Bugger off David. All we need is our premier batsmen Nathan Lyon to convert his starts and there won’t be an issue.

Perth pitch no guaranteed perk for Aussies

I get where you’re coming from, I do, and I also commend you on putting an article up…but for me part of the enjoyment of sport (both as a player and consumer) was also playing the whistle. Sure it sucked when i was batting playing 4ths and it was about time for tea so the umpire was giving out anything that hit the pads, but also if we were in the field that’s when i wanted to bowl.

The decisions more or less even out after time, and if you get a life from the umpire make it count.

For my money, sport never had to be perfectly adjudicated at all times, just fairly adjudicated. I never felt in unfair to cop a bad decision from an ump.

I actually quite like the current system – if you know you’re not out review it – if not walk. if you waste a review and your team gets shortchanged later on then that’s not the umpires fault.

We don’t want cricket going the way of league in the late 2000s where the video ref was checking everything. NRL learned it’s lesson and now the video ref can only look at what happens in the in goal – the rest of the game is left to the refs.

An alternative to the DRS

Good write up Dan. Unfortunately i was suckered into purchasing Fox when the rights deal was announced – I’m sure fox were promising an unmissable summer of cricket (something i found funny, as it was very easy to miss for people without pay tv). If the Aus team keep this up at home my subscription will be cancelled quite quickly as I’d prefer to watch nothing than to many repeats of yesterday.

The Liebke Ratings: Australia vs South Africa, first ODI

You had me praising you DL, now I’ve got to take a shot at your ‘lazy journalism’ re the cricket. I mean Dan Liebke constantly finds positives to write about even when we’re failing…

Des Hasler, Ben Barba and Quade Cooper give this week a good sporting feel

Nice one Lordy. Des should never have been punted by us, especially after the contract announcement. Des didn’t quit the dogs, he was working with what he had created. 2 GF’s, and only missed the finals once – I’ll back he had his plans on how to manage the roster and he should have been given the chance to work with what he created.

Good to see him back at Manly though.

Also great to see Barba back. Hopefully he can keep his form up.

Loving the positive articles, if you can get on to CK and Buzz etc and have them follow suit that’d be great.

Yeah, I tend to agree Joe. I can’t see the sharks getting up over melbourne unless they can put together another first 40 like that.

If they can get a fast start and hold out the first stanza, then they might be able to scrape home again, but if Melbourne can run with them I’d say Cronulla are cooked.

Have Cronulla played their grand final?

I don’t like it mate. thanks for having a crack, and its a good conversation to have though (side note, can people still converse or does it all becoming shouting and slanging matches these days?).

If you’re going to have 5 point trys for anything inside your half then apply it to intercepts & ball spills too. If you’re good enough to pick off a pass and run 80m, why dock the point. Personally i think leave it at 4 all round.

Field goals – well if you’re getting rid of that then get rid of conversions and penalty goals because it’s the same concept. I’d get rid of golden point, for golden try but if you can knock over a field goal or three, why shouldn’t you get rewarded.

7 tackle set – completely agree here. Alternative option is that if the kick is inside the attacking 20 and goes dead its a 20m restart, if it’s outside the 20m then the set starts from wherever the kick was taken. I’d be happy with that.

Four rule changes for rugby league

Soccer and I have a strange relationship. I played club for a few years as a kid, played on and off for my school teams during my teens (if the matches fit in around League/Union/Cricket) and followed the EPL highlights religiously on SBS until Leeds got relegated at which point I pretty well disengaged for good.

I’ll get on board with the odd world cup (this one mostly escaped my attention).

I went to an A-League game a few years ago, Roar vs Perth at Brisbane. I had a good time, the atmosphere was great (mostly created by the Perth supporters – expat Poms singing and carrying on), but I haven’t been back since and I rarely watch games on the tele.

Today though, is the most interested I’ve been in the A-League probably ever. If Bolt signs (it’s a training deal + the FFA have to come to the party with more $ from what I understand) then I’ll probably watch some games.

If the standard is as good as has been written in comments above then I should serve a chance of getting into it properly. From my tragic love of cricket I know that Bolt has some ability there, so I’m interested to see if he also has any skill here.

Maybe it’s a fleeting interest (i.e. Hayne & the NFL) or maybe it’ll be enough to hook me. Or if not me, maybe some others.

It's so crazy it just might work: Why Usain Bolt to the A-League might be worth it

Matt Cleary – Slam Poet.

Queensland? Queensland is over

I’ll give you a sweet rugby league 2 hack – play benji or jamie soward at full back – 40/20s all day.

Freddy's team will either work really well or fail miserably

I can only agree with TB – our administration made the errors, it’s nobody else’s fault we’re in crisis. They overestimated the cap (sure it would have helped knowing what the cap would be) and they signed the contracts. We don’t deserve outside help nor should we ask for it.

They also signed Aaron Woods which led to losing James Graham (which I still can’t understand, for the money he’s on we could have gotten Cooper Cronk on a 2 year deal to partner Foran).

The only way clubs will learn is if examples are made of those who make these mistakes.

The upside to this is the dogs should have some decent cash cows for my fantasy team over the next few years…

Another NRL club in crisis

I can’t stand fergo. cannot work out why he keeps getting picked in rep teams.

anyway, my back 5

1. tedesco
2. cotric
3. roberts
4. aitken
5. addo-carr

Having said that, i wouldn’t be disappointed if they opted for mitchell over roberts.

Freddy’s NSW backline conundrum

mate, there’s a reason that the ICC only banned them for 1 game. The 12 month thing is so over the top it’s not funny. It’s rough on Bancroft that Somerset tore up his contract, but I have no issue with these guys continuing to ply there trade and make a living while they can’t play First Class cricket in Australia.

By the same token, I think that they owe the game for the damage they’ve caused so during the Aus. summer they should be playing grade cricket – but while it’s the off season here let the boys play.

What message does it send if Smith and Warner play County cricket?

Good write up Mary, watching the game I also can’t work out what Parra’s issues are. Well actually I can for some of them but I think my question is why they are.

1. Mitchel Moses getting binned two weeks in a row. No side can really afford to lose a half for 10 minutes in any given week, let alone two running…make that the first two of the year. Terrible example for the rest of the side he’s supposed to be controlling on the field.

2. errors. you pointed it out. Again this feels like the same discipline issue as mitch moses is having with the refs.

3. Forward pack – got decimated. Matty Johns brought up the point of Parra doing a half hour warm up on the field in the heat. That probably contributed, but they are short up front and in need of at least another Nathan Brown.

4. Hayne/Radarada – During the offseason I was convinced that Hayne would be a like for like swap with Semi. Both can take those big, devastating runs. I know everyone wants Jarryd to have the ball in his hands as much as possible, which is why he’s at centre & not the wing but I think this accentuates Semi’s loss. Move Hayne to left wing, drop Auva’a, bring Takarangi back to right centre & reunite his combo with Hoffman.
The added benefit of Hayne at 2 is that it’s far easier to get the ball in his hands for kick returns. Either straight swap with French or just have French give him the ball like they did with Radrada.

Coaching is easy from down here isn’t it.

What's the matter, Parramatta?

how dare you bring logic into this

Time to leave the novelty players at home

comparing the current side vs aus in 2000 isn’t a fair comparison. at the moment we need everyone (especially the top 3) contributing to come up with a decent score, back in 2000 i think ponting was still being blooded as a test player and batting at 6. Agreed Uzi shouldn’t have been dropped when he was, but i also think he shouldn’t be being picked for the sake of it now, if he can’t make runs at the SCG then he’ll be dropped again.

The selectors are to blame for Usman's poor form

Bancroft 6
neville 7
lehmann not yet

How will Cameron Bancroft slot into the Australian Test side?

No, but he should be in the side. Kerry O’Keefe has it right for mine. Bancroft at 6. Neville at 7. Smith to bowl 10 overs of leggies. Sure up the shaky middle order, and let the countries best keeper do his thing.

Should the selectors punt on Cam Bancroft as 'keeper?

I don’t really think he’s gambling his legacy. With the chooks roster (even minus pearce and/or friend) i can’t see them missing the 8. If Cooper takes them to a premiership then, as you said, we’re talking about him as a possible immortal, stepping out of the Cam Smith shadow, a match winner in his own right. If they don’t win the comp, but make the 2nd or 3rd week of the finals, that’s not a slight on his legacy. that’s footy.

If the chooks keep a relatively injury free run and miss the 8, or perhaps get bundled out in week 1 of the finals, we start saying well Cooper should have retired. Realistically though I doubt that’ll happen.

Safe bet for Cronk I reckon.

Cronk gambles his legacy on being able to Melbournise the Rooster rabble

Good read Alec. Personally I’ve never had an issue with the mankad (as an offie who bowls straight breaks it was my best chance of taking a wicket) but I think there’s a courtesy in warning the batsmen once. Usually this is enough to keep them honest in my experience.

Salman the sportsman? Am I missing something?

If Woods comes at the expense of Graham I’ll be livid. Tolman too for that matter – I still can’t see how he hasn’t got a sky blue jersey.

The only acceptable way for him to join ranks is for Eastwood & Kasiano to move on, and still I’d prefer them over Woods.

A three-step plan for Aaron Woods to endear himself to Bulldogs fans

I wish they’d put neville in the top 6. Hes proven he can stop a collapse by batting time over and over but when the rest that follow average 17 and below there’s only so much he can do.

Wade isn’t test standard with the gloves or bat.

Australia won, but we must not paper over the cracks

For me, there is no issue. All players know drug testing can happen at anytime year round. A player who has already tested positive to illicit drugs once knows the consequences of he’s done again.

He had an opportunity to make cronulla his own as you’ve pointed out, but he made the decision to potentially throw it away. I don’t share your need for further information before reaching closure.

Why the Barba decision hurts

I thought Dave Taylor was on a train and trial deal at Canberra and definitely not a member of anyones spine.

Also surely warriors have thr best spine in the comp, with luke, Johnson, foran, Rts
