“the AFL needs to put its resources into addressing that, or move teams out of Melbourne to places like Tasmania and Darwin.” That is a more sensible idea, however the only drawback is the populations there. Football is a religion in both places and I would love to see it happen though.

Barrett’s Showdown comments are an indictment on the AFL media

I had a chuckle at Barret being a “reputable journalist”. Never has been.
The Yanks playing in London is like Port playing in China, not two SA teams playing in Vic.
He was obviously looking for a bite and (to quote BT), WOWEE, did he get one.
Lighten up and have a laugh, Peeps, its more fun.

Barrett’s Showdown comments are an indictment on the AFL media

Summed it up perfectly, Baz. I like roaming BT, it is cringe-worthy occasionally but usually entertaining. I can’t stand the Fox commentators, they are all up themselves.
I like Richo, Lingy and Bartel, they give some good insights into the game. I liked Tom Harley during his brief stint in the media as well.

Time to let the old ways die

Yeah, he is gone for sure then.

Huge AFL loss renews pressure on Bolton

No, they won’t.

Huge AFL loss renews pressure on Bolton

Sacked one year into a rebuild, you need a reality check.

Brendon Bolton, it's time to pack your bags

I certainly hope you are right Doc, I am going to the Blues / Port game and it will be the only game I can get to this year so an upset wold be magic. I agree with your tips too but not sure on the Freo 10 goals.

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions: Round 2

I am hoping the Crows take a massive slide (unlikely) but the Blues now have to climb as well.

Carlton 2019 season preview: Best 22 and predicted finish

I would say 8 wins should be the pass mark after the last three years, they should be aiming for 12 wins. Anything less than 8 would be a fail in my opinion. They need to prove themselves now and start climbing the ladder, 5 wins won’t get them off the bottom and they would be going backwards.

Carlton 2019 season preview: Best 22 and predicted finish

I am lead to believe that Barlow has a clause that allows him to take up an offer from an AFL club, should one be offered. The fat lady hasn’t sung yet.

The Roar's 2018 AFL trade period report card - every club graded, as voted by you

IMHO, I think we did ok, Macca. If we look at the two mature age players as freebies (and discount them as we never had them to start with), we have effectively picked up Fasolo, McGovern, Newman and Setterfield for three second round picks and a shuffle of later picks. Considering the upside of McGovern and Setterfield, we picked them all up for unders in my opinion.
If we have a good run with injuries, we will climb fairly rapidly now the kids have games in them and should be hitting their stride in 2019.

I would like to see him get to the 400 club but that would be near on impossible.
One of those players that will be remembered for a long time to come.

An ode to Kade: One of the most loyal players in AFL history

Happy for Bucks to hang in there. He is doing a great job, sign him up for 5 more years. It gives the Blues someone to win against.

Nathan Buckley’s black and white fallacy

Pickett is the intriguing one, he shows glimpses and if he can go to that level, he will be a star. I hope he does.

Players to watch in the JLT Community Series: Adelaide - Fremantle

From what I can gather, the Pies are looking at Fogarty so it may happen yet.

A club-by-club guide to the 2017 AFL draft

“I do enjoy how up and about blues fans get after a rare victory though, and how they actually beg me for my appraisal and approval of the performance, very flattering indeed.”

More comedy gold, Mattyb. Keep up the good work and stay original, it never gets stale.
Everyone is “up and about” after their team wins, regardless of who the team is.
You are the guru on all things Carlton, that is why we beg and grovel for your approval.

Seriously though, I would be interested in seeing the answers to Macca’s questions.

A club-by-club guide to the 2017 AFL draft

It really has me baffled why they wouldn’t play those extra 10 games on free to air television. Channel 10 should be looking to pick that up and try to take the rights from channel 7 (who are total rubbish in SA, particularly when Abernathy and Jarman are the commentators). That equates to around 5 million viewers. Surely that kind of exposure will have a high return on investment?
If a team that has been struggling starts to do well and looks to make the eight easily, the fans will watch those games and are more likely to buy memberships and merchandise. If it is not accessible by fans they are not going to bother – therefore lost opportunity.
I think Gil and his team have been really good for the game but they failed big time on this one.

24 insights into the 2017 AFL fixture

Fair Call. I like to watch a game that is close, regardless of who is playing. Blow out games don’t interest me when you have a 99% chance of losing by 8 goals +.

AFL fixture: The round to miss in 2017

I agree Cat, two more drafts yet, lets see who changes colours in the Free Agency period.
I have already made a prediction but will change it once teams have been finalised and reassessed.

24 insights into the 2017 AFL fixture

I look forward to your article on the Draft, Ryan. I am one of those ravenous dogs and find a drip feed is better than no feed.
It certainly was a memorable season and a turning point for the AFL on so many fronts.
Your reference to the white elephant could also come under novelty game and the reason they want the Gold Coast to play is they want a team that Port has a chance of beating after talking them up in China. Most other bottom teams look to rise so it might have been a simple choice.

24 insights into the 2017 AFL fixture

The Dogs played with a tenacity similar to what got Hawthorn to their 3 grand finals. They play good, fierce, four-quarter team footy and that is what wins games. I think they now have a taste and want more, I hope they don’t lose that intensity.
They are definitely predictable in that they will come out and play to win for keeps.

2017 AFL ladder predictions

The Blues were struggling for the last three weeks, that was evident. They will have a fully fit team back on the park and hopefully their endurance will be better with more experience in the younger players. They did have a lot of players with very little experience out there but that is improving as well. Everritt gone is a big plus, he was an average player and will be replaced by someone better. Murphy was a big out and will be back firing. Players like Charlie Curnow and Cieran Byrne will add to our depth as well.
Our defence and midfield have improved and if the younger players can get through without injury, the forward line will be better as well.
I can’t see them going backwards with the the people that are in place, looking at the whole club. They won’t climb a great deal higher – 2 spots at the absolute most but they definitely won’t slide back 2 spots either.
You are right about one thing – people having hysterical and delusional views.

2017 AFL ladder predictions

My money would be on the Suns, Paul. I think Eade is another Malthouse but I could be proven wrong. Abblett wanting out is a sure sign that all is not right on the Gold Coast.

2017 AFL ladder predictions

“Clear tip”? That is saying you think they are far worse than any other team in the competition and you are being impartial.
The Blues have lost 28 players in 2 years and are bringing in players that will contribute to the success of the team. They will improve this year and end up around 1 or 2 spots higher at least.

2017 AFL ladder predictions

Round 7 has the Blues and Pies, traditional rivals for over a century.
Good, bad or otherwise, this is a game to watch for fans of both teams.

I think Brisbane will be a lot more competitive in 2017 and will be one to watch out for. They are where the Blues were at 12 months ago and there is now light at the end of the tunnel for them.

As for the Bye rounds, have one around mid July. The clubs can rest players and staff through the season much like rotating RDO’s. It kills my tips and I am bad enough as it is, I cal them the kiss of death rather than a tip.
