Cricket has long been called a gentleman's game but is this still the case? In light of the recent on-field 'sledging' that has stolen…
I accept your challenge, and humbly request your own team of Gentlemen. I wonder who else besides Gilchrist that you would deem worthy of the honour?
Selecting cricket's Gentleman's XI
In response to some of the comments, I would respond with a few points.
Firstly, in regards to Freddie Flintoff, I must say that his handshake with Brett Lee, after England’s nail biting win at Edgbaston, was in my opinion one of the greatest moments in recent cricketing memory, and while this was not the sole contributing factor to his inclusion it was a great moment for the game, and made me unable to omit him.
Secondly, on Adam Gilchrist, it seems to me that there are a surprisingly high number of ‘keepers that would not look out of place on such a list, however I was torn between him and Dhoni, and only settled on Dhoni because I often find myself surprised by how much I am rooting for him despite him playing against Australia, which is a minor reason I’ll admit, but a reason nonetheless.
Third, Brett Lee. Although I tried to keep this list strictly to on field behaviour, attitude etc., I will admit that Lee’s record and persona of the pitch made just as large contribution to his inclusion as his work on it. Having said that, I stand by my decision even if it is kept solely to on field behaviour.
Finally, Hashim Amla, I must agree this is a notable omission on my part, and can think of no other reason for his non inclusion other then a sheer mistake, while there may not have been room for him in the actual 11, I rate him as highly as any of the other players who got a mention. He is truly a modern great not only in terms of skill but also the way in which he conducts himself.
Selecting cricket's Gentleman's XI
A truly awe inspiring team, but surely Mr Cricket could be squeezed in at 6.
