Fiji get robbed by refereeing every World Cup. Same thing happened in the opening game of 2015 RWC against England.

'Officiating killed us': Fiji fury over 'grotesque' refereeing as Semi Radradra fumble lets Wales off hook

I’d say Pocock is the only one with a very strong case. He was immense in 2011 (his game against SA in QF was one of the best individual games I’ve seen) and was named in team of the tournament in 2015 as a number 8.

Tough not being able to pick both Campese and Roff. Pocock made team of the tournament in 2015 as number 8 so think he should’ve been allowed to be picked there. My real team: 1 – Daly 2 – Kearns 3 – McKenzie 4 – Giffin 5 – Eales 6 – Ofahengaue 7 – Smith 8 – Pocock 9 – Farr-Jones 10 – Larkham 11 – Campese 12 – Horan 13 – Mortlock 14 – Roff 15 – Burke

He had less than 30 dismissals surprisingly. Probably because he hasn’t kept much since 2019. Yeah good points about prodigies and conditions. I could’ve done so but would take a bit longer to work out the difference between stats in England and outside. Thought I’d keep it simple and consistent for now.

Ashes Moneyball: What would the Australian squad look like if it was selected on stats alone

Great point. The Aus Selectors always seem to love picking players before they’re ready. Voges and Hussey are great examples. Marcus Harris is probably one that was picked too early so now everyone thinks he’s a failure. Whereas the numbers say he’s a better batsman now then the times when he played test cricket in his 20’s. The selectors new favourite Lance Morris simply because of his pace being ahead of Michael Neser is another example of them favouring the youth over record.

Peirson actually just sneaks ahead of Carey on D/M lol but it’s very close. Carey batting drops to 37.42 with 3.54 D/M = 49.56. Peirson remains on 36.28, 3.79 D/M = 49.90. Lyon remains ahead of all the spinners still so the rest is correct.

Very surprised they’ve only selected 4 quicks. They had 6 in the 2019 squad.

Ashes squad announced: Marsh gets surprise recall, Warner avoids axe but two openers picked as cover, Morris out

He’s back bowling in IPL now. Hardie is very unlucky though – 43 with the bat and 29 with the ball in first class cricket

Can you give the top 10 or 15 batsmen and bowlers without the 25% weighting for test performances? Batsmen: 1. Labuschagne 2. Green 3. Smith 4. Pucovski 5. Khawaja 6. Wade 7. Head 8. Harris 9. S. Marsh 10. Hardie 11. Maddinson 12. Handscomb 13. Henriques 14. Bancroft 15. Webster 16. Renshaw 17. Warner 18. Whiteman 19. Carey. So Warner takes a huge fall. Bowling: 1. Neser 2. Cummins 3. Boland 4. Paris 5. Hazlewood 6. Tremain 7. Siddle 8. Steketee 9. Sutherland 10. Bird 11. Morris 12. Pattinson 13. Bartlett 14. Copeland 15. Abbott 16. Conway 17. Worrall 18. Starc. So Starc takes a huge fall. Pretty disgraceful that Neser has missed out on the real ashes squad

Neser robbed

Very well put!

Ashes Moneyball: What would the Australian squad look like if it was selected on stats alone

That’s a good point but then test players also have to have difficult series in India, England etc. I found 25% to be the sweet spot to keep continuity in the team.

What more does Hughes have to do? In the last 4 years he has scored 1186 runs at an average of 69.76 and strike rate of 90.74 in the Marsh One Day Cup. As good as he is in tests, Labuschagne has not shown to be an effective ODI player (average of 32.16, strike rate of 84.54 from 27 matches) – his overall list A record is not much better. Since Head has relished being an opener, Hughes should be given a go at the number 4 spot if runs in this format mean anything. Agar, Inglis, Abbott, Stoinis also lucky to make the squad. Kuhnemann, Bancroft, Tye unlucky.

Warner returning to India: Selectors go back to the past in veteran-heavy Australian ODI squad

Close to what I had. Only 0.31 difference. Chalmers might be a bit fatigued (‘only’ swam 47.54 in the heat last night) so this could be our best team. Happy they’ve started with Kaylee and Zac

Fair point, I will play around with it at 30 and 35% and see if any results change.

Moneyball: Selecting the Australian Test team on stats only

Good point Brett, and that was the exact reason I didn’t pick a Captain. Couldn’t see anyone in the 11 that really stood out as an exceptional leader. You want the captain to be a clear choice in the 11 too, and the only non-bowler that applies to is Khawaja.

Moneyball: Selecting the Australian Test team on stats only

Wade was mostly let down by his past performances with the bat for Australia. Yep, fair point, I certainly don’t have the data to pull off such a sophisticated analysis. I just used it for a bit of attention to show that I was purely picking players based on the formula rather than any sort of subjectivity.

Moneyball: Selecting the Australian Test team on stats only

Correct, only went with shield stats, which don’t favour Renshaw this season, but he certainly had a great County stint last season. After the Sri Lanka series, I will look at incorporating County stats, as it will be a strong indicator of how they perform in English conditions. I thought about separating openers from middle order, but simply picked the top 5 due to the fact Harris and Khawaja opened together in the last test.

Moneyball: Selecting the Australian Test team on stats only

Wow, big call. If he goes well, looks like I will have to lower my minimum requirements on matches.

Moneyball: Selecting the Australian Test team on stats only

Lack of matches for Pucovski. He only played 1 in 16-17, 3 in 17-18 and 2 in 18-19, meaning he has only played 1.9 Weighted Average Matches (Well short of the 5 required). His Weighted Average is a phenomenal 75.73 (Second only to Smith). If he proves his great start is no fluke, and plays each shield match he should be in the top 5 batsman next season.
