Darren Coleman’s acceptance of the poisoned chalice which is the NSW Waratahs has been met with resounding applause and fanfare. He is seen by…
Jumping on board the Waratahs' bandwagon in 2015 turned out to be both a blessing and a curse. It gave me the taste of…
The Queensland Reds beat the NSW Waratahs for the first time in 11 matches on Friday night, winning 32-26. As a Waratahs fan, I’m…
Peter, I think it’s relatively poor form to insult the intelligence of a player like that. Hooper is no dummy (though TBF we can question some on-field decisions as captain), just listen to him in any off-field interview and his intelligence and capacity is obvious enough.
Can Michael Hooper stay ahead of the pack in the race to 2023?
Thanks Nick! I must say I’m a big fan of his new haircut, adds a certain ruggedness to his appearance, Elsom-esque.
My big concern with your argument here is that the quality of the teams doesn’t override the financial realities. The money is simply too good OS. BPA signing for Marseille is worrying. 25yo starting Wallaby with no real competition at the Reds.
What do we do here? Encourage private investment into the game? Reduce our footprint of clubs to minimise expenditure and increase salaries, despite the HUGE PR disaster this would be?
I’ve never been convinced by Ben Darwin’s argument of reducing the Aus teams down to three. Sure, the stats may back him up, but he never speaks to ‘how’ it would happen.
Can Super Rugby AU bring the wild geese home?
Thanks for including us (Pick and Drive) on this list!
Honestly, Mitch and I started the pod because we found that there weren’t enough quality, weekly, Aussie rugby podcasts at the start of the season. We’ll be revamping things in 2021 so keep an ear out 🙂
GAGR were far too irregular (though fantastic), the Rugby Report Card (affiliated with GAGR) swear every second word and I’m not keen on my 5yo listening to that, and I found the Fox Rugby podcast far too ‘matey’.
Sad that GAGR and The Aussie Rugby show have now finished up. I’d also recommend you check our Rugby Fixation, Mitch Evans and his brother have some good insights and love their stats!
What are the best rugby podcasts?
Great, glad I’m not crazy or ignorant!
It seems to be one of those things that is often let go by refs, though it’s not too common so isn’t a major issue.
How the All Blacks found their wings in Newcastle
Thanks for this Nic, it was plain to see the extra width they were playing with this weekend. Adding to that was the ease at which they controlled the territory, far too many unforced Argentinian errors never allowed them to get into the game.
One point about Richie’s chase in your second to last clip, isn’t his pull on Cordero once he’s been taken to ground illegal? The tackler has to release, surely he can’t keep pulling once he’s on the ground.
How the All Blacks found their wings in Newcastle
Jez, have you seen any announcement about who has been released? There are a few players that seem to be out and about, but I can’t find a definitive list anywhere.
James O'Connor injury forces major Wallabies shake-up in team for Bledisloe 3
Alright knowledgeable Roar team. By what process are new teams admitted to the Six Nations? Does each existing member nation have the power of veto for a new entry? I can’t find any info on the Six Nations website, and am not too sure where to look.
I’m guessing here, but if there indeed is the power of veto, surely there’s no way that Italy-Scotland-Wales (at least) will want SA to join the Six Nations.
Each of these teams would lose the vast majority of their games to the Boks, thus diluting their chances of ever winning the competition. It’s not in their best interests to allow the Boks to enter, and one thing we all know is that Northern Hemisphere self-interest reigns supreme.
If they were genuine about wanting to expand the Six Nations and develop rugby globally, it should have been Georgia who gets admitted, NOT South Africa.
Why South Africa was right to move north
Agreed Ulrich.
I think some of the reason why it’s been quite poorly received, was because he’d just missed out on the Red’s captaincy and was essentially a shoe-in for the Wallabies lock position, and an experienced or somewhat senior player in a young team. The timing made it seem like a reaction to not getting the captaincy.
That being said, I can understand the limited length of a career and his need to maximise earnings.
Why the Wallabies still need 'Three Storey Rory'
Thanks for this Nick!
Can someone remind me whether or not Coleman has recently had surgery, and how long he’s out for? I’m fairly sure I heard that, will obviously influence his availability.
Also Nick, do you think that Rodda ‘should’ be recalled? With the fairly acrimonious way that he left Australian shores, will the Wallabies selectors be concerned with the ‘look’ of recalling a player that chose his own path over the vast majority of his teammates?
Why the Wallabies still need 'Three Storey Rory'
Cheers Rhino! It’s been a good time, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this season, particularly the development that nearly every team has had.
I’ve heard/read people complain about the after-game chat. However, I don’t care if they get along after the game so long as the intensity during the match remains high, like it has.
Fox Sports is both a blessing and a curse
Agreed. A sightly tangential issue, but it’s also amazing how many of those podcasts are NOT kid friendly, with regular swearing the normal.
I’m no angel, but I’m careful what I listen to with a 5YO in the car, which really limits the options. (Part of the reason I started my own pod!!)
Fox Sports is both a blessing and a curse
Compare him to Ray Warren. Now I don’t think Rabs is as good as he was perhaps 5-10 years ago, but the passion he brings even in a run of the mill hit-up is amazing. “SMASHES INTO THE DEFENCE!”
The annoying thing is that sometimes Kearns genuinely has insightful analysis of the game. It’s just sandwiched between morose sounding statements, and complaints about the conduct of this/that/the other.
Fox Sports is both a blessing and a curse
That’s the big question isn’t it, there’s been radio silence.
In my mind that leaves two options. They didn’t get any reasonable bids, OR they’re in complex negotiations as the potential structures for 2021 start firming up.
Fox Sports is both a blessing and a curse
I’ll be honest Jez, I went along to the 2014 final not having watched more than 1-2 games in the season, a mate invited me. However, I was hooked!
I think being relatively fresh means I have fairly low expectations, and am just happy to see development/progress, the catch-phrase for the Tahs in 2020.
Fox Sports is both a blessing and a curse
I feel like that’s something up the alley of The Aussie Rugby Show, another pod I’ve just realised I missed…
Fox Sports is both a blessing and a curse
Thanks JD! We love a good chat, hopefully some of our commentary is of value!
Great to know, yet another YouTuber to follow and tell my wife “it’s for the podcast”.
Fox Sports is both a blessing and a curse
Thanks for taking a read Roar fans! One thing for discussion, are there Aussie based commentators/analysts/fans that I’ve missed?
I know the UK has people like Squidge Rugby and The Dead Ball Analayst, not sure if we have the equivalent in Aus.
Fox Sports is both a blessing and a curse
Got any figures for that? I’d have no idea where to find them.
The Wrap: Super Rugby goes up a level, as Australia and New Zealand eye each other off
Right. So Augustin Pichots run as chairman was because Australia are the darlings of world rugby?
There’s just no logic or credibility to what you’re saying.
The Wrap: Super Rugby goes up a level, as Australia and New Zealand eye each other off
I’ll bow to your understanding here Rhino. I’m fairly new (last 2-3 years) to the rugby world, so don’t have an understanding of the longer-term opinions/thoughts about SA involvement.
Since I’ve come along most of the conversations have been negative about timezone and travel difficulties, although they do acknowledge the financial benefits of partnership with SA.
The Wrap: Super Rugby goes up a level, as Australia and New Zealand eye each other off
I agree, it’s a fantastic competition. But you’ve just proven my point, that self-interest reigns supreme in international decision making.
The Wrap: Super Rugby goes up a level, as Australia and New Zealand eye each other off
Really? And Home-Nation dominance of WRU has no bearing? It’s widely agreed that a globally aligned calendar will be good for the game, yet even guarantees of preserving the integrity of the Six-Nations competition, Scotland refused for fears of relegation (as did Italy, though they aren’t a home-nation).
Get off your soapbox and recognise that England is just as guilty as Australia (and the rest) of looking out for their own interests.
The Wrap: Super Rugby goes up a level, as Australia and New Zealand eye each other off
That’s a fairly inaccurate statement…
South Africa has undeniably been looking towards Europe over the last 18 months. The switch of the Kings and Cheetahs to the Pro-14, regular rumours of SA trying to join the Six (Seven?) Nations competitions, are indicative of a desire by the SA administration to try and engage with a competition structure that better aligns with their timezones, travel schedules, and European broadcast revenue.
To solely blame AU interests is unfair and inaccurate.
The Wrap: Super Rugby goes up a level, as Australia and New Zealand eye each other off
It’s comments like this that make me despair about the state of humanity.
