I’m liking the Panthers especially if Moylan plays – would be great to see Benji return and come up against “Baby Benji”
Agony then ecstasy as Panthers conjure comeback victory
Personally I thought Reagan Campbell-Gillard was outstanding and would have got my man of the match (first error of the game aside). Played nearly 60 mins in Merrin’s absence made over 170m and showed plenty of aggression in defence.
Highlights: Martin fires Panthers to win on debut
Quite simply the aim of the salary cap to produce a level playing field fails while TPAs exist.
Either do one of two things – scrap the cap or make TPAs more transparent and allow clubs who don’t have the corporate advantages to at least compete on an adjusted salary cap scale so that those clubs can come up and match the spend of those heavily topped up TPA clubs.
NRL to review third-party deals
Mismanagement of the cap and in particular use of TPA’s aside are we really happy that the salary cap + TPAs provides that level playing field we are all led to believe exists?
I know I’m not happy that in effect there are clubs out there who don’t have the TPA advantages then others do therefore have to use their salary cap to have any hope of competing for players that can sign with other clubs that don’t have to use their cap all because they have greater access to the business end of town.
Surely we have to get to a stage where clubs become fiscally responsible for the cost of maintaining their playing roster instead of being governed under the illusion that is the current system?
Salary cap accusations just the latest management dramas at Eels
I have to agree – had Penrith elected to continue attacking the line and come up with 4 or 6 points I firmly think that would have sunk the Bulldogs given the way they were playing up until that point. But they didn’t, the Bulldogs got a sniff and the rest is history.
Moses miracle snatches win from Panthers
Funny haha – put it this way they never trailed at any point until those last 20 or so seconds
Moses miracle snatches win from Panthers
I’m not sure the Bulldogs were that confident of coming back as early as the 30 min mark – I sense they thought they were in the game when Penrith elected to bizarrely go for the two to go out from an eight to ten point lead when attacking the line repeatedly early in the second half.
Moses miracle snatches win from Panthers
I thought Soward played reasonably well – I think we’ll see Wallace or Taylor revert to hooker next week
Raiders vs Panthers preview: Injury-hit Panthers set to prevail
Big difference between PG structures a deal at Penrith & how previous management structured a deal at Penrith – no doubt this deal won’t all be on the cap unlike some of the players he had to offload who were all on the cap with no 3rd party deal utilisation
Which Dragons will follow Merrin out the door?
Salary cap concessions??? I bet a few other clubs who have managed to look after themselves far more astutely off the field such as the Canberra Raiders would love a piece of that to help them attract players.
As for looking after the GC, other regional teams that have come into the NRL one way or another have managed by enlarge to maintain off-field financial stability over the past 20 years (excluding that Super League era). Tbh I would much prefer to see a second Brisbane team that takes a few games to the GC every year at this point in time.
The NRL Gold Coast bailout: It's about bloody time
I love what Jamie Soward did for Penrith but to suggest he single handedly dragged them in the 2004 prelim finals is a bit of an insult to the Dally M Hooker of the Year & also Matt Moylan one of the brightest of FB prospects coming thru the NRL ranks at present.
I do look forward to watching with interest how Eto Nabuli goes at the Dragons & whether he can get a shot at the NRL having had the pleasure of watching all but two of his NSW Cup games for Penrith live.
What becomes of the Dragon hearted
Cronulla making the eight? They are one of two teams who could push out a 2014 finalist but for mine couple of things:
1) The halves – Robson solid perofrmer combining with Barba who to be fair is largely untested at the NRL level. Nu Brown out for the season & lets be honest Kyle Stanley wasnt exactly setting the world on fire in not being able to force his way into an underperforming Dragons outfit so I have little confidence in the hlaves
2) The forward pack – yes its a good pack but so many of them well into their 30’s – Gallen Ennis Lewis Tupou Heighington – they’ve struggled to keep their best forwards on the field for the majority of the season for sometime now.
3) Depth – The Sharks have improved depth in the outside backs & do have some quality young talent coming through but they dont have the forwards depth at their disposal they had say 2 years back. Another injury run like last year & the Sharks unlike sides like Penirth whose depth was good enough to still secure a top 4 side, simply don’t have the depth to cope.
Overall with an ageing roster, questions in the halves & lack of depth its a NO from me at this stage
Will the Sharks make the finals in 2015?
Maybe ASADA arent so bad clairyovants after all….
Titans stand down Falloon and Dowling over drug charges
Arent the Titans lucky Srama back flipped from the Roosters & they were able to snare Moseley from Penrith? Otherwise could have been down two hookers with Carter’s sacking & now this latest drama.
Titans stand down Falloon and Dowling over drug charges
I think when the Dragons are quoted as saying its our best ever offer for a forward that has been knocked back I doubt that comes from the player manager
Merrin to definitely quit Dragons: report
I reckon they might not wait that long but lets get #3 1st
NRL season preview: Penrith Panthers
More serious note switch Canterbury into the top 4, Souths with their questionable depth at 5 & Brisbane & 6 we are close. Cant commit to an untried Barba at 6 for the Sharks for mine hence its between Melbourne & New Zealand for that last spot for mine.
Who will make the eight in 2015 NRL?
I’m comfortable with where the Panthers a re placed coming into the season es it might be a sluggish start but provided we get thru origin around 9 & 7 W/L confident we can make the eight from there with the run home
Only one of Manly, Storm, Penrith and Brisbane will make the finals
I bet most teams wouldnt mind the likes of DWZ at FB if Moylan touch wood goes down & either Peachey or a Cartwright to fill in the halves if Soward touch wood went down
Only one of Manly, Storm, Penrith and Brisbane will make the finals
Well there was a prediction…..this article has gone pear shaped with the latest events of the past 24 hours #NRLInCrisis
NRL in crisis? What crisis?
Wow leaving out an international in Lewis Brown & still only tipped to finish 7th – can see them starting inconsistently but if they get to end of Origin (R18) & be at least 9 & 7 they will make the top 4
Panthers no longer NRL's surprise packets
1991 – Premiers
2003 – Premiers
2015 – ?????
Once again its the year of the goat/sheep
NRL season preview: Penrith Panthers
The Roosters as last year’s minor premiers & defending premiers from 2013 must have been an average team then. Other notable wins post orgin included Brisbane, Bulldogs, Cowboys & Warriors all average teams
NRL season preview: Penrith Panthers
Tim love your work BUT the 2003 premiers, Penrith I’m pretty sure in your column should say lost three not won three.
Roosters, Warriors and Knights need to win this weekend, or give 2016 away
