It’ll be interesting to see what approach we take with Egypt. We play best when we take the initiative from the outset, like against Argentina. But there will be a lot of tired bodies, and I remember us being considerably fragile in defence when we took an attacking mindset against Peru at the 2018 WC.

We’re in a better position now at least, so I can see us being aggressive in defence but patient in attack (if the Egyptians let us, that is)..

Huge effort, but there was no real Plan B against Spain's A-Team

Glad someone gave Arzani a wrap. He was copping a bit of unfair criticism after the game, but that first half performance was in no small part down to his quick footwork. Through passing needs to be tighter, especially if Spain shut down that space we were able to work in against the Argies. Maybe he swaps places with Tilio just to keep the energy level high.

'Tonight we shocked the world': How Arnie's Olyroos rocked Argentina

It’s a nice position to be in, where we can’t decide on who should start but for positive reasons! You could put the same starting side out again, assuming they recover, and be confident they’ll put in another solid 1st half. Or you could swap Arzani with Tilio, Genreau with Watts and be equally confident.

Looking back at the highlights, it’s hard to tell how good we were vs how bad Argentina were. We were very quick moving it out wide, but Argentina looked strangely lethargic, so expect that space to disappear against Spain. We’ll need the likes of Arzani, Tilio and Genreau to turn on the creativity to break them down.

Yeah I might just be overexaggerating a couple of moments. Kicking the ball out on the full after a huge slog defending on the goal line was a coach killer; he’s always on the verge of giving away a penalty in defence; plus I’m sure there were a few questionable moments in attack. But it’s all against this impossibly high standard we set for him. He’s basically the new Wally for Qlders now…

Origin is hard, a sweep is harder: seven talking points for State of Origin 2021

Was it just me, or was Munster an absolute liability that game? Had to be his worst game in maroon, but offset by Hunt and Ponga being on fire.

It just shows the absolute importance of a strike weapon at fullback at this level. Val Holmes has never played that role. Corey Allan shouldn’t have been able to cut it last year either, but he was riding high of confidence at least.

'Why play like that now?': Maroons face brutal question after stirring end to miserable series

Yep, as far as I’m concerned, NSW have always been able to field 3 teams that could beat Qld, and Qld have always been a couple of key injuries away from a flogging. But take some of that club chemistry out of the blues and bring in a gamechanger at fullback for the maroons and it suddenly looks winnable again.

Hunt will be a quiet achiever at hooker too IMO. It’s a good thing he doesn’t have any drinking buddies at the dragons!

Hammer time: Queensland make multiple changes for Game 3

I like Hammer and want him to do well, but it’s a bit weird seeing him picked ahead of two backs from a team that just smoked his team 38-0, not to mention Opacic who’s been doing a decent job for one of the form clubs. It really looks like Green picking his old club favourites again.

Lindsay Collins is a big miss, he’s about the best worker Qld has right now. They could also do with the likes of Horsburgh, Carrigan and Flegler staying fit to add competition in the pack.

In the backline, some positions have better depth than others, but when hasn’t that been the case. Even in the golden years, they lose GI and suddenly they’re picking Dane Nielsen or Justin O’Neill at centre. Guys like Corey Allan or Oates are fairly young, big guys who could put in a shift there, if they didn’t play for teams where good form goes to die.

Hammer time: Queensland make multiple changes for Game 3

It’s more newsworthy than most of the names (at this stage you just expect Corey Norman to be among them). But also, regardless of the outcome of the trial, you’d think he’d want to do some public image repairs and prove how much of a good guy he is.

'What are these peanuts doing?': Full list of shamed Dragons' fines, bans

As is Reed. Not saying there aren’t options on a good day, but for Wayne to make these comments now, in the worst case scenario Qld are in, just seems like a cheap shot.

Now they know how bare the cupboard can get, Qld clubs need to get better at promoting Qld Cup talent and not load their squads with journeymen kiwis and NSWmen.

Bennett wants Queensland to look to future

Haven’t they been doing that already? Had a look at the squads for this round and struggled to find 30 Qlders in the entire league. There simply isn’t a young Cameron Smith to bring in right now. It’s McCullough, Hunt, or 24 year old Jake Turpin from the Broncos.

Bennett wants Queensland to look to future

To be honest I think they’re overrated in our setup. They always seem to go missing while makeshift strikers like Boyle and Leckie go looking for the ball and add nuisance value. Give wingers the start IMO, and then bring on Jmac and Taggart later on when the defence is tiring.

World Cup draw yields plenty of familiar faces for the Socceroos

Surely Atkinson has moved above Grant in the pecking order. Souttar and McGree will keep their spots too. And he’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but Arzani was a shining light in those pretty average Olyroos friendlies so I’d like to see him get his career back on track and get another shot at senior level.

Interesting thing I’ve noticed about the China squad is they’ve naturalised some of their expensive Brazilian and European imports. They aren’t spring chickens and not quite at the Hulk or Oscar level, but it’ll be interesting to see what new dimensions they bring to China’s game.

Ok probably a bad example, he was only used off the bench by then anyway, but still only scored once in that final round of regular qualifiers. Jedi and Milligan were mainstays though and very slow in the middle of the pitch. I think our depth in the middle and front is (slightly) better than what it was back then, and nobody can expect to start which can only be a good thing.

World Cup draw yields plenty of familiar faces for the Socceroos

Familiar faces, but I’m not too bothered by this group. I think last time our veteran incumbents like Cahill, Jedi and Milligan got a bit too comfortable. There was no expectation they’d be dropped and they put up some pretty underwhelming performances, particularly towards the end of the regular qualifiers. Now we have genuine competition across the pitch, plus Ange’s class of 2014 reaching their peak years.

World Cup draw yields plenty of familiar faces for the Socceroos

I think we dodged a bullet by not being in Group A. 5 middle eastern teams and we’ll most likely be playing in middle eastern hubs again. That said, we did quite well in the hub format – it’s preferable to having players struggling to acclimatise in a weekend away from their comfortable European and Australian homes – but I’m glad we won’t be playing so many teams twice in their own backyard.

World Cup draw yields plenty of familiar faces for the Socceroos

Yep, it’s hard to tell just how far apart these teams are. The effort was clearly there for Qld, but don’t think they tried anything resembling an attacking set piece, just pointless passing out wide and high kicks. If they had a competent coach and some proper attacking drills they might’ve threatened.

Six talking points from State of Origin Game 2

Very courageous of Qld to keep the same backline from their drubbing in Game 1. That’s loyalty for you!

Mulitalo OUT of Origin II over eligibility concerns, Coates back in

I’m a Cowboys fan so I know what he can do there, but the fact is he’s merely a competent club FB who’s much better suited to another position at rep level. He won’t win you an origin, but like you say, he’s a safer way to lose one. Like if NSW put Stephen Crichton at FB.

Five changes plus shock debutant in Maroons Game 2 team

Yep, next best option was moving Munster to FB, and moving the problem to 5/8!

Five changes plus shock debutant in Maroons Game 2 team

In his defence he didn’t do a whole lot wrong. Addo-Carr didn’t score. And Tom’s tries were from errors further in-field, including one from the other side. So that side with Gagai and Feldt did ‘reasonably’ well, compared to the other…

Five changes plus shock debutant in Maroons Game 2 team

If NSW picked a 18 yo with 7 games in any position, something would’ve gone horribly wrong with their player depth. Qld don’t have that luxury at the best of times, let alone with this current injury toll…
