I’ve lived in the UK during the last World Cup. I would chat people’s ears off about football and not once did someone refer to the team as ‘The Three Lions.’

Yes, it’s in the song and features in newspaper headlines but it’s not their primary name. They use it as an occasional nickname, we use ‘Socceroos’ as our primary name.

It’s time to finally scrap the name ‘Socceroos’

I never mentioned Americans or Brits mocking our name and if this was the sole reason behind my argument to change it, I completely agree with you – it would be childish.

The Matilda’s is a good nickname. It’s simple and doesn’t attach itself to a term for the game that our governing body tried to stamp out. I don’t think you can put it in the same basket as the Socceroos.

To be honest, I had no idea people cherished the name so much until the comments on the article started rolling in.

I’m not too worried about marketing -just looking at the bigger picture and gaining that pride and respect our national team deserves. Graham Arnold talked about Tuesday being a national holiday. If we are to get point where a national holiday for a big game is actually plausible… would it be more likely to happen for the ‘Socceroos’ or ‘Australia’? Again… it’s a one percenter so don’t bite my head off for suggesting the decision will solely rely on the name.

Thanks Brendan. I’m really surprised by the comments – I thought I’d get a lot more support given that most of my mates share my view.

To be honest, seeing the passion and love for the current name makes me a bit more comfortable with it. I’m certainly not going to continue to push for change if it would upset the majority of supports.

A lot of people on here are talking about recognition. Can you explain a real world consequence of just being ‘Australia’? (Like our men’s cricket team)

To be completely honest, I wouldn’t have as bigger problem with it if we all just called the game Soccer.

When the A-League launched, they did the massive campaign to change every club in Australia from an SC to an FC. From this moment on players, coaches and pundits would only refer to it as football. I got on board with this because I wanted to support the game but it hasn’t really caught on the way they imagined it would and now we’re left in limbo. And for a game that’s really divided in this country, it’s a bit sad we can’t just call it by the same name.

Win something? Like another Asian Cup?

Exactly… what will happen? Will people tune in for France v Australia in a few months thinking the Wallabies are playing?

Our cricket team hasn’t got a nickname and have been the most popular national team for large periods of time. Why don’t they suffer from the identity crisis that everyone thinks will happen if the socceroos lose their nickname?

Facebook to Meta is a really good analogy. While it may seem pointless and confusing right now… in 5 years time nobody will question it because it’s reflective of where company will be. I see changing/removing the Socceroos name as the same process – people will get annoyed and question it now but in 5 years time, everyone will realise it was the right move.

I understand where you’re coming from but to say that it is the most cherished and respected name in Australian sport is just plain false. Try telling that to ardent afl fans, Queensland rugby league supporters or rugby union die-hards – that’s a large chunk of our sporting community. I’ve even got mates who sit up to watch their epl teams week-in week-out and couldn’t be bothered setting the alarm for the Peru match. Don’t get me wrong, I love love love the team and want to see them succeed more than anything in the world… but you can’t deny that there isn’t plenty of room to grow.

One of the most important things for football in this country is unity… between our local teams, the NPL, the A-League and the national team. How can we even begin to imagine what unity looks like if we can’t even agree on what to call the sport?

I think it’s broken for the reasons mentioned in the article.

I’d really like to know why you think it’s good? And be objective – playing the like / not like game will get us nowhere

I’m not saying soccer is derogatory phrase. I’m simply stating that a tonne of time/money/effort went into creating unified approach years ago… but the name the ‘Socceroos’ undermines everything.

I didn’t mention exposure. If we’re purely fixated on getting more exposure, we should wear Wiggles costumes to the World Cup.

As I mentioned in the article, it’s about pride and respect.

Also, would love to see the white socks!

100% it’s not the most pressing issue.

Like I mentioned it the article it’s a one percenter that can easily be implemented.

The issues that I’m sure you are alluding to are complex and require time and investment, and are completely out of the hands of the fans.

Can you please let me know which assertions are incorrect?

Can you also provide a reference to John O’Neill claiming that the name is ‘officially dead’. I know he said it would fade away over time but I haven’t heard him declare it dead.

It’s time to finally scrap the name ‘Socceroos’

I’m not saying people don’t like it. I’m saying it isn’t suitable for the reasons I mentioned.

And we don’t need a nickname let alone a unique nickname.

England are nicknamed ‘The Three Lions’ but the majority of commentators/fans/pundits just refer to them as England. And it works.
