Brett agree there shouldn’t be but in practice there is. From memory this SR trans Tasman there was a red card to Damien Mackenzie that some commentators were saying was wrong and then I can’t remember which Barrett it was but it was a pretty clear red card which was only given as a yellow.

Whereas in the premiership the players and commentators know exactly what is going to happen because it’s consistent.

'No answers': Only questions and confusion left lingering from Wallabies' loss to England

I would suggest the difference in cards is more down to how head contact is officiated in Aus & NZ and as a result not as strong a technique change as in NH.

It is a good point though about the influence the home tv director has. Not sure how you solve that though. no independent person will be quicker at controlling the replays as the host broadcaster

'No answers': Only questions and confusion left lingering from Wallabies' loss to England

Agree cookie the pressure exerted by both defenses were exceptional IMO. Both teams scramble defense stopped a lot of those line break opportunities.

'No answers': Only questions and confusion left lingering from Wallabies' loss to England

Both sides were clunky in attack but I think you need to credit the defences of each side a lot more. England defence put pressure on wallaby attack and superior kicking game meant game was played well away from danger zone. England played how you would expect with new personnel and attack coach whilst giving away multiple stupid penalties

MATCH REPORT: Brave but bumbling, the Wallabies fall to Eddie for eighth straight time

As an English supporter the key to stopping England is gain line. To be within a shout you have to win the gain line against English attack. If you don’t the 10/12 are too good, the forwards can move the point of contact too well (look at the ball playing skills of genge, sinckler and George possible the best ball playing front row in the world). In previous times if you got gainline the English attack struggled. The big unknown is now with Smith at 10 can england still score tries with no gainline

'Playing smarter rugby': Why Wallabies have a good chance of breaking England drought

Don’t suppose you want to email Eddie to include this tactic against Australia 😂

You aren't imagining it... proof the Wallabies were hard done by

Surely this can’t be the case every 5m lineout drive teams don’t compete wait for two players to bind to the catcher and penalty to you. Is there no exception during the lineout?

Surely this is not an intended consequence of the wedge law?

You aren't imagining it... proof the Wallabies were hard done by

But that’s a maul offence with no need to reference the new wedge ruling. My understanding of what occurred is scotland players bound onto the ball carrier thus forming a wedge. so with this new rule this is now a penalty. Without this wedge rule however I think the try is good.

Man at the front was in possession until engaged by a defender. Yes the person in possession holds the ball right under scotland 7 at the back of the maul nose but if he is still holding the ball he hasn’t actually transferred it. He then does this when contact is made.

You aren't imagining it... proof the Wallabies were hard done by

How does this wedge rule relate to the maul then? Surely you just non compete at lineout wait for the team to form a wedge then appeal to referee? Or am I missing something here?

So just to clarify you can’t be a good player in a bad team?

Now I’m interested who do you rate more highly then Alun wyn Jones, Parisse or Hooper?

The Wrap: Dumb rugby sees Wallabies sacrifice too many points at Murrayfield

Paddy

How do you rate Sergio Parisse then he has a career win ratio of 25% yet was included in world rugby’s team of the decade?

Or Alun Wyn Jones also with a win ratio of 50% over tests?

You know you can be a good player and lose. It’s a team game after all…

The Wrap: Dumb rugby sees Wallabies sacrifice too many points at Murrayfield

Really rate Wisemantal as a coach when he was coaching england attack they looked soo dangerous and now the wallabies have put together some good attacking play as well.

Coach's Corner Issue 32: What do Scotland have in store for the Wallabies?

The defender is always able to contest possession within the framework of the laws. Clearly there are rules about how the defender is able to do that. Look at that ruckgate game. As clever it was no one would want to watch rugby if the defenders are allowed to stand 1m away from the scrum half and block any sort of wide attack.

The law as it is should favour the attacking team but these deliberate knock ons are always when the defense know they are getting beaten on the outside otherwise you go with two hands and have a knock on

The laws of rugby and their loose connection with common sense

Because rugby is a game about contesting possession. If you are in possession of the ball and knock on the other team is already advantaged because they gain the advantage of scrum feed. When you kick the ball no team is in possession similar to lineouts. So if no team is in possession and knocks on you get the scrum feed.

It is extremely rare to go to catch the ball one handed from a pass so if you are trying to win possession using one hand only they should be sanctioned with a yellow card IMO. If he goes with two hands he has knocked on because he has made a normal (some might say realistic) attempt to catch the ball.

If they get it to stick in one hand then we all clap and say well done making a high risk play. But if in your attempt with one hand you don’t come close to bringing it in off the park you go.

The laws of rugby and their loose connection with common sense

He may well have read the play but he then made the mistake of not being in the correct position to use two hands to catch. If that happens and he drops it its just a knock on which is fair but just as a player arriving late to a contest in the air or not adjusting their tackle height/technique players should know if they go one handed they get carded.

The laws of rugby and their loose connection with common sense

If deliberate knock-ons are not carded a lot of attacking play will be killed off. The game as it is has too few line breaks. Many of these knock-ons are from last defender in the touch line/ outside channel plays. I think there has to be yellow cards otherwise it will turn into league where players bat the ball down.

If the player goes with two hands they are rarely penalised so you either go with two hands. If you aren’t in position to do that you roll the dice and come up with an intercept or 10 minutes in the bin or you turn around to try and stop the break.

Barrett should have been carded because the attack has manipulated him into a compromised position he rolled the dice and was very lucky not to be carded. I don’t buy a line break isn’t going to happen just because one defender is covering. See the second half with reece and ioane where they interchange passes 3 or 4 times. Wales are prevented that opportunity. The winger could have kicked to in goal and won the foot race to score a try. That attack opportunity is denied by Barrett so he should be gone for 10 minutes.

It is irritating that kayo and stan have different length FF or RW. 2 clicks for kayo and three for stan to skip the setting up of the scrum.

CONFIRMED: Stan Sport reveals plan for spring tour coverage of Wallabies, All Blacks and Springboks

Yes but do South Africa win with less boxing and more sniping? If SA play more off 10/12 do they have a game plan that will win? For me its the most intriguing of Englands matches this autumn. My understanding is Kolbe is still out injured so arguably the two most influential SA backs are out. Aren’t there also injuries for second and back rows. Without that 80 minute forward intensity can SA dominate like they did in the world cup?

Who knows but I’m pretty sure it will be tight.

ANALYSIS: Eddie Jones facing acid Tests as Wallabies and Springboks aim to pile on his misery

Yes apparently playing Italy is more important

ANALYSIS: Eddie Jones facing acid Tests as Wallabies and Springboks aim to pile on his misery

A lot has been made about the world cup final and rightfully so but I can’t help thinking that SA are there for the taking. 60% win rate since the world cup. No Faf, end of a long season, against Australia when they tried to play some rugby they got undone.

I anticipate a close one but fancy England’s chances. Will be interesting to see how games go.

ANALYSIS: Eddie Jones facing acid Tests as Wallabies and Springboks aim to pile on his misery

My understanding is it is much more political than that, from memory in 2018 Steve Hansen said less is more & at the time heard that NZ kick up a fuss about how often they are expected to play in NH as opposed to England touring in NZ. I seem to recall NZ don’t like the way the money is split. Personally I can’t see the RFU not wanting to cash in on games with All Blacks. As always it comes down to money…

ANALYSIS: Eddie Jones facing acid Tests as Wallabies and Springboks aim to pile on his misery

I think if Smith starts it will be Smith/Farrell/Tuilagi. Slade on the bench this November & Daly when fit. This give Eddie the option of shutting up shop by reverting to Farrell, Tuilagi, Slade or if chasing the game switch to Smith, Tuilagi, Slade.

Either way I’m fascinated to see how a Smith Farrell axis can work. NB seemed to indicate little chance of success but if you have Tuilagi in the team I don’t see why he can’t be 12 on attack.

The Enigma of England: Second best but always expecting a slip up

If you go to a pub and there is one d-head spouting off does that then mean that all pub goers are d-heads?

I dont really understand the furore over taking off a runner ups medal. If your aim is to win the world cup and you lose is it arrogant to not be happy to coming second? When does the drive to be the best lead into arrogance? Is/was Michael jordan arrogant? Do you need a bit of arrogance to be the best in the world?

The Enigma of England: Second best but always expecting a slip up

I think you may be disappointed again and get baby rhino (Genge) against Tongan Thor Tupou. I don’t know what the odds are but it would be a good bet for Genge as Vice Captain. BBC rugby union weekly pod Eddie talked about the need for diversity in the leadership group & Genge ticks all the leadership boxes.

Will be interesting to see if Tupou starts or comes off the bench. I’m interested to see how he goes against NH teams. Some games Tupou just seems to be dealt with whereas others he will win multiple penalties.

Jones excludes four big names from England squad

Luke Cowan Dickie has overtaken George as best hooker. Others hookers in squad are Blamire & Dolly.
Loose head Ellis Genge potential england vice captain & Joe marler edge out Mako. Davison covers both side of scrum as does Marler.
I think Eddie knows enough about vunipolas & George and is looking at the talent below in terms of squad depth.
Part of it as well is both George & Mako toured with the lions so they may be happy to have a bit of a breather.
