I may be on my own, but I think the disruption of origin brings makes the season much more interesting. It tests the depth of the high performing clubs and gives the opportunity for some upsets. Playing it at the end of the year was a flat kind of feeling to me.

NRL Round 13 talking points: Absolutely no one likes split rounds

Looking at the channel 9 promos for game 1, I’d say they were expecting addo-carr to be in the side as he is featured prominently and was one of the few that was filmed especially for the ad. Addo-Carr would have been fine if selected but so will Tupou. He is one of the most consistent wingers out there.

Daniel Tupou's message to dumped Josh Addo-Carr is pure class

Thats not fair comparison. Because saying “all sodas are terrible people” seems very much like he’s talking right at me. If he was to say “all roar commenters” or “all Twitter users” I think thats a better analogy. In that instance I don’t believe I would feel personally attacked because I get it. Some of them are faceless and nameless trolls. I have nothing against Danielle and actually rather enjoy her articles normally. I just think this one was unnecessary.

'You had to be a smartarse': Dear Paul Vaughan, just like NRL players not all journos are 'the worst people'

I don’t rate a lot of what Paul Vaughn has done up to this point but I think I excuse him for the outburst. Put it in context though, his coach and friend just “resigned”. The same coach who threw him a lifeline after all of his off field dramas you so gleefully dredged up. When confronted by the media, waiting like vultures, his outburst I think was understandable enough. It’s strange that you feel you need to write a piece like this. To me, it is quite a petty reaction to a pretty nothing incident.

Obstructions are a pretty embarrassing part of the game with the interpretations being so grey. Howlers like last night are a result of refs not calling obstruction as soon as they happen. I hate it when officials allow players to run an obvious obstruction and then give themselves up into a voluntary tackle because there is no “advantage”. By getting away with that there is a massive advantage to the attacking side which is they retain the ball and don’t get incur a penalty. When a team runs an obstruction play they should get pulled up on it. It’s an error. They are not allowed to get away with any other error by giving themselves up into a voluntary tackle. Imagine a player knocking the ball on and the just dropping to their knees to claim “no advantage”. IMO the penalty for an obstruction is pretty steep and may make refs hesitant to call them. I reckon if obstructions (especially the ones where the forwards overrun the play) should just be a handover. Perhaps the ref would be more prepared to make a quick call on it that way.

'I don’t get it': O'Brien bemused at bunker as Broncos avoid obstruction call to romp to victory

I’m curious TB, as a dog’s fan, when the Baz came on as coach, did you expect anything other than what has eventuated? I can’t imagine the fans saw Trent’s arrival as the dawning of a new age at the dogs.

MICHAEL HAGAN: Why more than just a new coach is needed to fix Dogs' breakfast

Parra need to win it this year if they are gonna win it. All that talent is moving out at the end of the year. As much as they were good last night they are still very much beatable by any other team in my opinion. They may well have played their grand final last night.

Can the Eels win the NRL title?

If roosters have a bad year they will probably come out of nowhere to secure Munster’s signature. Chooks never stay down for long.

Stop calling once-mighty Roosters heavyweights - they're now featherweights

Absolutely Red Rob. Your last paragraph sums it up perfectly.

MICHAEL HAGAN: Why this proud Queenslander thinks NRL grand final should stay in Sydney

Dragons scramble defence on their own line has been admirable but easy metres are to easily made through their middle to let teams march up the field. Having an old and slow dummy half is just not good enough in today’s game. If Macca was dropped for anyone quicker, that would be a step in the right direction. And I say that without any ill will toward Macca. He’s been a great player over his career. It’s just gone on 3 years too long

NRL Power Rankings: Raiders staring into abyss, a new team at top and are Dragons actually any good?

Born in 88 so first grand final I vividly remember is ’96 😡 😡 😡
2010 was pretty cool though remember that one? Anyone wanna talk about that one???

The Melbourne Storm players who never played representative football

C’mon man, No real need to bring up that dragons Melbourne game was there? It was hard enough reading about Craig Smith on the wing again!

The Melbourne Storm players who never played representative football

I agree. I expected Whighton to atleast get a 10 minute spell. It doesn’t help that when a ref makes a big call like the send off that channel 9 voices shout them down for having no feel for the game. “It was an accident, you can send off for an accident”. This ignores the rule and the whole point of a send off as a deterrent against dangerous tackles. The commentary at 9 needs to pump the breaks on outrage and actually consult the rule book.

NRL Round 8 talking points - there’s Penrith and Melbourne, then 50 feet of crap, then everyone else

Agree on Cody. He is a competitor for sure but he does try to get away with some pretty ordinary things out on the field.

'Which is a sending off and which is sin bin?': Lawton learns fate for dangerous tackle after Hasler questions send-off

Why?

Tradition be damned: It's time to take grand final away from Sydney to highest bidder

Is this about money or the people who support it, or is this simply to improve the bidding price and increase ratings?

It sounds like it’s for the money, improve the bidding price and increase the ratings, which is what you would want a business to do? Too long has rugby league been a great sport run like a chook raffle. I’m not the biggest pvl fan especially with his rule changes but on this I don’t mind.

Is V’landys jumping the shark?

Broncos beat sharks in an upset and the Fox’s journos are probably going to be like “I’m hearing whispers that voices are asking questions about Fitzgibbon’s future at the club”.

Walters plays down finals talk after Broncos second half shutout downs Sharks

To me it feels like almost every new “advance” in the rules has been about as well thought out as the introduction of the cane toad which is destroying the environment. I don’t know how this won’t be anything more than a howler producing machine especially when you consider that there is no general consensus on what constitutes a forward pass. Despite the simple name a pass that goes forward is not always a forward pass.

Experts Roar: Should NRL use ball-tracking technology to rule on forward passes?

Missing out on Ponga is a blessing in disguise. Who knows, be could have been great under Bennet but big money should not be given to potential.

Wayne's in for world of hurt if Dolphins can't sign marquee star: 'Missing Ponga is a big one'

Surely Dufty’s next contract will be in England somewhere. He’d probably carve it up there

Round 8 Questions: Should Foxx trot at fullback? Kevvie nervous? Schuster to six? Will Papi beat El Magic?

I wonder if ponga decided to go up to Redcliffe, how quickly scrutiny would have turned on to Coach O’Brien. I’m far from sold on him as a coach and agree that he has been lucky to avoid questioning regarding his future. Out of sydney, out of mind I guess.

'Small' NRL clubs may not get close calls, but their coaches don't get calls for their heads either

Tv commentary is really really bad. It used to be that you could switch from 9 to fox for better call and coverage. Nowadays, I find myself flipping back to 9, mostly to get away from Dan Ginane – I think he is a very ordinary caller and to me he’s a pain to listen to. Don’t know why he is the primary caller for the bigger games.

NRL Round 5 talking points: Streakers, streaks and strikes

The problem I have with the 6 again rule is the non-advantage to the attacking team/ opportunity for gamesmanship from the defenders to slow down the game. The 6 again is hardly a penalty for the defenders. It’s a risk they all are willing to take and the benefit of slowing down the ruck and resetting their line or being blatantly offside means they are better placed to defend an extra set. I don’t mind the 6 again but I would really appreciate it if the refs would occasionally blow a penalty for the more deliberate and cynical infringements. I think that’s all that’s needed to keep everyone honest and get the best out of the 6 again. At the very least, if there are two 6 agains in the same set. That should be an automatic penalty.
While I’m at it, my two biggest gripes at the moment is the when the refs call held too soon. As long as the players aren’t chair-lifting up and carrying them back or dragging someone who is on the ground, defenders should be entitled drive them back. I feel refs call held way to quick – I don’t know, may just be me? Second gripe. Passing after held vs passing off the ground. I don’t mind that passing after a held call is just called back for a play the ball, as sometimes the ball was offloaded at the same time held was called, or crowds would make it hard to tell if held was heard. A penalty for that did not seem fair. However lately Ive seen a lot of passes off the ground, well after a tackle was affected and the ball goes back just for a play the ball? To me that is poor discipline and is basically is the same as a double movement and should be penalised.

NRL coaches have defeated the set restart rule and the game is better for it

The only suggestion I really agree with here is the one about the taking back of tries and the refs call biasing the bunkers decision before it goes up.

As far as everything else, knowing the players actual wage and an nrl draft does not interest me. Another jersey is not that urgent a need either.

The six changes the NRL must implement
