I think Shiel is a very good midfielder and Merritt is virtually elite. He just isn’t the same size as those mentioned. But if you add McGrath and Heppel it’s good enough. Langford got better last year, Smith will be back to his best and Stringer looks much fitter to pinch hit in the middle. Caldwell will be a beauty too. If theres a proper game plan the Bombers will do ok in 2021.

How secure is every AFL coach?

Totally agree with everything you said except….if Truck doesn’t develop an actual game plan, them the quality of the list will be irrelevant because last year it was go sideways, backwards, clueless anywhere but going for a goal. The players had no idea and neither did the fans. Especially disastrous considering the Bombers had the 2 best attacking back men in the league and still played that shocking game style. Let’s hope for better this year.

How secure is every AFL coach?

I dont think tge list has changed that much from the one that made finals the year before. So I dont expect them to finish bottom 4. Their defence has 2 aging stars but with guys like Ridley coming through id say their defence, on paper, is very good. As I mentioned apart from Saad they really didn’t lose any playing players. Although Worsfold was the coach, the entire game plan and strategy last year was Ruttens and it was a basket case.
He needs to come up with something fast or the Bombers, even if they get a great list, will be going nowhere.

How secure is every AFL coach?

Mostly agree except for Rutten. He coached that inept, chaotic, non functioning style he called a game plan. If it continues he needs to go. The Bombers only really lost 1 playing player, great as he was and had a terrible year for injuries. If the injuries are a normal year and the Bombers still go backwards despite the recruits, his head will be on the guillotine.

How secure is every AFL coach?

Don’t agree. Look at Danihers 2017 season. For a young kid he was as good as they come. Everyone predicted he would be in the top 5 players on the game within 12 months. Unfortunately his body let him down.
Even go back to Anzac day last year. He was awesome. If he is fit….Brisbane stay top 4.

What is Nathan Buckley's pass mark in 2021?

Noone is suggesting that its unfair. Thats a ridiculous assertion. My point was simply that the weather helped their style of play perfectly, just as it would have if they played the Eagles etc. But IMO, if it was dry, Richmond wouldn’t have win either game

My predictions for the 2021 AFL season

But they really weren’t. Port had them. A late lucky goal before half time in the GF kept Richmond in that game too. And you could not get 2 teams whose style is terrible for wet weather. In dry conditions Port woiks have run over the Tiger and Geelong would have kicked and marked their way to victory

Trade and draft review: Power recharge

Didn’t say they were going nowhere. Simply my view of the finals. I thought Port were the better team, they just lacked finishing and the wet weather didn’t help their style. Whereas Richmond have a ‘move ball on at all cost’ style which is wet weather. Same for the GF, Geelong had clas on every line but the conditions didn’t suit them at all with their marking and possession style. We will never know, but IMO….dry weather would have seen the Tigers lose both those games.

My predictions for the 2021 AFL season

Josh…gonna miss your articles. Always good insight and I love your passion about your Roos.
Ill put it out there…im a Bombers man and I am mostly happy with the draft. Maybe 1 too many talls but I understand why. It sets us up for the next decade and next year they can go all mids.
I do think however that both the Pies and Swans have to be the winners. Both clubs got everything they wanted. They got their picks and NGAs.(Sorry Thomas…Suns only ok). Along with the Bombers these 3 teams would be walking away thinking lifes looking ok in the footy world in the next few years.

2020 AFL draft: Club-by-club review, my take on every team

Im inclined to agree. They are a very good team and had Richmond in the prelim. Rained saved the tigers in that game and the GF

Trade and draft review: Power recharge

Yeah…..nah. Sorry there’s some terrible predictions here. Theres no way the Kangaroos and Hawks finish higher than the Bombers and Swans. Ross are the worst team in it and the Hawks are worse than 2020 and lost their best player for the year. Swans will be about the same while the Bombers only really lost 1 player but brought others in, including some future young guns.
And the Cats win it for mine. If it didn’t rain last year the Tigers wouldn’t have beaten Port or Geelong. In fact they struggled mostly against the Saints who had half their team out. Port v Cats could be the GF with the Cats winning it.

My predictions for the 2021 AFL season

Couldn’t agree more. Im not a Cats supporter but its clear they’re up there with the best. West Coast yes, but Geelong could have/should have beaten them a few weeks ago and that was in Perth!
And last year…despite what people say, they were the best team by a mile and if either Hawkins or Duncan were playing that preliminary they would have beaten Richmond by 8 goals.
Cats supporters get set for a fun ride. Only the Eagles can beat you.

It’s time Geelong were treated like real contenders in 2020

How you feeling big four??

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions: Round 3

By the way im a Bombers member so didn’t care either way. I just like games to be fair

My four takeaways from Round 2

Agreed! Well said

Essendon need to play Darcy Parish in the midfield

Exactly. And he was about a metre behind the line when he touched it so therefore not a mark

My four takeaways from Round 2

That was NOT a mark. His Collingwood opponent was even across the line he was so far back. Terrible decision and clear as crystal it was well over the line

My four takeaways from Round 2

Higgins was definitely NOT a mark. His Collingwood opponent was even across the line he was so far back. Cost the magpies the match.
Ps…im a bombers member so I didnt really care who won but I try to be objective

Six talking points from Round 2

AD i have to agree with the others. Youve lost it. What in the world could possibly make you think the Swsns are at 5 after just losing to the Bombers in Sydney? And…they’ve only beaten wooden spooners Adelaide? Swans are bottom 6 team. You think they were more impressive than Geelong? And Essesndon who best them? And better than Richmond who played s premiership contender?
Something very very wrong there.

AFL Power Rankings 2020: Round 2

Staggered Merritt and Shiel aren’t in there. Both guns. And if Buddy get a in there it’s only based on potential since he rarely plays and on that criteria Daniher would have to be there too then. As would Josh Kennedy WC.
Robbie Gray is a gun too. Should be higher and the Crouch brothers? Matt’s been awesome for years, Brad had his best season and was one the best mids in the game. How can they not be top 50?
But…as always it’s all a matter of opinion and that’s why we read and comment.

The Roar’s AFL top 50 wrap: The full list, who voted for who, team of the top 50, plus best clubs

Although I don’t think Collingwood Are the best team in it,I think they clearly have the wood over the tigers. Even in 2017 and 2018 anytime they lost to the tigers it was only a last quarter fade out and they always had about 10 starting players out. I’m happy to out it out there that if Collingwood plays Richmond in finals, the pies win every time. If I was the tigers, that’s the team I wouldn’t want to play in finals

AFL preview series: Richmond Tigers vs Collingwood Magpies

Marnie I preferred the old format. I remember some HUGE preseason finals. The Bombers played Tigers at Waverley park one year. 75000 watched the final. The Blues were involved in big finals too. People say it didn’t mean much but…if you look through the history of grand finalists and winners in preseason…..very often they were the top teams of the regular season too. There are of course exceptions (here’s looking at you Carlton 2005).

Marsh Community Series: rate it or hate it?

If you move the Hawks down about 7 spots (take this to the bank…bottom 6 without a doubt) and the Roos down a few, Geelong will be top 4 and Melbourne, Essendon and Port will all be much higher up….then your ladder could be about right Cam.

AFL preview series: Richmond Tigers vs Collingwood Magpies

Couldn’t disagree more Jay. Dustin Martin is way too overrated. Everyone needs to watch his games more closely. The amount of cheap goals he gets sitting in a goal square unattended, the limited possessions he gets per game he is nowhere near the stratosphere of Dangerfield and Fyfe. They influence and turn games literally by themselves. Dangerfield 1, Fyfe 2 and then daylight. The Bont influences games far more than Martin ever does. As soon as he goes into the centre, he gets the ball every time and the game changes and the same applies to Cripps, he just doesn’t have enough good players around him yet but he does far more work and carries everyone on his shoulders. A ton more than Martin ever has.

The Roar's AFL top 50 players: 10-1

About right I think. Demons will play finals. Fit and ready this year. Carlton is the one i’m waiting for. Is it this year or next? I think it could have been this year but injuries to Curnow and McKay makes it too hard. Next year watch out Blues!
Freo, Swans and Hawks have years of pain ahead.

Which team will make the leap in 2020?
