Hynes and Luai each have more try assists than DCE and Dearden. Qld have more star backs who can pull out the miracle play. But how many times have NSW had that and lost the series to a Qld team with better halves and more committed grind?

Bold ambition: Maguire's right to take risks with new-look Blues squad - there’s no second-guessing in Origin

Agree. I think Madge is going for a much simplified playing style (hence Edwards and Robson over Teddy and Api). Just ran an eye over the stats – he has picked players (forwards and backs) with high work rate and high run metres. No ‘stars’. I don’t mind it.

He’s 2nd 😊

Blues Origin team: Tedesco, Api axed, Trbojevic to captain, Maguire picks SEVEN debutants, Hynes in doubt

Try Assists so far for the competing halves this season:

DCE – 10 vs Hynes 12

Deardon – 3 vs Luai 7

Blues Origin team: Tedesco, Api axed, Trbojevic to captain, Maguire picks SEVEN debutants, Hynes in doubt

NSW still had the highest scoring player.

He just happened to be playing for the other side…

I’m guessing the reason both Koroisau and Tedesco were not selected was because Madge wants to simplify the playing style. Both are unpredictable, off the cuff players. He’s gone with less creative, more hard yakka options. KISS. Hope it works 😁

Agree that sin bin was harsh. But could you explain why in your opinion it wasn’t a hip drop? It met three and a half of the NRL’s 4 criteria: Grab (yes), Swing (hardly any), Drop weight (yes), Direct Forceful Contact with lower leg (yes).

Did you mean to say Luai minus Cleary beats the comp leaders, and head to head crushes the front runner for the Blues 7 jersey?

I guess you’d better write that book jimmmy. I missed the bit in the NRL criteria that said the swing had to be deliberate. If you’ve got it, please share it.

NRL Round 12 judiciary: Klemmer faces ban, Holmes in strife for hip drop, Latrell, Radley charged

Curious that Aidan Sezer’s record was bad enough that he got 4 weeks for a hip drop (that didn’t meet all of the NRL’s criteria for a hip drop) while Mitchell got off with a fine. Given breaking Manu’s face and elbowing Sean Johnson are some of Trell’s recent judiciary highlights I’m curious to know what Sezer has been up to that makes his record so much worse…?

Blues Origin team: Tedesco, Api axed, Trbojevic to captain, Maguire picks SEVEN debutants, Hynes in doubt

Sorry NQR. Loyalty to your team aside, it’s 100% a hip drop. Check out the NRL video posted below for an explanation of the key indicators. He grabs, swings, lands directly and forcefully on the leg. Whether it’s accidental is irrelevant. I don’t think anyone at NRL HQ is suggesting they would prefer a head high tackle (also illegal and regularly binned) – they are trying to eliminate all dangerous tackles that could potentially result in injury. Given that this tackle resulted in an injury to Papalii, it clearly fits that criterion.

I like him on an edge. Lanky edge backrower with an offload. And as a young player he’s got a lot of upside. Personally I’d like to see them move Bateman on.

NRL News: Two players stood down under no-fault policy, Seibold walks out of contract talks, Panthers pounce on Tiger

Yup. Enormous potential. Just needs to be coached and used well… by someone like BA. 😡

NRL News: Two players stood down under no-fault policy, Seibold walks out of contract talks, Panthers pounce on Tiger

Panthers don’t poach players. Only other, evil, clubs do that.

2024 NRL Transfer Centre: Warriors reward late bloomer, Titans sign Gordon in a flash, Brown turns trial deal into contract

Agree TB. I miss the grubber in goal. Also, I suspect the reduced threat of the grubber also results in less uncertainty for goal line defenders and makes it harder to orchestrate a try by going through the hands.

NRL doesn't need any more rule changes but a tweak required for unintended consequences of seven-tackle set

No argument that at this moment Souths have a clearer and better plan for digging themselves out of the hole next season – to the extent of hiring Wayne Bennett. However, the two teams’ prospects for next season are irrelevant to the present conversation. You said Eels have gone worse than Bunnies this season. The W/L, For and Against and margin of scores all say they haven’t. As for your call that the Eels players are “dysfunctional”… it’s an odd claim given that a substantial chunk of headlines this season have been about dysfunctional players and their dysfunctional relationship with coaching staff at Souths. I’m struggling to recall any significant news stories this season about dysfunction among the Eels ranks?

Bennett twist to Eels' tale with Arthur sacked, Barrett taking over: 'Progress of our team has stalled'

Agree 100%. But it wouldn’t hurt him to sit alongside McNamara for a year or two. And wouldn’t that be an insanely good coaching combo for the Eels?

The Parra Project: Why Eels have to be brave with their coaching choice to break premiership drought

Agree BG. The first question to answer in selecting the team is where are the Blues’ points going to come from?

Burton vs Luai vs Walker for Blues No.6 jersey should be no-brainer decision for Maguire

With Billy Slater as assistant coach.

The Parra Project: Why Eels have to be brave with their coaching choice to break premiership drought

Hmm. Not super convinced. Both Eels and Bunnies have had some bad second half collapses. Bunnies v Panthers has to take the cake. And over all Eels have scored more and conceded less and won more games than the Bunnies – so it’s a bit of a stretch to say they’ve gone worse just because their second halves have not been as good as their first. You’re kind of saying Souths have been better because they’ve been more consistent at being worse…

Bennett twist to Eels' tale with Arthur sacked, Barrett taking over: 'Progress of our team has stalled'

The slo-mo only emphasised what was already obvious from the full speed replay and the original vision. He lost control of the ball. Knock on 24/7 365.

reckon they’ve gone worse than South Sydney

On what metric?

Bennett twist to Eels' tale with Arthur sacked, Barrett taking over: 'Progress of our team has stalled'

It was a tricky one. The tackle was horrible technique and asking for trouble. I think the one mitigating factor was that Papalii’s weight didn’t land directly on Kikau’s leg – he actually landed a couple of centimetres off Kikau’s ankle, but on Weekes’ leg, which landed on Kikau’s leg. Still arguably too light a suspension for the potential danger of the tackle.

Also tricky – There was a tackle by Kikau on Cotric about five minutes from the end, where Kikau grabbed the back of Cotric’s jersey and sat down – then slid with forceful contact of his hip directly onto Cotric’s ankle. From the brief definition from the rules that I read (shared by jimmmy in an earlier thread) that tackle met the criteria for a hip drop. No penalty. No charge. NRL still has some sorting out to do if they want to eradicate this from the game.
