The weather in Melbourne is whack. A sudden shower and you’re running the Melbourne Cup on a slow track.

These firm tracks are dangerous, please water them

Imagine if the Hawks still had them…

Enough about Buddy: Kennedy and McGlynn to lead Swans to premiership triumph

Both these guys have waited till the morning of the Brownlow to declare their counts. You’d think most of the value would have been sucked out by now. If Ablett gets up, these guys will not be turning up for work tomorrow.

2014 Brownlow Medal: Gary Ablett will hold on and win

Been looking forward to this all year Alfred but it might be this year I think your raw count will be much closer than your scaled count.

Selwood by 1 from Ablett for me.

2014 Brownlow Medal: Gary Ablett will hold on and win

This article has merit because it highlights the reactive nature of the racing industry. No one ever thinks anything can go wrong until it actually does. A lot of the dark events of recent racing history could have been avoided had there been people who were proactive in their thinking. If something can go wrong – it will in the racing industry. Its just a matter of time until someone figures out how. Fine Cotton could have been avoided if the current horse identification cards were required back then. The collapse of BC3 could have been avoided if proper credit control check were in place. The Damien Oliver betting scandal could have been avoided if someone had the balls ten years ago to imprison any jockeys who bet. If the industry was more proactive in finding loopholes in the system, we would have a much cleaner industry.

Should trainers be accountable for their comments to the media?

What about The Offer? The Sydney Cup win should carry a pretty hefty weight penalty from it.

The 2014 Melbourne Cup topweight conundrum

Good to see you in the red. That was long overdue. Well deserved Alfred.

One I’m probably most interested to watch is Kerrin McEvoy. He is the stable rider for Godolphin but he was Snowden’s stable rider. John O’Shae has already signaled his interest in James McDonald and I would not be surprised if McEvoy ends up freelancing by the end of the season.

Five jockeys to watch in 2014-15

I thought they were joking on Channel 7 when they said Buddy was a chance but it sounds like he actually is. I’m surprised that he has polled so well in the past because he is the type of player umpires hate. He always complains when he doesn’t get a free kick and he mouths off a lot. That said, I don’t think he will win it. Personally, I think 26 votes will be enough to win it this year because no one else is having a standout season. Stevie J and Selwood are stealing votes off each other, the Magpies are not winning enough games for Pendlebury to get the votes he needs and Dangerfield has chosen a shocking year to become inconsistent. If Ablett wins it with just 15 games next to his name, that has to be some sort of record right?

2014 Brownlow: Ablett can still win

$3 is great value!

2014 Brownlow Medal: Ablett’s to lose

The improvements of guys like Swallow and Prestia have made Ablett a better player. He may be 30 but he’s been getting better each year he has been at the Suns which is kind of scary. Last year he had a few quiet weeks mid-season because his body was getting tired of carrying the team but he’s been spending more time up forward, kicking a lot more goals and still somehow getting 30+ touches each week. $3 is great value!

2014 Brownlow Medal: Ablett’s to lose

Good morning Alfred. Interesting topic as always.

I’ve been thinking about the question you pose following the developments of Tony Vasil and John Saddler and I have a theory. Training horses is not just about training winners but it is equally, if not more important, to train as few losers as possible. Because that’s where the pressure comes from. Owners who get dud horses need to hold someone accountable for their poor investment and that is going to be the trainer.

What O’Shea gets with Darley is limitless patience because the Sheikh doesn’t care about the losers and he’ll never ask O’Shea why a certain horse isn’t winning. If it’s a well bred male, it will be sold for some pocket change and if its a well bred mare, off to the barn with no questions asked.

But when a trainer has to answer so many different owners and probably repeat the exact same line – DON’T EVER EXPECT TO MAKE MONEY FROM OWNING A HORSE – the job can get quite depressing. If Snowden had to account himself to 309 different trainers and only had 15 Group horses, he’d have gone insane a long time ago. From that point of view, I can understand why any trainer would jump at the opportunity of training for just one man.

Darley no glamour job for John O’Shea

Chester is the circle tack right?

The WR might have been G2 quality but I think Fontelina will kick on. I read the owners are considering Royal Ascot with him and Villa Verde. Fontelina has always looked a better horse down a straight so Ascot could be right up his alley. His improvement has been consistent and now that he’s hitting his straps, I think he’s not far from a G1.

As for the rest of the lot, Samaready’s Moir run is the equivalent of Bel Sprinter’s Galaxy run – one and done.

Does entitlement exist in horse racing?

This is what happens when we have more than anyone else in the world (except the US). Just look at Dunaden. Never even come close in a European G1 but wins the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups with ease.

Does entitlement exist in horse racing?

I was glad to see Buffering and SOB win G1s but that fact that both couldn’t do it till they got to MV shows how bad of a track it is. The best horses don’t win at MV. It’s just about who handles it the best.

Does entitlement exist in horse racing?

Haha. I opened this just to see what you could come up with for Z and you nailed it.

An A-Z guide of the most annoying things in sport

Horror season but they know it. They’re preparing for the Summer of Love. They can offer Melo more than anyone else in the league and will clear almost $100m in cap space next year when they let STAT and Bargs go. Melo and Love will play out their careers at MSG. It’s going to be awesome. Hardaway is a gun. JR Smith can gtfo.

The NAB cup should be played overseas. Like, the whole comp. No one here cares about it. Just televise it and showcase the game to a new audience.

NAB Challenge needs to take an all-regional approach

Alfred, I think I recall you writing a similar article about the Oaks. You really don’t like these 3yo staying races huh?

I’m guessing you’ve never owned a horse because if you have a shot at winning $1 million, you would take it every day of the week.

Cox Plate 2013: Individual horse analysis, preview and tips

I have money on a tie haha. Will be very nervous if one vote seperates Ablett, Pendlebury or Selwood in the final round. All can poll 1, 2 or 3.

Gary Ablett will win tonight's Brownlow Medal - here's why

Best bet – Dimetriou will have no idea how to pronounce “Vlastuin”.

Gary Ablett will win tonight's Brownlow Medal - here's why

This is absolute truth and should be nestled in the rules of punting just under “never bet when drunk”.

The Roar’s 2013 Spring Carnival predictions: majors

I don’t understand why people out there pay for tipping services when The Roar have excellent analysis and gives us the winner every weekend. Glad to have got on Veyron at $26. Thanks.

2013 Warwick Stakes: Horse racing preview, live blog, tips

The re-emergence of Australian weight-for-age horses – While Dundeel and Super Cool are genuine WFA horses, I can’t see too many behind them. Maybe Hawkspur or Royal Descent. I think it will be another small field for the Mackinnon Stakes.

No more tubing – I’ll give this till maybe December. There’s bound to be one dumbass country trainer who can’t resist the ugre on race day.

The next big thing! – Atlantic Jewel looks golden based on the photos of her from yesterday. Watch her go Memsie – Dato Tan – Underwood – Cox Plate unbeaten.

Zero tolerance to jockeys who bet – Who is Ivan Pavlov? Again, there will be some dumbass country jockey who can’t resist the urge. Again, I’ll give this till December.

A win in Hong Kong – The Aussie horses are flat after the spring. Unless a horse has Hong Kong set as their final race, it proabably won’t happen.

New horse-year’s resolutions

If the same Orfevre as last year turns up, he wins comfortably. He would be defending his title this year if he wasn’t given such a bad ride from the outset last year.
