Representing both sides of the Tasman: Why Des Connor is the greatest Australian halfback

Good post scrum. Just a thought, many Kiwis accepted the 73 match and try as being great rugby, also the try from “the end of the world” and the Bastille day loss in 78 were also praised and accepted. But with a more regulated society today and social media, have people today become greater whingers who are not so accepting of errors etc?

There's no way rugby's 'greatest ever try' would be permitted these days

They’re not very bright Sheek, too willing to accept what they see on TV and not think. They do whatever they are told to do. Sometimes you need to fight back which is what the farmers are doing in Europe, which most would not know a thing about. What does that have to do with sport? The enjoyment in sport has been overtaken by the almighty dollar and those who want to regulate the hell out of everything.

Yes, it was the unique abilities of the Baabaas players who created the try. Phil Bennett started it with those sidesteps , if it had been kicked to someone like a Grant Fox he would have kicked it into touch, sorry Foxy!
Mind you the “end of the world” try in 78 is fondly remembered.

Good points woodart. Why else did the NRL go to Vegas?

Richard you are correct, my apologies to Bill and Cliff.

Whereas the English were the opposite.
Lots of rules and regs which the pedantic English loved?

Maybe it was one of those dummies where intent was used rather than an obvious physical pretend to pass was made?

OM Was there a more laissez-faire attitude back then because money was not involved? And/or is our compliancy attitude in society relected in sport?

Hi USrugger
If you go through them individually most lived to the expected age for males, in their late seventies. It was only Lomu and van der Westhuizen who died young from illness and Jerry Collins who died in an accident. No one made it to late eighties or nineties which may say something about the physical strain on their bodies?

The game they play in heaven: A 'Dream XV' made up of unforgettable players

Jerry Collins seemed quite the character, not afraid to just be himself.

Thanks, he died very young, only 39. The full SA version of this would be a great team.

Yes probably Ray, or Carwyn James?

Still alive I believe.

I might have to select a team for them to play.

Yes, he came close but Duckham could play both wings, not sure about Dominic.

You have given me an idea BF

What would that be Brian?

Thank you Khun Phil. It all adds spice to inter Tasman relations! Greg Chappell and Trev will forever be remembered for the underarm to Kiwis, but they were obviously much more than that. Forgive and forget? Nah, got to have some controversy!

Thank you TCFB

Muzzo, I think the haka quote was said more in jest than anything. I believe he was an “enforcer” in the respect of being someone who would put a stop to any rough play from the opposition.

Yes m, rugby can leave a few scars!

It would be great for Australian rugby to have those days of heroes, stars in the game today.
