlist be for his first game back. Here’s my suggestions:
‘Small town boy’, by Bronski beat
‘It’s a Sin’, by the Petshop boys
‘Lola’ by the kinks
‘Walk on the Wild side’, by Lou Reed
‘Money’ by Pink Floyd
‘It’s money that I love’ by Randy Newman

You might be giving them too much credit. Suppose in the absence of solid evidence we are all left guessing, but I’d back my guess over your shoulder shrug

I couldn’t copy and paste entire transcript. He also said that McCaw was playing dirty, and a master of dirty play. That the knee was his way of responding…some quid pro quo
Quade Cooper opens up on that incident with Richie McCaw
I think you know better than this, but here’s some baby-step abductive reasoning for you
He’s previously rejected 1M, and that was before he was cashed up for lawyers on other people’s money. Therefore, he had nothing to lose by taking it to court. So why would he settle?
I see only two options:
Option 1: He got the apology he wanted, and the cash he wanted. This we can establish is more than 1M, and probably in the 3-5M range. (Feel free to call your mates in RA and clarify this if you want). This is why he left the meeting looking happy and claimed vindication.
Option 2: ‘The Seinfeld’ option. If you remember the show, there was a parody of a real life court case where Kramer took a coffee Cafe to negotiations over him burning himself. The initial offer of “free coffee for life” was quickly snapped up by Kramer before his lawyers could stop him. As the Folau’s might have collectively two brain cells clapping, there’s every chance this scenario happened as well. They walked out looking happy because they just bought the Paul Newman Rolex Daytona, or the harbour bridge, for 100 bucks, thinking they got a bargain.
Do you see another option? If he got $300K, why didn’t he just say no and take a chance (that would cost him nothing) in court?

Forgot to add on McCaw, that he said the knee was in response to McCaw’s dirty play, and that McCaw was a master of dirty play.
Have to give credit to the Kiwi’s for making McCaw untouchable. The best way to cover up his cheating is make a big fuss whenever a Ref pays him attention. The particular low point being a Ref forced to apologise to him, when he got the rare bad call against him. Don’t remember him apologising for his indiscretions.

I forgot to add about what he said about Cheika. Seems Cheika didn’t like being questioned. Which would be ok, if he got results.
I’d say he’s telling the truth and the Wallabies culture has been toxic for some time. Rennie has his work cut out to fix this
Quade Cooper opens up on that incident with Richie McCaw
On kneeing McCaw:
“I had the expectation of 2011 (when the Reds won the Super Rugby title) of playing good football but now I had the pressure of all these guys hating me as well, and a whole country, not just the rugby public. I couldn’t go anywhere. I was on the team bus and there were signs ‘I hope you break your leg, I hope you die in this game’.
“If I had my time again, [because] I know how to handle it now, I’d just say, ‘Yeah I did it, so what?’. Not ‘So what?’, but ‘It’s part of footy, it was a bad play but I did it’, so what could people say?”.
On the locker room:
“ It was a battle of power really, the locker room was really unsettled,” he said.
“There was always disagreements, it was a nightmare, and that’s when I said the environment was toxic, because I didn’t like how it was making me feel because everyone was just arguing.”
The tensions came to the surface, Cooper claimed, after he was forced to play injured against Argentina in the Rugby Championship. He helped steer the team to a 23-19 fight back win but felt let down when coach Robbie Deans admitted he would have benched his No.10 if he’d had that option.
“I hurt my knee in one of the training sessions and told the management I had a bit of floating cartilage. I said, ‘I don’t know if I can play’, they said, ‘No you’re sweet, you can get surgery next week in the week off, this is the last week and we need to win it’,” Cooper said.
“I went into the game and I couldn’t really kick because every time I kicked that bit of cartilage would get stuck in my joint. Willy [Genia], off the kick-off, threw the ball to me, I hesitated to kick and it and ended up getting charged down.
“We won the game and in the media [conference, post-match] Robbie said to the media, ‘If we had a reserve to bring on’ – all our boys got injured – ‘I would have hooked Quade’.
“So we won the game, I’d just played through an injury he knew about, so I felt really let down and embarrassed.
“I took that, and I ended up saying,’ F— you, you’ve just thrown me out to dry’, I said, ‘You’re a s— coach’. Not in those words but I basically said that. We ended up getting in a bit of an argument and that’s when I got fined from the ARU, like $70,000 or something (Cooper was fined a total of $60,000, $20,000 of which was suspended).”
On being Thorned:
“I was just on too much money. Thorny had just took over as coach and he wanted the guys that he wanted. But you’re not able to do that when he’s paying me,” he said. “The easiest way for them was to force me out.”
The manner in which that happened appeared to hurt Cooper, but he revealed that he was able to flip his perspective with the help of good friend Sonny Bill Williams and manager Khoder Nasser.
“I felt really lost because I thought what do I do now? Is this the end of my career?” he said.
“I sat down with Khoder, Sonny, they said, ‘It’s not actually a bad situation’. I have to strip it back, understand it, instead of just letting your ego take over.
“That’s what we were able to pick them up on. They thought my ego would take over and I’d say I’m too good to be playing club football, you can’t treat me like this, and bit back.”
Quade Cooper opens up on that incident with Richie McCaw
The Folau’s left looking very happy. I doubt they were faking that look, the look of victory combined with relief. Which means $300K is a fantasy. Possibly $8M is on the high side. With his war chest, doubt he would take less than $3M. So we are talking a range of $3-8M, with $3-5M being my guess. Hope we find out what the real figure was one day.
Do we have any forensic accountants on the roar who can check RA’s next balance sheet for us?
Castle insists Folau settlement cost less than going to court
What was going around at the time, was that he signed the contract before the end of year tour (EOYT). Then RC and RA realised there was no clause, she then tried to get him to sign an amendment (With a SM clause) on the EOYT. His manager advised against it, so he said no.
If this is true, it’s the reason there was no clause. In short, RA bungled it. Just because RA paid some lawyers to say he breached the CoC, doesn’t mean it would stand up in court. We will never know what the courts would have ruled now.
