It should be an NRL September to remember... But why does it all seem so familiar?

The NRL is “getting tough” on head knocks and concussions by ensuring the victims of high tackles and illegal play are taken out of the game.

“Have you ever played the game?”
Yes
“Well you’ve never played first grade” 😂 😂 😂
Neither have you so you can’t write of other peoples opinions with “you’ve never played first grade”
Game’s gone soft, huh? League's tough enough without dangerous incidents getting feather touch from judiciary
That’s the problem “wrap up the ball” has become all pervasive. It’s not a traditional tackling technique, it’s leading to these head clashes and it can be taken out of the game
First grade players may be told to defend Iike that. No one is taught to tackle like that
Game’s gone soft, huh? League's tough enough without dangerous incidents getting feather touch from judiciary

Game’s gone soft, huh? League's tough enough without dangerous incidents getting feather touch from judiciary
Players have always been sent off or suspended for accidents. Careless and reckless are written into the charges and the rules
Otherwise you’re saying every act of foul play in the history of the game has been deliberate which as we both know is complete BS
Game’s gone soft, huh? League's tough enough without dangerous incidents getting feather touch from judiciary
Reckless and careless are both accidental by definition…
Game’s gone soft, huh? League's tough enough without dangerous incidents getting feather touch from judiciary
Why do you keep insisting dangerous / foul play HAS to be deliberate?
Remember the old coat hanger style tackles in the 80s? An attacker would step, the defender would throw his arm out and take the attacker high
Completely accidental, often resulted in a send off and / or a suspension
Most foul play is accidental. Few players go out to deliberately injure an opponent. That’s why charges include careless and reckless
Were you ever coached to tackle like May did when you played? Charging in upright and jumping into contact. I never was and it hasn’t been a thing until recently
Same old name calling from you though. People who don’t want to see players get knocked out cold and and their faces smashed in by unnecessary – and by definition – reckless tackles are “pearl clutchers”
Then it’s “faux outrage”. I’m not remotely outraged and nothing about it is faux. Just baseless, BS name calling
While we’re at it, it’s a bit of a dog act to call me out in a comment when you’re not replying to me…
Game’s gone soft, huh? League's tough enough without dangerous incidents getting feather touch from judiciary
As I said, it doesn’t happen anywhere else in life. Why footy?
You run a red light and get caught, you get a fine and lose points. Run a red light and cause an accident. Bigger fine, more points. Run a red light and kill someone you’re going away for a loooong time big boy
All exactly the same action. All exactly the same intent. But severity of the punishment varies based on the severity of the outcome and all incfluenced by the actions of the victim…
NRL can reduce concussion headache by expanding the number of interchange players - with a retro twist
Unless I’m missing the sarcasm… ????
Why desperate Rabbitohs need to adopt NRL's version of Bazball - it's a guaranteed win-win situation
Haha… I don’t really give a stuff about left and right, but gee the people getting worked up in this articles comments don’t sound like left wingers to me…
Why desperate Rabbitohs need to adopt NRL's version of Bazball - it's a guaranteed win-win situation
No one would be happier than me if we could just continue as things have always been concussion and CTE wasn’t a thing, but it’s not the reality
I think tackles like May’s need to be classed as reckless. If nothing goes wrong, it’s play on. But if there’s head contact like what we saw then there’s a penalty for the recklessness of the tackle
It’s a long time since I played but I was never taught to tackle like that and haven’t seen them until recently. Having the target zone above the ball is a relatively new idea as well. These things can be coached out of the game. It won’t drastically change the game of defensive styles change
If May had bent his back and made a “proper” tackle he would have absolutely folded Walsh. It doesn’t drastically change the game…
I know a lot of people are chicken little-ing about the prospect of a class action against the NRL by former players, but it will be stuff like not making this sort of tackle illegal that will bring us undone
For a long time NFL players using their heads in tackles was “just part of the game” but they recognised how dangerous it was and made it illegal. It hasn’t drastically changed the game. It can be done
Game’s gone soft, huh? League's tough enough without dangerous incidents getting feather touch from judiciary
Of course the seriousness of the injury plays a part in the punishment. It does in every other face of life, why not footy?
NRL can reduce concussion headache by expanding the number of interchange players - with a retro twist
I agree with this, but maybe some of 18-21 back up from the NSW Cup side. Might be problematic if say Sailor plays 80 minutes and then Walsh gets ko’d three minutes in…
NRL can reduce concussion headache by expanding the number of interchange players - with a retro twist
Yeah, agreed. It’s relatively easy to treat all the symptoms of concussions and HIA s – like interchanges, but if you don’t address the root causes, it’s all just band aids
NRL can reduce concussion headache by expanding the number of interchange players - with a retro twist
“expand the game-day squad to 21 while still capping the number of interchanges at eight”
That suggestion is literally in the article I’m commenting on, with no qualifier
Then this later which is in line with what I was suggesting:
“Another option could be to keep the four-player interchange as is but allow teams to have multiple reserves on the bench who can only come on when one of the top 17 is injured by foul play or has to go off for a concussion check.”

What’s the over/under for number of games before Sivo is next charged?
I reckon about 5.5

'It reminds us of how helpless we are': Life as an NRL player during Ramadan - with a little help from Hazem
I couldn’t be happier than to see Teddy return to his best. He had a few off gave and the most minor of form blips last year – for the first time in a long and successful career – and lots of people were rooting him off
Absolutely undeserved
SuperCoach has been absolute carnage this year with injuries aplenty and guns not firing
I’ve rolled the dice on bringing Dom Young in this week. Last week was scary good and I think (hope) he’ll get better. Still very new combos…
How Dom Young and Justin Holbrook have turned the Roosters inside out - and helped Tedesco get back to his best
Agreed about Papenhuyzen. I tried to ignore it, but that gives me Edgars as well
Paps injury was caused by a team mate landing on his leg. It was a freak accident and had nothing to do with a little bloke defending in the middle
NRL can reduce concussion headache by expanding the number of interchange players - with a retro twist
I like that idea, but maybe when you lose a player you can bring one of your 18-21 players into the bench
So for the Broncos, Walsh goes off. The Broncos bring no.21 Sailor into their 17. Cobbo starts at centre, Piakura stays at back row
Provides injury cover and I like that better than 21 players rotating on and off the field
The drawback is 18-21 may not get a lot of footy over a period of time…

I’ve got Strange, Savage and Smithies from the Raiders
I was going to get Hosking in last week, but Whitehead coming in and Hosking on the bench scared me off..
Round 4 Team Lists Late Mail: Newcastle lose star to 'medical condition', Manly shuffle pack
No one’s picking this incident because it suits us, it’s because it’s current…
Your arguments are getting flimsier…
Game’s gone soft, huh? League's tough enough without dangerous incidents getting feather touch from judiciary
That’s not true
Finucane got suspended a couple of years ago for a similar reckless hit on Crichton where the contact was head to head
I bet your stance wasn’t “it’s just an accident” then
Forceful contact to the head is against the rules…
Game’s gone soft, huh? League's tough enough without dangerous incidents getting feather touch from judiciary
The kickers is a great example. The NRL got that out of the game by cracking down on late hits, tackling in the air and taking the legs out
Coaches and players realised they’d be giving away penalties and be missing players and adapted
Now kickers are so safe they’ve been able to get rid of blockers and we have great contests between kickers and kick pressure…
Game’s gone soft, huh? League's tough enough without dangerous incidents getting feather touch from judiciary
All of us apparently 😂
Round 4 Team Lists Late Mail: Newcastle lose star to 'medical condition', Manly shuffle pack
Yeah, and it wasn’t against the rules. Injuries caused were “accidental” but terrible and they changed the rules to get it out of the game
The May / Walsh incident doesn’t happen 50 times a game. Why would it be reportable and newsworthy if it happened all the time
