Sydney-sider who's progressively gotten more into sports as I've gotten older - only part of the Daily Telegraph worth reading

I actually think the Steelers are perfeectly fine with okay to bad QB play this year – apparently next year’s draft class is loaded with QB talent, so a high draft pick suits them just fine.
Pittsburgh Steelers 2022-23 season preview: Watt should we think of Pittsburgh?
For mine, the Rams’ biggest vulnerability is their lack of depth: their approach means they sign up very good players, but don’t have the draft capital to pick up good players on rookie deals, and therefore have more average players in their starting line up than other teams. That’s okay if your stars remain healthy like they did for much of last yerar, but it’s bigger trouble than normal if they don’t.
Los Angeles Rams 2022-23 season preview: Super Bowl defence incoming
I’d like to start following the Vikings more closely: over the last few years I and my sons have independently sort of started following the NFL, and have ended up picking different teams. I’m a 49er, my oldest is following the Ravens and my middle son – poor soul – picked the Vikings. I feel like I have a reasonable handle on them because I’m a fan of Tom Grossi, who – as a Packers fan – has a lot of opinions about the Vikings (and not unreasonable ones either, which is why I like the guy so much)
Minnesota Vikings 2022-23 season preview: Captain Kirk to successfully steer the ship?
Last year SF were relying on Verrett and Moseley at cornerback, with a lot of not much behind them: both of those guys got injured and they were lucky to get away with playing Travis Benjamin as often as they did. Their depth is much better this year: Moseley looks healthy and they signed Charvarius Ward as pretty much their only “big” free agent signing. Lenoir is still in the mix but with a year’s more development, as is Ambry Thomas, who got better through the year. They’ve also re-signed Verrett on a minimum wage deal, so if he’s able to recapture some of his pre-ACL injury form, that’ll be a bonus. Their only real question on defence is maybe the interior defence – they’re hoping that Javon Kinlaw will finally reach his potential after having his knee repaired, but Arik Armstead has just picked up an injury, so the question is whether they’ll be able to stop the run.
San Francisco 49ers 2022/23 season preview: Lance-Alot of wins coming?
Actually, I think it’s their O-line which is their greatest vulnerability: apart from losing Tomlinson, they also lost Mack to retirement and McGlinchey is coming back from a major injury. Brunskill is a much better swing tackle than starter in the O-line, so they’re relying heavily on good play from a lot of rookies (Burford) or near rookies (Banks), although I do think Brundel will be fine at Centre, since he played on the scout team last year with Lance. Trent Williams is an absolute star, but he can’t do it by himself.

Sydney had COLA because it was more expensive to live here – not that clubs in other states were given a cost of living penalty, not even after COLA was taken away from the Swans. If other clubs want to contribute as much to the Academy as the Swans do, they’d be welcome to take picks on the same basis. Franklin’s deal was perfectly within the rules the AFL had at the time – and yet Sydney are the ones who get hit with a trade ban? Adam Goodes’ treatment in his last 2 years of football was disgraceful, although to be fair, that might have been the same even if he had played for a Victorian club.

Thanks for the relevant comment – Cristiano Ronaldo falling down with barely any contact not attracting any sort of warning is the sort of thing I’m referring to here. What do you see is being done to eliminate that sort of behaviour?

Are you seriously saying that removing diving would not make the game better? That it’s such a fundamental part of soccer that eliminating it would change its essence and reduce its popularity with the people who already love the game?
Save your vitriol for suggestions that deserve it, like getting rid of the off side rule, because otherwise you’re just hanging yourself out on your prejudices and victim mindset.

For someone who claims to be aware of the flaw in their sport, you’re awfully defensive about them. Would it be true to say that you’re also one of those people who believe that soccer is properly called “football” everywhere by everyone?
It’s attitudes like yours that annoys people such as myself, who are in between – my sons play soccer, I attend their weekend games, I’ve been to the refereeing course, I’ve been team manager and RTO (but not coach – don’t know enough about the mechanics of the game), so I am no way a once in 4 years type of person, but while I like Sydney FC and have been to few games, I don’t really follow them that closely and I don’t get up in the middle of the night to watch any EPL or BPL or BVC or whatever it is they’re calling it nowadays.
I like most sports: I like the athleticism and skill involved, the competitiveness, the passion, the energy.
I would love soccer more if it dealt with this issue more seriously. The reward of going down at the slightest contact has always outweighed the cost, so players keep doing it unless they have other reasons – like the Australians’ cultural self identity – to not do it. VAR means the game n ow has the opportunity to see it and do something about it – I disagree with the severity of some proposals here, I think a warning for the first instance and then a yellow for subsequent instances would work fine, but it needs the game to want to do something about it, rather than just accept it.

Correction: Travis Benjamin was the wide receiver who was also not very good… Josh Norman was the guy whose only asset was his ability to punch the ball out of the receiver’s hands.
