It should be an NRL September to remember... But why does it all seem so familiar?
Ah, September. The sun is shining and blossoms are blooming as we emerge blinking into the spring sunshine from our (thankfully) brief winter hibernation.…

Anzac Day is sacred, making money out of it is not.
The NRL is “getting tough” on head knocks and concussions by ensuring the victims of high tackles and illegal play are taken out of the game.

I suspect this suggestion will raise a lot of hackles and we’ll see a lot of “if they weren’t born here and don’t pick Australia, they shouldn’t be playing Origin” type comments
I’ve fully supported the tier 2 / Origin eligibility laws. I think they’ve improved Origin and massively strengthened international footy. It hasn’t sacrificed eligibility laws. Pacific heritage players still need to meet EXACTLY the same eligibility laws as their colleagues to be picked for Origin
I was born and raised in NSW and Australia. My dad is English and my mum Canadian. I would have been epically proud to represent any of the four, so I completely get the idea that you can be multiple combinations of nationality… and do it with pride
The idea of “I’m 100% this nationality and nothing else” is what the old school eligibility laws were based on, but doesn’t really fit with modern society any more
I’m pretty open to the idea, but there’s still a few things I need to work though before I’m completely comfortable with Poms and Kiwis playing Origin
If Kiwis and Poms are allowed to play, Origin might be about to stumble into eligibility rules that work
They definitely weren’t arguing a point you made, but were kind enough to kinda prove your point for you… 😂 😂
'Embarrassing post': Tigers star in strife over social media comment on LGBTQ+ inclusion
So if Teddy has a flat season or two at the very end of his career it affects his legacy? I’m not so sure…
I think we all get a bit dramatic at times. If someone isn’t the best ever they must be the worst
It doesn’t take away his 2019 which is in the top 5 or so best individual seasons I’ve seen. Doesn’t take away his Dally M or his 220 games or 120 tries. His two premierships. Origin and test wins. His World Cup win as skipper
2023 wasn’t a great season, but he was red hot in the last two months or so. Even an absolutely dud 2024 shouldn’t ruin his legacy…
Pressure Points: Why 2024 might be the most crucial year of James Tedesco's career
How has he lost the right to voice an opinion?
'Embarrassing post': Tigers star in strife over social media comment on LGBTQ+ inclusion
Yeah, I’ve jagged a couple now
You’re spot on with the tips to get better scores
Sometimes you hurt your brain trying to recall obscure players helps. Sometimes it pops in seemingly from nowhere
Thanks, NRL Grid: you’ve made me realise how little I know about rugby league
My first unicorn. Grand final winner x played for the Cowboys = Ben Harris !

First read through of this article, I got as far as the link and now I’m hooked

Ciraldo has a five year contract, nothing to worry about… 😂 😂
Pressure Points: Gus is the centre of attention at the Dogs - and he'll be the fall guy if they fail in 2024
They’re still streets ahead of the Dogs middle
.
Knights have two recent Origin props and a current kiwi
.’
All the Sharks boys would be a walk up start for the Dogs and improve the Dogs pack…
.
I guess it’s not impossible, but I’d need to see a far better game plan than anything I’ve seen from the dogs in eight years to convince me they can achieve anything with such a lightweight middle
Pressure Points: Gus is the centre of attention at the Dogs - and he'll be the fall guy if they fail in 2024
Perfect summary
He annoys the hell out of me in commentary but you can’t knock his results
I’m sure someone will say “yeah, well what about the five year plan”
Ok it took eight (or whatever) not five, but what he said would happen at Penrith is exactly what’s happened
The Bloke in a Bar interview was some of the best footy content I’ve ever heard…
Pressure Points: Gus is the centre of attention at the Dogs - and he'll be the fall guy if they fail in 2024
That’s just not true. They will have to pay RFM or arrange a settlement if he doesn’t land a contract elsewhere
As for ‘how do they have the money?’ Put the Bulldogs roster up against the Panthers roster man for man and tell me who has the greater player spend
Pressure Points: Gus is the centre of attention at the Dogs - and he'll be the fall guy if they fail in 2024
IF they land AFB it won’t be until 2025
The lack of big middles is a massive concern for 24. I like the rest of the team but if Knight and King are out starting props we’ll struggle
Both decent enough players but just not big enough to own the middle
Pressure Points: Gus is the centre of attention at the Dogs - and he'll be the fall guy if they fail in 2024
Good call. That’s my concern with this lot. Guys like Hutchinson, Mann, Salmon, etc look good when they’re slotting into gun sides but how effective are any of them when they’re the main man?
.
I had a very brief chat with Gus at Canterbury races last Friday night…

Sometimes it’s worth having a go than offering nothing so you can never be wrong…
Madge is an outstanding choice for the Blues – but only if he embraces the difference of rep footy
Go Fish !!!
History in the making as props dominate the Golden Boot shortlist - with Fish the clear favourite
Great comment Ben
I reckon this gets shown every time a new player is picked for Origin
NSW have a “he’s too small, he’s not tough enough, won’t handle it” exclusion policy. Queensland just picks the next man up
When a new player is picked for NSW a host of current and former greats come out with “he’s tough as, he’s built for Origin, got a huge motor”. Queenslanders just say “he’ll do his job”
On field this year NSW got caught up in the fervour of trying to prove how tough they were and how dominant they could be and tactics went out the window
Queensland had strategy and shape every time they attacked and won the first two games with far fewer opportunities
Every year NSW talk about how they’ll get the job done. Queensland just get it done
NSW needs to forget trying to be a knock off Queensland. We’ll never out-Queensland Queensland. We need to find our own identity and culture
Madge is an outstanding choice for the Blues – but only if he embraces the difference of rep footy
Nice read Tony
Manly were a great choice. Because of their sustained success they have four very distinct eras to choose from
Great lineup and hard to argue too many. Snoz O’Connor always gets ripped off and moved to the wing despite being one of the all time great centres ????
Great choice with Kevin Ward. There was a fair bit of mystique around his performance. He’d been back in England and only come back shortly before the game from memory. It was also a 30+ degree day and everyone thought the big man would melt…
Eight-time premiers: Who makes Manly’s greatest-ever team of grand-final winners?
Why is it a conflict for Origin coach Maguire to coach the kiwis but not for club coach Bennett?
There’s far more overlap between the club and international calendars than origin and international. Bennett’s club commitments would be far more intrusive to him coaching NZ than Maguire’s Origin commitments
I get the Maguire situation wouldn’t be ideal, but his results have been brilliant and I think NZ might have been better served looking for ways to make the situation work than pulling the plug immediately
I’ve read the ‘Victor Radley’ example before. Regardless of who is coaching where, I would hope young players have better advisors on their playing future than rep coaches who have their own vested interest regardless of where else they’re coaching and may not be in the job in six months time anyway…
Kiwis were right to punt Maguire over Blues conflict of interest - now it’s time to ring Uncle Wayne
Is there a conflict? He’s coaching a NSW side to try and beat Queensland not NZ and coaching a NZ side to play Australia not NSW. The respective seasons are 4-5 months apart
It sounds like NZ has put the kibosh on the arrangement which is interesting because I’d think they’d have the most to gain from the additional intel he’d pick up coaching the blues against the maroons
We’ve had club coaches coach against their own club players in Origin before and it hasn’t been a problem
'Ultimate professional': Maguire quits Kiwis, leaving way clear for Origin job
The international and origin seasons don’t run concurrently and neither is a 52 week a year role
His results this year with NZ have been brilliant. Surprised they weren’t more accommodating
'Ultimate professional': Maguire quits Kiwis, leaving way clear for Origin job
I’m ready to call Cleary over Alexander as the Panthers’ best
Cleary has three premierships to one.
He’s already won more semi final games than Alexander played in. He’s won more Origins than Alexander played
He’s got two Churchills. Two Dally M halfback awards (Brandy got three over his entire career)
Brandy has a Dally M, Cleary has a RLPA gong.
Alexander was a very, very good halfback. Cleary’s already elite and he’s it even halfway through his career. I understand the reluctance to call it for Cleary given it’s early days, but if Cleary retired tomorrow, I have no doubt we’d be saying Cleary had a better career
Who is the greatest Penrith Panther of all time?
It’s happened a lot for NSW, and now maybe for Australia…
Jake Trbojevic doesn’t blow anyone’s hair back when he plays… but you sure as sheet miss him when he’s not there
Munster got off the sauce when he had his ‘bag of powder’ drama and 2022 was arguably his best season. This year he got back on it. Not saying it’s the difference but he should think about it
I think Teddy’s time is limited, but think he did more to get Australia back in the game than Walsh might have done in the same circumstances. Walsh is the future though
There were queries about Australia only picking one edge forward before the tournament started. Came home to roost by the final
Meninga spoke a lot about specialists but proceeded to pick a lot of players, if not out of position, at least not in their prime position… of the team in the final the 2,3,5,9,12 were playing out of their regular NRL position
'Wake-up call': Is it time for a complete Kangaroos team overhaul after New Zealand 'capitulation'?
Don’t stress mate… it was never too likely… 😂
If Kiwis and Poms are allowed to play, Origin might be about to stumble into eligibility rules that work
