I guess it doesn’t have to be spectacular. It just has to be respectful to football, its traditions and the players, past and present.

APL's spin doctoring insults Australian football fans' intelligence - and might well be the last straw

APL's spin doctoring insults Australian football fans' intelligence - and might well be the last straw

Grem, it has always been thus in Victoria. The AFL protects it’s ‘product’ and is reluctant to give way to football, which it has always seen as a threat. It is this way now, it will always be this way. The AFL has been masterful and successful in cultivating grass roots and political support.

Crickets from the APL. It’s way toooo embarassing because the smart business people on the board were asleep at the wheel while Danny was spending like there was no tomorrow.

I remember. They were dark days. Seven ran replays late at night and surprisingly nobody watched. Lolz

They don’t like criticism. They like pats on the back and people saying they’re doing a great job. That’s exactly how incompetent managers behave.

They are business gurus and they were sold a lie? They got conned?

They can’t be that smart if they didn’t do their homework. Simple as that I’m afraid.

Hi Mike, try to interview an APL board member and let us know how you get on. Cheers

Not Victoria because the FA couldn’t negotiate a deal with the AFL to make the MCG and Docklands available. Seems a familiar story – again.

You can’t kill grass roots football in Australia. The game has an attraction, a simplicity that can withstand ill winds.

But you can kill the professional game through incompetent management. We’ve seen this movie before.

The latest bungles involving the APL and its departed CEO Danny Townsend happened right under the noses of the very APL board members that were assuring us of a bright new future. Silver Lake sit on the board, Pearce Melb City/CFG, Barlow SFC, Lederer WSW, Fong Roar.

These guys don’t give a toss about fans. They think they are business gurus. Pearce holds City fans in contempt. He doesn’t communicate but sits somewhere in a CFG bunker.

As for the actual football ⚽ in the A-leagues, can’t complain, the players have been putting on a geat show 👍

Hi JSF, I have many other things occupying my mind at the moment so missing this midweek game is probably not surprising, like, who associates the A-league with mid-week games anyway? Note to self “try harder son!” 😂

Forget those bringing down the game, what if we embraced the A-League and Australian football cups are actually half-full?

Hahahahahaha, was there a game on tonight? Who knew 😢 😢 😢

Forget those bringing down the game, what if we embraced the A-League and Australian football cups are actually half-full?

Thanks. I’m seriously intending to go and have a sticky beak to see what it looks like. I might paste some comments on this site if I eventually go.

How can the APL convince casual fans the A-League Men is worth supporting?

Pete4, have you been down to see it?

How can the APL convince casual fans the A-League Men is worth supporting?

OK, according to stats on the Ultimate A-league site, highest A-league regular season average crowd was 15,348 in 2007/08 in an 8 team competition. Highest number of people through the turnstiles in the regular season was 1,758,440 in 2013/14 in a 10 team competition.

This season we’re on track for an average crowd of just over 8k and an attendance of 1,300,000+

The domestic competition has been dropping support for years, it hasn’t just happened or been caused by Covid. It’s a systematic failure to engage the punters at all levels.

Let me give you one simple example. I raised the Fans Representative Group (FRG) with my fellow City supporters. I pointed to Glory, Sydney FC and CCM who had posted updates about FRG meetings on their websites. Heck, even the aleagues website has minutes of meetings. Then I asked well what about Melbourne City FC? One of my fellow supporters rang City’s office and couldn’t get any information about what the club was doing re FRG. No information on our website. Even though Simon Pearce, Vice Chairman of Melbourne City FC, sits on the APL board 😱 😱

Yes, minutes available via the aleagues websites shows City attending meetings but the club has ‘never’ communicated what’s been going on to the greater membership, as far as I’ve seen.

A-Leagues Fan Representative Group | Meeting Minutes

The A-league is a competition run by suits as a business. It was not an idea that started at the grass roots. It needs to have fans directly involved in shaping its future. Engagement. Or we’ll just have another NSL type failure.

A lazy 8-0 to the City bois hey 👍 ⚽ ⚽

The Roar's A-League Men tips and predictions: Round 24 - Sydney Derby takes centre stage and urgency for finals hopefuls

Nice article
https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2024/apr/10/nestory-irankunda-having-agency-over-his-future-is-a-good-thing-for-australian-football

Oh dear, a lot of huffing and puffing from clubs and a somewhat own goal by our U23 management. Why ‘sound him out’ when you’d originally made the decision to leave him out? Doesn’t this only muddy the waters? Like it just did 😱 FFS 😔

On a brighter note, it’s better to be talked about than to be ignored! Well maybe the Melb Derby Sand-Bucket-Gate affair is an exception to this otherwise water tight rule 😂

A-League clubs air grievances after Nestory Irankunda's shock snubbing of Olyroos duty

People ask me if I follow the EPL. I say NO. I have no warm feelings towards any team over there EXCEPT I like to follow how the Aussies are doing like Ange and in the past Mooy, and way back, Dukes, H. All I care about is how Australian football is going and seeing Australians killing it home and abroad. Call me one-eyed, so be it 😊

Thanks for the round-up David, another very interesting round in the greatest little football league in the whole ruddy world 👍

I’m loving Mariners and Nux dog fighting for top position. Both have shown that you don’t need all the money in the world (sorry City, you’re dead to me 😢 ) to be top dogs in our league. A decent advert for financial caps.

The Melb derby drew just over 20,000 which is good but not where we were pre-Covid – anyway, OK. Mariners v Nux drew just under 10,000. Pretty good. NoMates predictions: CCM 0 vs 2 WEL Crowd 4k, MVC 2 vs 2 MCY Crowd 7k 😂 😂 😂 👎 👎 👎

What can you say about Rudan??? Just doesn’t cut it does he? Needs to go and see a shrink.

Tarneit. An old fashioned suburban style ground hoping to be a grown-up stadium some time in the future. I doubt it will grow too much beyond its current size but hey, A-league stadiums holding 10-15 k would be decent and would create a great atmosphere when full-ish.

City FC X account says “Aurelio Vidmar is tracking well in his recovery from illness but remains home tonight.” Hope your recovery is full and speedy 👍
