Well said TO. I also think what hasn’t helped player standards is the poor standard of coaching. Bellamy, Robinson and Bennett can take other clubs rejects and turn them into quality first graders, just goes to show that a quality coach can improve players.
The new Brisbane team will have a good coach in Bennett

BREAKING: NRL to forge ahead with 17th team in 2023

I think back in the day the great Zinzan Brooke started off in the NZ 7’s before he played for the AB’s. He certainly honed his skills in 7’s

Springboks superstar becomes rugby's most expensive signing

I’ll also add that during the last RLPA Enterprise Bargaining Agreement negotiations with the NRL the RLPA spoke loud and clear that the players want to be considered “partners” of the game.
With that responsibility they should act professionally and not damage the game they want to be partners of because they are only going to dilute their earnings if they misbehave.

Give a young man lots of money and free time and you can create a very stupid young man

I agree RR. I don’t know why people keep suggesting league back rowers would be international class rugby backs.
Sure, Sonny Bill was a success but haven’t we learnt from previous league converts like Tepai Moeroa , Sam Harris, Sam Burgess etc??

Crichton is as league as a Raudonikis squirrel grip, but Wallabies can borrow him for RWC

David Pocock was the most inspirational (and best player) rugby player of the last 10 years from Australia. GET IT RIGHT next time mbp!!!

Take that Clive! Folau going back to Union in stunning twist

Hang on a minute. Didn’t Issy refuse to return to Catalans because he needed to be near his sick mother????
Is his mother living in Japan ?????

Take that Clive! Folau going back to Union in stunning twist

Thanks for the write up SBP. I didn’t get a chance to watch the game but I’m going to watch the replay on Kayo now

The stalemate that rugby league purists had been yearning for

Hi Brett. Looking afar from chilly Canberra , if the powerful and selfish Sydney clubs don’t want to support 2 Sydney teams in the NPV, why doesn’t RA invite Twiggy Forrest to enter 3 or 4 WA teams. Surely Twiggy would jump at the chance to contract the best of the Sydney club players and up and coming Waratahs to play for say his very own Country WA, North Perth, East Perth and South Perth teams. Twiggy has the cash to pay contracts, accomodation, travel fees etc. Win win situation for Twiggy and an Australian NPC style competition. Tongue in cheek….

The coaches want it, and now it seems RA’s appetite for the NRC might be growing

Why not have both Turbo, Teddy and Latrell in the team! Teddy at fullback, Turbo is a fantastic winger and will have more freedom to “pop up” anywhere on the field than at centre and Latrell has proven in the past that he is one of the best centres going around.

Teddy versus Turbo: Who will be No.1 for the Blues?

Correct JC. I remember reading an article where Thorn said Robbie Deans had to teach him the intricacies of line out jumping. If I remember correctly RD made Thorn stand on a fence post and leap in the air to catch a “line out” throw and land back on top of he fence post.
Rugby League didn’t teach Thorn the skills of line outs, mauls, rucks etc. Rugby Union taught him.

Why Jordan Petaia can be a better rugby player than Israel Folau

Hi Nic. I agree that the Wallabies can’t afford to have talented players not getting game time. The last couple of years I’ve been frustrated by punters commenting that there’s not enough talent to fill 5 Australian Super Rugby teams!!!!!

Coach's Corner Issue 7: What position for Petaia?

I agree Don. David Klemmer is a classic example of a forward with mongrel in him and it’s no coincidence that the Saifiti brothers have thrived with the example Klemmer set when he went to the Knights.

The Broncos must make radical changes, starting with Milford

I think it’s a bit of fun. Like others, I don’t care about your opinions on this article. As someone who’s played both league and union, I regularly think about which league players would be good union players and vice versa which is why I enjoyed reading this post.

My NRL first XV to take on union in a crossover game

Nic I don’t recall the AB’s doing that but I do remember the NRL Parramatta coach Brian Smith doing that with his assistant coaches. Despite his Parramatta team having statistically one of the greatest seasons ever, unfortunately Brian took things too far, over complicated tactics and training so much that his players froze on Grand Final night and I think it was Newcastle whom comfortable defeated them.

Why sevens (and five) do go into six

Great article Nic, keep them coming.
I remember the great Aussie hockey coach Ric Charlesworth used to make his players play in different positions in friendly/minor international games so they could learn new skills and when they returned to their specialist positions they were much better players.
I also remember “back in the day” a promising Kiwi sevens player who transitioned to an All Black 15’s player successfully = Zinzan Brooke.

Why sevens (and five) do go into six

I definitely agree. I read so many stories and comments about the NSW Rugby Union not standing up to the “all powerful” Shute Shield teams/not embracing the NRC. In my humble and uneducated opinion I think the ACT RU and QLD RU have shown the benefits of using the NRC to develop the next generation of players and coaches. Keep up the great posts Geoff!!!!

The Wrap: 153 reasons why Waratahs coach Rob Penney must be left alone

Nice article Geoff. It’s quite an eye opener to see how many players are plying their trade “over seas”. I think Oz rugby is stuck with this situation and have to accept the fact that there will always be a player drain. I suggest that RA need to invest more in coaching structures to improve talent identification and pathways for up and coming players with the aim of increasing the production line of next generation players. To all the Waratahs and Reds fans that constantly complain about losing their former junior players to the Brumbies, Force and Rebels, I’d prefer these players stay in the Australian Super Rugby system because if we revert back to just the Waratahs and Reds these “unwanted” players will just move to OS clubs. Go the Brumbies

The Wrap: 153 reasons why Waratahs coach Rob Penney must be left alone

Yes Nic. I recall numerous other players whom didn’t get a run in their home state because they were stuck behind established internationals so they came to the Brumbies and flourished. Adam Frieir (Phil Kearns), Sam Cordingly, Dave Griffin (John Eales/Rod McCall), Graeme Bond/Mark Gerard/Mitch Hardy, Adam Magro.

Battle of the blindside enforcers: Why the power lies in Canberra

I’m a Brumbies supporter and I acknowledge that a very large factor of their success has been from unwanted former Qld and NSW rejects/misfits etc. What I would like to point out is that the Brumbies have a proud history of developing local players and coaches. I played first grade for the mighty Queanbeyan Whites from 1991-1995 (pre Brumbies days) and I got to play against a bunch of local produced players including Lord Laurie, Gregan, Larkham, Roff, Kafer, Caputo, Didier, Justin Harrison etc. In later years the next batch of ACT locally produced players came along including the Fainga’a twins, Matt Henjak etc. The Canberra/Queanbeyan region has punched above its weight producing home grown Brumbies and Wallabies.

Battle of the blindside enforcers: Why the power lies in Canberra

Hi Nat. In answer to your question “If the Broncos are subject to the same player limits and cap as every other team, what is the benefit of a one-team town?”
I think one massive advantage (pre 2020 Covid impacted season) is that the TV broadcasters demanded and got a Broncos home game every second Friday/Saturday night to maximise their viewer ratings. This was a massive advantage the Broncos had for many a year because they constantly had a 7 day break between games. A lot of other teams had shorter turnaround between games which was a disadvantage. There was even a case when magic round was held in Brisbane and this round was listed in the drawer as an away game for the Broncos.
The other advantage the Broncos receive of being the only Brisbane team is that no competition from a second Brisbane team in “player managers” attracting third party sponsors for their players.

The Brisbane Broncos have too much talent to come dead last in 2021

Great read Nic. I think what’s vitally important to McKayy’s attacking strategies are the onfield “generals” that have to implement them. James O’Connor and his teammates, take a bow

Why Jim McKay is the best attack coach in Australian rugby

Well said OOP. You forgot to mention that he was asked to be the Wallabies forwards coach (because he is the best forwards coach involved in Oz Super Rugby-apologies Lord Laurie Fisher)

Is Brad Thorn our next Wallabies coach?

I’m a Brumbies fan but I just have this feeling that the Reds have enough improvement in them that comes with relatively young players that have had a couple of years experience. Don’t discount the negative impact that Liam Wright’s injury absence will make. There was an excellent analysis piece on the Roar recently that explained how much better the Reds defence was with Wright at 6. When Wright was defending/playing 7 Scott-Young was found out defensively defending in the 6 position.

The Roar's Super Rugby AU season preview: Queensland Reds

I remember footage of him playing for the Storm , when he was running the ball back from his goal line from a long kick he launched himself into the air at the defenders with a flying kick/knee. At the time I thought this guy has a very aggressive attitude and looks like he wants to hurt someone.
Sure it might have been just “allegedly pushing” but it seems like he has to control his aggressive streak .

Star signing Suliasi Vunivalu stood down by Reds for off-field incident

Brett I agree with you there. I also think what’s forgotten in this whole topic are the “unofficial” captains or leaders in the teams. The player responsible for line out calls and tactics, what scrum moves to do etc. As a Brumbies fan from day 1 I always respected the tactical impact that Rod Kafer had on the Brumbies (and on the Wallabies in his first test). Also I put it out there that George Gregan was a more effective player when he wasn’t team captain because he had less responsibility and could concentrate on his core skills and marshalling the forwards. I think the team that has the best set of “unofficial” captains and leaders that support the team captain will have the most success.

Old heads to lead the way in Super Rugby AU
