I never saw Matthews, so in terms of the best players I’ve seen, for me it’s Dunstall at 1, Hodge 2 and Crawford 3. Buddy and Sam Mitchell round out the top 5.

The General, my number one Hawk

It’s easy to forget just how desperate the club was through the mid-late 90s and then how poor on field we were during the early 00s, post the 01 prelim (which we should’ve won!!).

Hodge will be remembered ever more fondly as a major part of the entire turnaround.

The General, my number one Hawk

Great piece. As a Melbourne-based sports fan who didn’t immediately embrace the A-league, I’ve since jumped on board the Heart and it is interesting to see the different treatment of it, as apposed to the big brother in the media. The disappointing thing for Heart is that there is really no definitetive reason for any football fan to switch from Victory to Heart. Had they have made the team based in Geelong or given them a different name (ei South East or West Melbourne) perhaps it would’ve given them a better point of difference.

I think on the pitch it’s been a really encouraging start – hopefully they can give the finals a shake.

Don't discount the Melbourne Heart

I understand your apprehension, but I think I know what will help ease it.

As a Hawks supporter who is reasonably aware of off-field behaviour, I can tell you, when you see the big Bud sprinting down the wing, or hurdling over players and kicking breathtaking goals from 55 metres, you’ll forget about everyone else and stand to cheer.
No player in my time of watching football generates as much excitement from the crowd as he does. Watch the looks on little kids faces when he kicks one of these goals, it’s priceless.

Yes football is more professional and it’s (rightly) all about team structure and discipline, but I feel sorry for anyone who doesn’t get swept up in individual acts of brilliance Buddy supplies.

I’m sure going to miss them.

Buddy's toughest assignment? Winning over the Swans faithful

*ALERT* I am a hawks fan.

I agree with much of the article and would be really annoyed if Hawthorn offered anyone a 9 year deal.
There is one point I’ll pick you up on. I’m the last person to blame the umpires for anything, but anyone who believes there is a protection from the umpires for Buddy, clearly hasn’t seen too many hawks games. Without looking them up, I’m fairly sure the stats back me up on this one!

Already we’ve seen some negative effects to the Swans structure with the addition of Tippett, it’s going to be interesting to see how the addition of Franklin will change it further.

Swans fans...is anyone else a little unsure about our new Buddy?

Finally from Sydney willing to admit he’s heard of Franklin! Great point Dylan. This is especially the case for sports fans who may not have totally embraced AFL yet. As a Melbourne-based sports fan I never really showed much love for the Storm, but my interest sparked when we (and I refer to them as we now) had Inglis, Smith and Slater running a muck (Who knew it would be too good to be true!?)

Dusty and Buddy could both be Giants in 2014

I withdraw my taking the Expert banner comment! Staggering that someone would make that edit.

Australia's batting options for the Ashes

I was under the impression he was actually talking about run rates. If he’s confused strike rate with average, you’d have to think the “Expert” banner needs to be removed.

Australia's batting options for the Ashes

Can someone explain to me why Rohan is emphasizing strike-rates in analysing test aspirants?

Australia's batting options for the Ashes

Glad you mentioned the fact that the old Fitzroy song was far superior to the current version.
It was an absolute cracker. It’s a shame 90’s babies like me (well ’88, but you get the point) didn’t get to hear it too often!

18 footy theme songs in 18 days: #15 'The pride of Brisbane town'

It would a wonderful result for GWS. Both on the field and off.

Can’t agree that losing Fevola didn’t hurt Carlton. The Blues were crying out for a key forward with half his ability for a couple of years after his departure. Having said that I highly doubt they regret letting him go.

Hawthorn should let Buddy walk

No doubt Daisy has had a bad year, but when he gets his body right, he is elite. Not sure about your second point on him, perhaps some reports, but I don’t think you can say all reports suggest he’s an ordinary bloke, as that’s certainly not what I’ve heard.

Hawthorn should let Buddy walk

It’s a really good point. I suppose as a (only slightly) more mature supporter I was talking strictly about the on-field effects.
There is no doubt Bud is by far the kids favourite, you just have to see how many wear 23 on their footy jumpers, or “Little Buddys” as I call them.
It would be my hope the club can convert those kids into Little Cyrils, Little Gunstans or Big Puopolos’.
I’d like to think the club is strong enough off the field now to cope.

Hawthorn should let Buddy walk

It’s certainly not tanking in my view, because Lyon did it to give Freo its best opportunity at a premiership, not to gain an advantage at the draft table. In terms of the Geelong v Brisbane almost result, I suppose he’ll be viewing that as “all’s well that ends well”.

Is resting players a subtle form of tanking?
